We all have different opinions on which players were the best, so I ask, how would you have done the draft?

I would've done the same trade for 10 and gone...

10. Jerod Mayo- exactly what we needed, a LB for passing downs that has the speed to stop the outside run
62. Terrance Wheatley- I like him a lot, to me he looks like a mix between Josh Wilson and Ellis Hobbs
69. Dan Connor- if he bulks up he will be a top linebacker in the league, I don't know why he dropped
78. Cliff Avril- yes, another linebacker, he has loads of potential, and can play on ST's
94. Oneil Cousins- at worst career backup, but he has the athleticism to be a left tackle
129. Orlando Scandrick- has all the physical tools, just needs to get stronger and work on his hands
197. Josh Barrett- at this point in the draft you can't ask for much more than a ridiculously good athlete, because worst come to worst he becomes a gunner

I would of pulled the fire alarm during every one of the Jet's picks so all their fans could be corraled out of the building like the rats they are. It would of spared the entire country from seeing a bunch of degenerates acting like the tools we all know they are.

I would have told the Colts that they already have a center and drafting 3 more (of the 6 total centers drafted) wasn't necessary.

Make your own joke about Peyton having his hands between the legs of as many different men as possible during training camp...

Two of those players are projected to be Gaurds by Dungy. I hate the colts, but I will never question there drafting.

I would have taken the exact players that the Colts did while the Pats were giving away picks for URFAs..

Imagine Marcus Howard (speed rusher off the edge) and Mike Hart (Faulk's replacement), you know guys that could actually make the roster.

FINALLY, thought you would never ask!! LOL
Our first day you have to give it to the FO..but I would have made more than 1 phone call --would have gotten NO and Cincy in a bidding war for Ellis. I would have heard that they offered (2) 1sts and a 2nd for the 5th pick(Dorsey) and most people valued Ellis only slightly less.....getting essentially a 4th rd pick(ya,saved $$) was a rip off. Wheatley was a slight reach, but that was ok....
Today, we had more and better picks than anyone in the league. Today was the chance to parlay this from a average draft to a GREAT one. And for at least the 3rd year in a row we mailed in the 2nd day. We reached for every pick, we traded away the best one we had(69) to SD who will be GOOD so next year our pick will be about 59....This draft is likely deeper so the player would be better this year, and a 5th rd pick who wont make the team doesnt get me warm and fuzzy.
I agree, I liked Avril over Crable. We have a Crable, his name is Woods.
I would have taken RB Charles at 69. We will need 2 RBs next year(Morris, maybe Faulk)so why not upgrade Eckel here now?Why give the pick away? We have missed winning the SB twice in the last 2 yrs by a single play...are you telling me if we didnt have this one extra guy he couldnt have made that play??
I would have taken a OL at 94.
I would stay away from every Michigan player, name the last one besides Brady that was any good at all......
I would have taken Demps in the 4th even if I had to trade up.
I would NOT give a guy like Slater a job.....he is this years Hairston. It seems like they have a binkie each yr that they want to pay just to hang around.....maybe someone should get BB a dog.

Substitute Godfrey in for Wheatley and you have my ideal draft.

The only thing I would have done differently would have been in the second round. I would have traded our 2nd +a 3rd to move up and take CB B Flowers. Wheatly has a good resumee, but I think Flowers is better.

I agree that they could've gotten more for the #7 pick. Especially knowing they had worked on this deal the night before the draft & yet that was the best they could come up with? They might as well have just let the time limit pass & save $ by taking him at #13 or so.

Wheatley at #62 I can't complain too much about, but it would've been interesting had Patrick Lee not been selected just 2 spots ahead by GB.

In the 3rd they passed on safeties DeJuan Morgan & Tom Zbokowski. And a QB in the 3rd? Until Jaws raved about him later I was pretty pissed.

Wilhite was a good value in the 4th, but again I would've prefered his teammate Lee earlier. At that point I would've liked Jack Ikegwuonu, CB Wisconsin who was taken just 2 spots later to Philly.

If that rumored trade up for Zackary Bowman had happened I would've been thrilled. Otherwise I would've addressed OL in the 5th with another Cornhukser, Carl Nicks.

Mike Hart was a steal in the 6th & he went to the Colts.

I wouldn't have traded the #69. I would have taken Hester, or even Zuttah. It really said something for Belichick to pass on the pick rather than improve at RB or OG/RT. This shows a faith in the players at those positions that many on this board do NOT have.

Crable was our man at OLB, so other OLB's really weren't being considered.

So in the end, I'm fine even with #69. I Belichick is happy with the OL, then I'm fine. Also, as he did last year, he is likely to keep the 6th WR instead of the #5 RB, so Hester wasn't needed. Slater was drafted instead to push Aiken.

Which players are you suggesting might not make the roster, and why?

Rudd is not making the roster, period, too many LBs

Whillite make make the team, but they now have 16 DBs in camp, I don't think that they are going to keep that many.

Slater could have been gotten with the 7th rd pick that they gave up to move up in the 5th round to get him. They should have taken Mike Hart, and it will come bakc to haunt us as a Colt.

