This guy is an idiot,Mayo would have dropped to 20 or so but it could have been worse if we had picked an OL in the first round or even a Chris Long who is a 4-3 player. - I think we passed with a B- on day one, certainly not so bad.

Atlanta made a few bonehead decisions IMO and Baltimore had a worthless trade in the lower first round and should be held more as losers than NE at this point.

It's official: today's a win.

Re: John Clayton "New England one of the biggest losers on first draft day"

Cleveland had a rough day.

Mayo was just picked by one of 3 of ESPN's guys (forgot who it was who said it but its not Casserly who I enjoy listening to,hes very good) in a draft discussion to win defensive rookie player of the year and Mayo was picked by 1 of them,I guess they did not discuss this with Clayton first or there would have been bloodshed on the studio floor

He probably said the same thing about Mankins too.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to Clayton. Never is good to listen to draft analysis from an insider.

Re: John Clayton "New England one of the biggest losers on first draft day"

He says we probably drafted a pro-bowler.

Then fails us.

What a ******* ******.

Re: John Clayton "New England one of the biggest losers on first draft day"

Mayo was also picked to win Defensive Rookie of the Year by Marshall Faulk and another guy on the NFL Network today.

Re: John Clayton "New England one of the biggest losers on first draft day"

More predictable anti Patriots spew from a proven Patriots hater. I'm sure it didn't take long for the news BB and Pioli had told the Worldwide Sports Leader to go **** themselves today on the interview request to make it through the hallways in Bristol.

We could have somehow gotten Gholton AND Rivers and Clayton would have found a way to call us losers.

Marshall Faulk? Really?* The Patriot hater?* Wow.* Anyway, Clayton is a freaking homo.* I have no idea why any organization, even ESPN employs this tool.* He has his mouth around Manning's member 24-7, so of course he hates the Pats.

Marshall Faulk said that and put the jinx on us?

Now might as well say Mayo will be on IR by August,Thanks Marshall you azzhole!

Overall I tend to agree with Clayton. To a point.

The Mayo pick was OK. Not great but OK. I believe Rivers may have been a better choice but Mayo was projected early so we cant be down on it yet as it may turn out ok.

However the rest of the day certainly was a loser for the Pats After waiting all day long, anticipating some kind of a move by them to move up a bit in the 2nd round...nothing happened and then came the 2nd round pick after many hours and they draft another 5-9 cb midget who soaking wet doesnt weigh as much as a sack of flour.

Clayton is pretty much on target with this one and many fans here just dont want to agree with him because of his past history coming down on the Pats a lot and his participation in the spygate fiasco.

However in this instance I think he is correct. Overall the Pats can be considered in the losers bracket as of now.

Its not easy agreeing with Clayton but realistically this time he is pretty much on target.

The Pats were very, very lackluster today.

You know,I thought I saw stretch marks around the outer lips and mouth of Clayton on my HDTV but thought it was just a fuzzy picture from the Hi-def,Now I know how he got those stretch marks
Peyton you devil you

I was also quite surprised.

As far as Clayton goes with the “Probably a Pro-Bowler, but bad pick” he’s obviously talking from an economical standpoint. He probably could have very well fell into the 20’s and we could have gotten him for a lot cheaper. No matter the player, the cheaper the better as always.

But since that wasn’t an option, we traded down as low as we could and got the guy we wanted.

When a guy isn’t projected to go in the Top 20 and you give him Top 10 money I can see where Clayton’s coming from economically speaking. But at the end of the day most of us are hyped about Mayo and see a very bright future ahead so all is well.

Re: John Clayton "New England one of the biggest losers on first draft day"

Did he say this before or after he tried to get into Gillette Stadium and had the door slammed in his face?

They say the same thing about the Pats every year. Meanwhile, we go to the playoffs while all the teams who had stellar drafts get their top ten pick again come December.

The reason they didn't move up is because they were waiting for their guy. They had all the ammo they needed to move up, 4 picks in the next 30, and yet tey stayed. Do you know why? It certainly wasn't because they coveted a player that went in the 15-20 picks before theirs. It was because the guy they picked was valued higher than all the guys 15-20 picks before theirs.

People on this board said the exact same stuff about Deion Branch several years ago. Too small. A reach. He would have been there in the 4th round, etc.

Re: John Clayton "New England one of the biggest losers on first draft day"

The Pats became a loser for the 2008 draft when Goodell stole the 31st pick. End of story. Mayo should be a great pick. Three picks in rd 3 will rejuvenate the franchise. Clayton is a buffoon.

Thanks for your draft "expertise". By the way, what did "Chicken neck say about Logan Mankins"...hmmmm. Clayton is a freaking tool. I am sorry, but if the Pats thought Rivers was better than Mayo, they would have taken him. Also, they have 3 third round picks. If they thought anyone was worthwhile to trade up, they would have done so. Our coach just went 18-1. They blew the Super Bowl, but I think I will trust HIM and not chicken neck homo on draft decisions and your analysis, thank you.

A lot of this post is very, very shortsighted. I mean, even if we accept your ridiculously fervent (and, imo, off-base) premise that the Patriots went one for two on their picks, how on Earth does that qualify them as "losers?"

I understand you preferred Rivers to Mayo, but can you please acknowledge the OBVIOUS FACT that the Patriots clearly did not? Everyone knew Cincy was taking Rivers at #9 when Ellis went to New Orleans. You think the Patriots didn't? How many times PRE-DRAFT did we have to hear that they saw Rivers and Mayo as similar, but preferred Mayo for you to be convinced by, and satisfied with, what transpired?

"Lackluster?" Why? Because they didn't trade up and take the CB you had on your list? I don't claim to know much of anything about Wheatley, but I do know this - the Patriots got that pick in IN RECORD TIME. They obviously feel very strongly about this guy.

"A midget?" You seem to think a player who's about half an inch shorter than All-Pro Asante Samuel is too small to be effective.

Listen, I don't mind divergent opinions, but please at least have the intelligence to back up said divergent opinions with something approaching savvy. Can we please boot some of the newbie myopics who have taken over this once awesome site? Please?

Re: John Clayton "New England one of the biggest losers on first draft day"

Mayo would have been there at 21?

I doubt he would have gotten past Detroit at #15.
