Why is Fred Smerlas off WEEI?

Anyone know why Fred Smerlas has been replaced by Scott Zolak on WEEI? Apparently it's permanent, but I haven't heard why. I'll miss Fred, he always made me laugh and offered good insights on the Patriots.

I know he wasn't there today as I'm sure your aware. But listening (for a short time) I never picked up that he was gone permanetly. I would miss him too, his humor was so bad it was good. DeOsie's his good friend I think that if eei told Fred not to show up I think DeOsie wouldn't either in support.

Yeah now that you mention it I don't remember DW but I do remember the poll and Fred being way ahead.

Sounds fishy to me, lots of inuendo's(maybe it is part of the ratings game, see mikey adams)... also intimated it may be a money issue, do not like Zolak.

If it's a joke they need to make it more obvious to someone just tuning in. The announcer says, "Fred Smerlas is no longer with us" and that Zolak is his replacement going forward. At least the latter part makes sense since Zolak's Rhode Island gig folded.

My guess is they both stay on during football season. Smerlas does the Monday gig with the coach and maybe Fridays as well. Zolak does something in the middle of the week. Nothing worse than tuning in to the Big Show during football season and hearing Buckley or Mcadam wax poetic about the beauty of baseball. I love watching/talking baseball as well... during baseball season. During football season I want to hear more football analysis and would welcome Zolak as one of the cohosts.

Hey, it could be worse - Gresh is unemployed too... Lucky for us ESPN has been using him as a fill in plug in so no way he gets on WEEI...

They've been trying out Lou Merloni as well and he's been a big upgrade - even commenting on football as a life long fan who was an athlete his take is more interesting than a Buckley or Butch Sterns. Maybe they are moving away from mediots as guests and opting for guys who actually played in these leagues.

I can see a few people there making Gresh look like the piece of crap that he is.

I know last year Fred was thinking of running for office. If he does, WEEI cannot have him on or be open to equal time. Who cares if Fred was discussing Matt Cassel in a pre-season game, the law says his opponent can get 4 hours to espouse his position on, say, street repair.
