I don't get the Mayo move. Why do the Pats need an undersized linebacker who struggles to get off blocks? I could understand a cover 2 team drafting Mayo, but he doesn't seem like a fit for the Pats' scheme.

It's like chocolate pudding and mayo -- the two just don't seem to mix.

If we needed a speedy ILB for situational defense, why draft that guy with a #10 pick, especially when you have CB need and there are still great CBs on the board.

Can someone explain it to me? Seriously.

Mayo is a maniac with charisma, smarts and every athletic quality you could want. In 6 months you'll love the guy.

BTW at 6'1 1/2, 242 lbs, he's as big as David Harris or Patrick Willis.

look, if all we get from this draft is 10+ years of great LB playmaking by mayo, im set with the draft....

but man ohh man i hope it works out...

This is a very good pick by the Patriots.. he will fit a huge need for the next 5 years..

242 is plenty big. Bruschi has been playing for years at that weight.

In year 2 can Mayo go 16 games without breaking down physically from the OG's, C's and FB's that will be pounding on him for 60 plus plays per game.

I just can't figure this out. It makes me ill.

How can you not figure this out? You think he's too small?

Struggles to get off blocks? Have you seen him play? He attacks the LOS, scrapes effectively and fills the hole. He engages blockers with his inside shoulder and arm, extends to full-press, reads and quickly sheds. Most importantly, his back is flat, his hips are low, his head is up, his weight is above his toes. He plays with perfect form. In run support, he runs to the play in this "coiled" position. In zone or when getting in someone's hip, he remains low with his lower body on a good swivel and keeps his momentum toward the ball. The kid is a baller.

Also, 240 at 6'1 is a big dude. What do you want, a 270 lb 21 year old who can hang clean 500 and run a 4.2? Christ, people who have never played a snap above high school should really learn keep quiet when evaluating tallent. Look at his build, he's a thick SOB. He just looks like a thumper. Check-2 backer? Really? You sure you don't mean Ali Highsmith?

He has versitility playing both Sam and Mike postions. He took a few games to acclimate to Mike but once he did, he was dominant. He led the SEC in tackles last year. He has fluid and smooth hips in pass coverage, can shoot gaps and close effectively. All three traits the Pats inside backers have been sorely lacking the past two years.

I really can't possibly see how you don't feel like you have eaten a fist-full of viagra over this pick. Mayo's gonna be a stud in this scheme in a few years. Book it.

Bruschi is 6-1 247 Mayo is 6-1 242.

the way I see it is Mayo is a Bruschi clone without the smarts, but much better in pass coverage. Mayo has 2 years with Bruschi. Hopefully he can learn something then he will be as smart as Bruschi as well as being an athletic freak. That's what you want from your #10 pick. This year he will come in on 3rd downs and play ST. Next year he should be starting.

Bruschi isn't 6'1'', he's more like 5'11 1/2''. I also believe 247 is very generous, despite his listed weight.

Mayo had a 26 on the Wonderlik and BB went off on how smart he is today. He is known for making all the line calls etc., and his football IQ is one of his strongest qualities.

Without the smarts?!? I think you're describing Keith Rivers.

Belichick would not have drafted Mayo if he didn't have the smarts. From the post-draft interviews, it sounds like the staff spent a lot of time with Mayo drawing up plays and talking about adjustments. BB mentioned specifically that he's been calling the plays for the Vols D.

Realize this, fans. Mayo is the highest rated and highest drafted player in the BB era, after Seymour. It's entirely reasonable to expect that Mayo will be the captain of the D in two or three years, and the cornerstone of the team.

I think he was saying how they were similarly sized, so it shouldn't be a problem. I agree Bruschi is generously listed.

Do you even watch football?

Players are only allowed to block downfield on running plays. In a good game where a team is running effectively, that is 40 plays.

Of those plays, how many of those are short-yardage, draws, broken plays or quick hitters with no intention of blocking downfield? Let's say half. Down to 20 plays.

Of those plays, how many have a lineman or FB make it to the second level and not get caught up in the half ton of humanity on the DL or the fairly large OLB manning the outside? Say half again...now only 10 plays.

So you are saying that Mayo can't survive, in the worst case scenario, being run into 10 times a week? And Belichick, Pioli and countless scouts missed the fact that their 240+ pound linebacker is made of glass (sorry everyone)?

Now add up how many times noodle-armed QBs ate up the Pats throwing 10 yard slants or drag routes over the middle. Bet that number is significantly higher than the number of times a lineman/FB made it to the 2nd level cleanly with an untouched RB following close behind.

They didn't draft Mayo to bang his head into a wall all game long. Maybe the Pats will fill your Ted Johnson fantasy tomorrow. Until then, we get it. You don't like Mayo.

Bruschi's combine height was 6'1.

As for his weight, the year Brsuchi came back from his stroke, he played "heavy" at 255. Those words came right out of Bruschi's mouth.

Watch the highlights of this kid - he's very impressive working his way through traffic.

If you stand next to him, you'll realize he's not that tall anymore, if he ever was.

Ok, so he takes a dump and 247 becomes generous :)

Mayo is definitely smart. I bet he was rated higher than Rivers because of it. Since Rivers score was 16. He'll be a good fit on the bengals.

Mayo is a good-sized linebacker with very good athleticism, but it's the mental side of the game that many here feel makes him special. Intelligent, instinctive, team captain, student of the game, filmroom junkie...pairing that with the physical tools makes for the rare package that is a Pats ILB. I'm optimistic.

Well I liked Mayo for the Pats better than Rivers at least. Although 10 seems awful early unless the Pats believe Buffalo was gonna take him. Nobody in picks 10-15 were looking for anything other than OL/RB.
Rivers is even smaller, like 235, and hasn't been noted as the smartest guy.

I can't really beleive the whining of some people.

of those who feel they are scratching your heads... who would you have picked?