The Pats entered the day with the 7th pick, and 8 picks overall, I would have traded 1 & 2 with St. Louis (maybe a 3rd next year to put it over the top) and taken Chris Long. The Pats are no longer a tema that has to find depth in the draft, they need to find "studs" that can start for them, or at least contribute. Last year they came away with none in the draft, and only have their #1 pick still on the roster, that is a putrid draft (great job on the trades for Moss, and Welker). I like Mayo, he seems like he will be a good ILB, but he could have been had at 15. We traded out of #7 and reached for Mayo and then selected a "project" back-up QB with the 3rd rounder we got. How many times are the Pats going to have a pick that high? They should have used it to get a "franchise" player, and they blew it.

No problem with trade to #10 and need says LB. Don't think other trades in day 2 made any sense. BB seems to be in love with 5-10 CBs. Hindsight is 20-20, looked at all picks and would have preferred taller CBs and another speed RB.

10 New England Patriots (From Saints) Mayo, Jerod ILB Tennessee
62 New England Patriots Thomas, Terrell CB Southern Cal (taller)
69 New England Patriots (From Oakland) Charles, Jamaal RB Texas
78 New England Patriots (From Saints) Crable, Shawn OLB Michigan
94 New England Patriots O'Connell, Kevin QB San Diego State (in BB we trust)
129 New England Patriots Ikegwuonu, Jack CB Wisconsin (taller and if healthy - a steal)
156 New England Patriots Davis, Kellen TE Michigan State (issues but a need)
197 New England Patriots Studebaker, Andy OLB Wheaton (developmental)
238 New England Patriots Bernadeau, Mackenzy OG Bentley (developmental)

Also liked some of the UDFA just signed LB Vince Redd, DT Chris Norwell, and P Mike Dragosavich

Belichick doesn't want taller CBs. I'm not sure why that isn't sinking in yet. He wants his CBs to be able to change direction and accelerate to top speed quickly. You can disagree with his choice of speed-midgets or you can disagree with his defensive philosophy. Fretting over taller CBs for the Pats just seems like a waste of perfectly good angst.

Nothing wrong with Jamaal Charles except he would never see the field unless Faulk were cut loose. I assume that Belichick is content with his RB situation for a few years.

Disregard that St. Louis would NEVER have done that trade.

He could have been had at 15? You mean Detroit's pick? The team that apparently loved him? Good call.

This post is completely specious.

I don't believe either Howard (Never played in a 3-4, horrible in pass coverage, not great in play recognition) or Hart (already have 3 RBs) would have made the Pats roster. Sorry.

BTW, who are the "URFA's" that the Pats "gave away" picks for? Slater? Who some people have rated as the top special teams player in the draft? Come on. Are you truly b!tchinging about a 6th round pick? Come on. If Howard or Hart had value greater than who the Pats drafted, the Pats would have taken them.

Sorry, but Harte isn't anything special and neither is Howard.

You aren't that ignorant, FTW. Ruud has as much chance of making the roster as Alexander or Woods. And, even if the Pats put him on the practice squad, that's also part of the roster.

Whillite make make the team, but they now have 16 DBs in camp, I don't think that they are going to keep that many.

Could you please name the last 4th round pick that the Patriots cut PRIOR to that player's rookie season starting?

Actually, no he couldn't have. If you had been watching the draft coverage, it was announced that the GIANTS were planning on taking Slater if the Pats hadn't.

Hart is nothing special.

Its already come out that the Pats thought more of Mayo than Long. So, you'd have the Pats give away 2 picks for a lower rated player? That's not intelligent at all.

That's funny. Most of the "draftniks" with even half a reputation said that the Pats didn't reach for Mayo.

Sorry, FTW, unless you gained the power of seeing the future from Ms. Cleo, there's no way for you to say that Long is a "Franchise" player and Mayo is not.

OK. Where to start.

Ikeguonu is still waiting for his trial. He's facing up to 3 years in jail for felony burglary.

Thomas may be "taller" but he doesn't jump nearly as high as Wheatley. Wheatley outjumps him by nearly 8 inches. Do you really think that the 3 inch height difference translates into 8 inches in vertical? Also, Wheatley ran a 6.74 3 cone and a 4.2 shuttle. Thomas ran a 7.07 3 cone and a 4.24 shuttle.

Davis - Why do the Pats need a TE who is a mediocre to poor route runner and has issues actually blocking people?

I think the Patriots have only had average drafts since 2003. This year is no different, just an average draft. But the roster is already deep so adding more quality youth only helps the cause.

Mayo will contribute on special teams, 3rd downs and passing situations as a rookie and if he can bulk up should be a 3 down player. The rest of the players seem about average or below average compared to the players picked at similar draft slots.

The main thing is they have an extra 2nd round pick plus the compensatory picks for Samuel (3rd), Stallworth (5th) and Gay (maybe 5th). They seem to be content adding more youth, this will allow them to sign the next wave or core players (Wilfork, Mankins).

As an aside, if Seau comes back the LB would look like.

Thomas, Crable
Bruschi, Mayo
Seau, Alexander, Hobson
Vrabel, Woods

That would be among the deepest LBs core in the league and the best news, no Larry Izzo!

This may be one of the most ridiculous ideas that I've ever read posted on this board. #7 and #69 is barely enough to trade up to #5 overall.

To get to #2 overall would have cost is #7 and #62 and our #1 next year... assuming St. Louis was interested. That's three starters in exchange for Chris Long. Still interested?
