If you thought the Pats didn't get enough for #7 that's nothing compared to what Baltimore did right after them. Trading #8 overall to the Jags for #26, two 3rds(71, 89) & a 4th(125th overall) was an absolute joke.

I thought it was pretty good. 3rd rounders can be gold...cheap too.

They get out of the #8 pick, which is high cost, boom / bust. #26 pick is usually a pretty good player.

I thinkt he draft chart basically overvalues high picks as it doesn't take into account the huge salaries they get.

I'd trade the #1 pick even up for the #28 pick, that's how bad it is. I'd probably trade it even up for a 3rd rounder.

"LOL, that's why you're not a GM!!". Yeah, whatever. The point is that high cost picks are stupid. If he's a bust you ruin the team. If he's not you get fair value for his services.

Well compare that to what the Eagles pulled over on the Panthers.

They sent their 1st, #19 overall, to Carolina for their 2nd and 4th round picks this season and a 1st in 2009. And Carolina is likely to be in the bottom half again next season.

Trading a future first is so bad, you never know what will happen to your team. Carolina assumes with a healthier Jake they can make the playoffs, but how do you know. I like the confidence though.

The Ravens and Newsome must be thinking of salary and somehow got nervous their qb would be gone.

Baltimore didn't have a lot of room with the cap, so when Ryan was gone, it was prudent for them to trade down. I don't understand their pick though, lower division and all? But, then again, the one position this team has not been able to evaluate and draft effectively has been the QB. Their best draft pick at that position was released after training camp and is now starting for the Browns.

Actually I think this was a really good move for the Ravens. Not that I put much stock in the draft charts but if you used that to guage this trade the Ravens really killed them in value.

But more importantly they moved back to a spot where value wise it actually made a little sense to draft the QB they got (still getting the much needed QB) and picked up a whole bunch more talent.

I don't know what value chart you're looking at, but mine says they were off by about 500 points, which amounts to a mid 2nd round pick at worst.

They need OL help just as badly. Granted they did get Oniel Cousins, but would you rather have Flacco/Cousins or Clady/Brohm?

Seeing as they took Flaco with Brohm still on the board I imagine they would have perfered it their way plus it would have been Flaco/cousins/picks or Clady/Brohm and when you put it that way I'll take Flaco/cousins/picks.

I guess I was off on the draft chart...but I did say I don't care about those things. I thought I heard someone on serius this mourning say the Ravens got 800 points more on the value chart I must have heard it backwards though. I guess it said the Ravens gave up 800 points not got.

The thing is, I've now heard people use that one Carolina deal as the justification for calling just about every other trade in the draft lousy. The Carolina deal was the exception, for whatever reason -- it looks like nobody really wanted to trade out and they had to overwhelm Philly. But that doesn't render every other trade in the draft bad. Baltimore wanted a QB, so they HAD to get out of #8 however they could.

The funny thing is that when I read the title of this thread, I assumed it would be about trading up to #18 to draft an incredibly raw shotgun QB from 1-AA. :)

Carolina was dumb too, but at least they got guys of value at those picks with Stewart & Otah. If the Ravens wanted a QB, so bad then why didn't they offer St. Louis everything for Matt Ryan, who Haurbaugh supposedly coveted? Perhaps they did, but in the end I think they just gave Jacksonville a sweetheart deal. By not having to surrender their 2nd round pick the Jags were able to trade up AGAIN to nab Quentin Groves. :bricks:

Well that only added to the stupidity of it. lol

If the Panthers have a good season, those picks will likely be a big part of that success. If the Panthers suck, Fox won't be around to worry about the 2009 draft anyway. Not saying that it was a good move...just saying that the draft and coaches on the hot seat don't mix.

I think they did pretty well considering the current economic model. I was thinking last week that if things donn't change, would you see future straight up trades, #7 for #12 for example, with no other consideration- simply the economic factor?

Speaking of jokes . . .

What do you get back if you exchange three quarterbacks for a nickel defense?
Answer: The Baltimore Ravens. :D

Thank you! There are so many "why didn't they..." questions about trades, and this is a great reminder that you simply can't always pick and choose.

Some well-respected posters on this board have said things like "I have nothing against Mayo, but he was overdrafted, pure and simple. They could have safely gotten him anywhere before #15!" (I am not exaggerating.) Think about it...the highest guy on the Pats board at #7 is probably safe for the next half-dozen picks so they successfully trade down to #10 and nab him for way less money and an extra pick. The reaction: they got "bad value" for the trade and "overdrafted" by a whopping 3 slots.

We can all sit here & say anything's possible & we wouldn't be wrong. lol But this is a message board, so to keep things interesting we have opinions.

When you're talking about the 1st round though every slot is worth a few millions $$$. So it's not something that should be so easily sneezed at IMO. My bigger issue with the Pat's draft came later though. A no name QB in the 3rd round??? He better be Brady's replacement in 5 years.

I'd much rather overdraft by a few slots and be assured of getting the guy I wanted. When you get really cute and keep trading around, that's when you end up missing out on the guy you wanted all along. People said Mankins and Branch were overdrafted too.

And besides neither player (Mayo or Wheatley) was considered to be overdrafted by the Pats. So that's all that matters anyway. Draft the guys that best fit your system, coach them well, and away you go.

bakes...What's wrong with drafting a quality backup, a QB who Jaworski and Mayock both had high on their boards, both loved, and other teams apparantly had higher on their boards then Henne and Brohm. Again, just because Brady (or Manning for that matter) haven't missed games doesn't mean that you ignore the backup QB position. Either team is screwed royally if either one had to miss a game let alone an extended period of time.

It's easy to say backup QB isn't an important position until Brady misses a game and we're all screaming that the Pats don't have a quality backup.

Yes, the Ravens were left scrambling, but their trade down then up was targetting only 1 of the QBs(Flacco) partly because of the proximity. They got their guy, granted they gained "only" a 3rd for dropping 18 spots, but look what they did with their 3rd rounders!! They got 3 players that will make their team and therefore their draft if Flacco doesnt go bust. They are one of the best drafting teams, to me I think ATL made worse decisions, and maybe should have taken the picks for Ryan.....they need em.

I have quibbles with the draft too (I'm a little wary of Crable), but I like the O'Connell pick a lot. After securing some speedy young talent in the back 7 with the first 3 picks, that's a great spot to swing for the fences. O'Connoll's a project, but with ALL the stuff you can't teach: tremendous size, tremendous arm strength, excellent all-around athlete, smart & a natural leader.
