So I don't know if many of you know about him, but I attend the same university as him, and actually went through the same program as him so I know him a little bit. Anyways, a few weeks ago we had scouts from the Patriots out here checking him out and a few other players. A few weeks ago he was rated #39 at ILB and has now jumped up to #16. He was fourth in the nation in tackles last season at the D2 level (125). I know he has traveled to SF, and has also been scouted by Seattle and KC. Has anybody heard any news about him out in Boston? A possible 7th round selection.

Do you think he could play SS? He's got the measurables, but I honestly didn't get to see him play, so I'm not sure how good his coverage ability is.

@6' 1" 228 lbs, he's not coming here unless he can play a competent safety. Even then, it's hard to see him beating out Ray Ventrone. PS candidate at very most.

I don't know if he's quick enough to play safety. I just got excited when I saw scouts from the pats all the way out here in the northwest.

NFL Draft Scout has him projected as a 7th round/Priority Free Agent selection at ILB. The Pats scouted one of Buffalo's LBs a couple years ago who played at OR State, he was too small for the 3-4, but he was considered (and is) a good coverage LB. I'd imagine Shane is being considered for Special Teams, perhaps as heir-apparent to Larry Izzo. In time he might transition to SS. If the Pats to sign him it's likely as a UDFA. They need to sign another 17 players to fill out the offseason roster, subtract the 8 draft picks and you're looking at 7-9 UDFA signings depending on picks picked up in trade.

So how crazy is Shane? Can he run and break wedges like Izzo?

Belichick & Co. do draft players to play roles. This draft, they may want better coverage players for their packages. Size may not be as much an issue as in the past for these role players. Just look at the list of prospects they've shown interest in. Some certainly don't fit as starters but may excel on ST earning their keep.
