Pats—interesting scenario but certainly most unlikely…trade down 1 spot with Ravens, pick up a 3 swap or 4 and take Gholston

Scenario 9
Dorsey
Ryan
Gholston
Ellis
McFadden
Pats—Draft Chris Long

I think the moral of the story is this...If the Saints or Bengals trade up above us to get Ellis, or the Chiefs take Ellis, we'll be in great shape. If not, he'll be on the board when we pick, and we'll be able to trade down a few spots or draft him.

Exactly..... we do know this:

Matt Ryan, Vernon Gholston OR Sedrick Ellis will be there at #7 (that we do know and with that said, one of 4 things can be done:)

1. We take Ellis and worry about the 5-man D-Line rotation later and have our Big Vince insurance.

2. Deal the Ellis chip to 9 or 10, grab (DRC/McKelvin or Mayo) and have that extra 3rd to allow us to deal up for a guy that we love either at the top of R2 or the middle of R2 (Curtis Lofton anyone?).

3. Take Gholston move Vrable or AD back inside and have dreams of him bearing down on Goober 18........

4. Deal Ryan to 8, 13 or 14, grab (DRC/McKelvin or Mayo) and have that extra 3rd to allow us to deal up for a guy that we love either at the top of R2 or the middle of R2 (Curtis Lofton anyone?).

Scenarios 1,2, and 3 are all very similar Ellis would be the one available...maybe they take him IF they think he will truly be Vince insurabce and/or backup...OR they can trade...
4 and 5 are similar in that I think they would definitely trade...different teams (RB) and QB..but a trade no less.
6 and 7 are again the same..would they take Gholston? If they think he's worth the buchs they will..but maybe they value getting other picks...
8 is a much more interesting scenario..and would also happen if Clady was in the top 6...
HERE it would be whether a trade would bring more than picking Gholston..
9..I agree they would take CLong in a nanosecond.. I guess the real question is how strongly they like Ellis or Gholston......OR if they wish to trade down for better value..

You have brought up a great point that I never considered. If Ryan is there at #7, the Patriots take him, then ship him off to the highest bidder, reminiscent of the Eli Manning/Phillip Rivers deal.

That's a couple of things...

[all assumes a deal is not already worked out between the teams, because if a deal has been worked out, I'm guessing it already has been, then there's no reason to draft Ryan]

1) Incredibly risky. One of the potential suitors is the Ravens, and they pick 10 minutes after the Pats do. So you have 10 minutes to work out a deal...What if the Ravens don't draft someone that you want?

2) Keep in mind the Giants badly overpaid considering the Chargers were in deep since Eli never wanted to go there. They called his bluff but he wasn't bluffing. Accorsi had a hard-on for Eli so he gave up a ton. If you're thinking we could trade Matt Ryan, move down a few slots, and pick up next year's #1 pick, then I have a bridge to sell you.

The basic point is any deal for the Pats with other clubs (Ravens, Panthers, whoever) is probably already in place. If it's not in place, then you risk getting even less than you want for the player.
