For your viewing pleasure. I'll get one out just after the draft too.

At this time, the Patriots have 63 players on their roster. That is the sixth lowest total in the league, behind the Chiefs (58), Chargers (60), Ravens (61), Bears (62), and Cardinals (62).

The offseason roster limit is 80 players. That does not include un-signed rookies; however, there is a lot less flexibility with that number than in years past, now that NFL Europa exemptions and NFLE bonus exemptions are gone. Teams with the highest roster numbers right now are the Broncos (80), Buccaneers (77), Packers (73), Texans (72), Jets (71), and Dolphins (71).

*Note: All numbers include tendered RFAs and ERFAs, who haven't signed their tenders yet, and thus don't count against the roster limit -- so these numbers are technically off, but most ERFAs and RFAs will sign their tenders within the next few weeks.

Based on the Patriots' roster total of 63 players, they will be able to sign 17 undrafted free agents following the draft, to give them a total of 80 players. However, if they do happen to sign 17 such UDFAs, which is unlikely, they would have to make cuts just to sign each of their rookies. Therefore, it's likely that the Patriots will sign 8-12 UDFAs following the draft, depending on how many picks they make this weekend.

thanks, i guess i didn't realize they had that many slots open.

I fully expect LeKevin Smith to stay on this team. After all, he had a sack in the Superbowl. Not many people can say that.

I was looking for a list like this. thanks!

I agree that they will not sign 17 UDFAs...more likely in the number that you stated, but what usually happens is that a bunch are cut after the rookie mini camp...others are brought in and the number is whittled down way before the summer. I think it will be interesting to see about how this is done given the lesser flexibility of numbers with the NFLE gone as at that time it was not all that unusual to have rosters of 85 or 88, What teams do as well is to bring in players on a try out basis..as this gets around even having the UDFA count to that number as some teams bring in 20-30 UDFAs for a look see.
A great list!

Right, there always seem to be a few who are cut after minicamp.

From last year, Denny Poland, Justin Warren, and Jake Nordin.

From 2006, Jakari Wallace, Sam Smith, Keon Jackson, and Remi Ayodele.

From 2005, Michael Rogers, Matt Phillips, Mark Bartosic, Travis Conway, Mike Lorenz, DeCori Birmingham, Earl Charles, DeMarco McNeil, and Michael McGrew.

Of those names, Ayodele (DAL/ATL/DAL's 53 2007), Birmingham (NYJ/SF/NYG/IND/CAR), and Nordin (BAL's 53 2007) all have seen time on NFL teams and/or practice squads. Charles and McGrew were on the Patriots' IR in 2006. All the rest have been out of football since, IIRC.

Just one minor correction:

Alexander is still an unsigned ERFA, which means that the Patriots will have 18 available spots for UDFAs following the draft. Still, his situation is just like a draftee, though: once he signs, they'll have to make cuts if they are up against the limit.

Quite impressive....you got the most obscure ones...IN addition....Bartosic came from the NFLE via Phila (I believe..was not a UDFA) and Jarvis Herring a safety and Gemera WIlliams a corner--both were signed as UDFAs in 06 and cut before camp..Williams returned later that year on the PSqd..Hurray for Pats trivia...

Good catch. I remember Herring was cut the morning of the first practice in 2006. I got there, and was trying to figure out who the new #88 was. When I got home, I checked Reiss to find out Herring was cut and Walter Rasby was signed.
