Mortensen: C. Long was #2 on Parcells' board

could be BS, but I actually believe it, and I think Dorsey would have been their third option, as insiders within the organization suggested he was among their favorites.

Chris Long is going to be an outstanding pro, and I'll be somewhat surprised to see him make it out of the top 3/4 picks.

If this is true, then there is a good chance they could trade Taylor and maybe 32nd pick to get Chris Long if he starts falling.

If that was an offer they made to the pats, would/should they take it?

To move to #7, dolphins would have to throw in a lot more than that.. Taylor will fetch no more than a bottom 3rd 1st round pick.. (I say its going to be a high 2nd or mid 2nd and 3rd)..

Why the heck would the Pats take a 2nd round pick and a past his prime Talyor for pick #7, particularly with C. Long available? The Pats could get a MUCH better deal then that. Moving out of the first round completely is just not smart either (2nd round and later picks can only be signed to 4 year deals). Sorry but JT is not worth more than a 3rd round pick at this point in his career.

I never said the Pats would take it :) Just if he starts falling. It would really depend on who's available at #7 to make the trade. If they are looking at a CB or trading for Taylor and the 32 it may be worth it. I would rather have Taylor and the 32nd rather than DRC or McKelvin

This story is very inaccurate. Here's the truth. Gholston was Miami's #2 guy all along and they didn't even consider Chris Long. Here's what they were trying to do.

They were trying to get Jake Long to agree to their terms of the contract and a very commonly used method is to put pressure on the agents with the threat of another option. The problem in this case was their #2 player (Gholston) was represented by the same agency as Jake Long and they won't bid against eachother (naturally). So what you do is you have to convince them your interested in another player who they would think could be picked by you in this position and the only logical choice was Chris Long.

Just like when an agent throws out some bogus information that another team is interested in their client so they could give the impression to that team causing said team to bid against itself therefore driving up the price for his client.

In this case they wanted to use Chris Long's agent to cause Jake Long's agent (Condon's group) to hurry and decide on their contract offer because they realized they gave him WAY to much time to decide (1 week) and Condon's group was shopping the offer to the Rams to drive up the price and the Dolphins were going to use Chris Long's agent to counter.
In the end, they didn't have to do that.

Hope this explains the situation for you all.

By the way, Chris Long wont get past KC now that the can get a Tackle or move up from #17. Plus, stick it to the Raiders for passing on Chris.

It's getting more and more likely that Sedrick Ellis is going to be the pick. Although, I wouldn't be shocked if they took Rivers or Derrick Harvey. I do hope however, that either Long or Gholston do fall, but the possibilty of that is remote.

PFT and ESPN reported that Gholston was #2 on the Miami board, but that was before J Long was actually signed, when Parcells had every reason to lie about his intentions. But this story, that C. Long was the real #2, was published after J. Long was signed, and when Miami had little reason to lie.

Why would Miami lie about their Plan B after the fact? If they believe Gholston is truly the #2 player, then pumping up C. Long's value in the press makes Gholston more likely to fall to a division rival like the Pats or Jets.

If they truly believe CLong is the #2 player, then admitting it makes him less likely to fall to a division rival such as the Jets or Pats.

It seems logical to me that Mortensen's story is accurate, and C.Long was in fact #2 on the Miami board.

That leads to this thought... if CLong actually was #2 on the Miami board, then Parcells must believe he is a fit for 3-4 OLB, contrary to the belief of some on this board.

Naughty. :p

Mortenson has been long known to run with whatever Parcells leaks to him, so I find him basically useless in draft reporting. If Parcells mentioned that he was going to draft a future HOF kicker out of UMass-Dartmouth in the first round, Mort would break the story.

Pony,

I know how much you like Chris Long but, your affection for him has caused you to overlook half of the TRUTH I told you. Mortenson is simply taking the plan I broke down for you and adding his OPINION to make a story where it was all a secondary ploy that may have been used if needed. He is very upset because he was scooped by Jay Glazer on the signing in the first place and he's the one guy at ESPN who is supposed to be real close to Parcells. So when he doesn't get the breaking news on the Jake Long signing he wants to make sure people don't question how strong his "sources" are so he adds some intrigue to a dead story and prints it to try and get people to buy what he's selling and get some Internet hits on the ESPN website.

Just put aside your affection for Chris for one second and read the real story I wrote and read this and it will ALL become clear for you.

Chris will be a very good Pro but it won't be in a Patriots uniform and some will have to start to realize this so you could enjoy your weekend.

If you can't see what I'm trying to tell you then you obviously just don't want to see the truth.

The truth is the 3-4 teams at the Top believe in Gholston's talent over Chris's.

I just want you to realize something about these Ploy tactics. When teams negociate contracts they don't need to use the media to get their point accross. Agents are the ones more likely to leak information to drive up prices. All Parcells would have to do is call Condon and convince him there is a CHANCE that they are going to start another negociation. All the fans know is what is reported but there is so much that's not report that it would really surprise you of some of these negociations. Your putting WAY TOO MUCH into media reports. Your also assuming Parcells is giving out this information to Mort. BIG MISTAKE.

Ask yourself this: If Mort is so close to Bill, then why did Jay Glazer scoop him (not to mention Tom Curran about the signing being close in the first place) on the Jake Long signing in the first place? People would be surprised if they knew where most these ESPN guys get there information.

Thanks for responding again PT55!

Actually, despite what you may believe, my interest in C. Long has not clouded my judgment at all. I like Gholston, and would be happy if the Pats draft him. I realize teams believe Long has been overcoached to some extent, has been trained at his craft since he was a toddler and as a result is miles ahead of Gholston technique wise, but Gholston is a clean slate with better raw tools, and a great coach could mold him into a dominant force. However, C Long is probably the safer pick, and as you pointed out in your other posts, that is a big issue at the top of the draft, and one of the reasons Miami took J. Long. Gholston is a late bloomer from a much different background than Long and I believe BB can get the most out of him.

BTW, what are your thoughts on R. Clady and J. Mayo?

Pony,
That's a very good observation on the Long/Gholston front.

Me Personally

Clady is a good tackle but in my opinion, the gap between him and Long is greater than the gap between him and Williams, Otah and Cherilus.

Now, I saw you post with Mayo/Willis. Watching these athletes Willis is just an absolute beast at the position and is a more complete and mature football player than Mayo (at this stage of their respective careers). I do like Mayo though and feel with the right coaching and modivation he certainly has the physique and measurables to get to Willis's level. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he's Michael Holley's 1st round sleeper he's anouncing tommorrow during his show. I personnally like Gholston, Long, Rivers, Groves ahead of him but on a trade down I could see Mayo as a target.

Just a couple more players...:)

Avril and Lawrence Jackson. What are your thoughts?

I gotta be honest I would be SHOCKED if I heard the Patriots picked Mayo at #7. I know he is skyrocketing up the draft boards, but I just couldn't imagine it. I know that ILB i a HUGE need for the Patriots and contrary to what people think the Patriots do actually draft for need. So, I can understand it, but I don't really see it happening.

On another note, I hope the Jets pass on McFadden, I just want to see what the Patriots will do if he is on the board and Gholston and Long are gone. Would anyone be shocked if they took him? Not me.

While I like Mayo, very much in fact, I prefer Erin Henderson for Pats ILB.

Dude, you sound like a cult leader, and I'm not talking about the Patriots style cult, either. More like Scientology. "Believe only me, I know the real truth."

Maybe there's rigor elsewhere, but there's none in this post.
