Banks: Jets completely obsessed with Pats' draft plans

The No. 6 Jets are calibrating every potential move they make with the No. 7 Patriots in mind. These two really don't like each other, and it's not even close to being hype in this case. Under no scenario does New York want to see Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan make it to New England's slot, because Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum and head coach Eric Mangini knows the Patriots will promptly put their draft slot up for auction and reap a bounty of picks from some quarterback-needy team.

The Jets have even gone so far as to talk with the No. 8 Ravens about what it would cost them to trade up to sixth for Ryan. Anything to keep the Patriots from hitting the jackpot. Hearing that, it kind of leads one to believe the Jets have decided to pass on Ryan, even though they reportedly love him. Then again, they could anticipate having multiple options that they like -- Chris Long or Darren McFadden among them -- and wanted to see how much the Ravens would give up to get their franchise quarterback.

We should trade up to #5 - that wouldn't cost too much - then trade down for more for someone wanting Ryan. Of course I'm kidding but . . .

However - all this doesn't necessarily help the Jets. Sure, if they trade down to 8 with Baltimore then it stops us from trading the pick for Ryan. However it also means that one player we wouldn't draft is gone and one more player we might want drops down to #7. What if we want Gholston (or Long or whoever) and he and Ryan are both there at #6 ? They can trade us out of Ryan but it moves another player down.

Exactly right. That's another decision they will have to make if the draft breaks right for us, which could (if the Rams take Dorsey) depend on whether the Chiefs take a pass rusher.

Talk aboout stupid on the Jets part if it's true. Why should they care if the Pats cash in? Cashing in is a matter of perception anyways. We thought Dallas got the best deal with the brady quinn move but the pats have #7 now.

It's smart to be aware of all the possibilities. If they can get 13 and 43 for example, or a 3rd from the Ravens (the Jets have no 3 right now) and they'd rather do that then get Long or Gholston or something, maybe they love Groves or Avril or somebody, then why not explore those options?

But if Gholston OR C Long is on the board, and the Jets want to trade down, ensuring one of those is a Pat, by all means, go ahead.

Why do you think Bill walked away from the HC job there and advised Eric to follow his mentor's lead? Eric had too much ego to take that heartfelt advice though, and that combined with Tangini's ego and Woody's pre existing obcession with everything NE = WTF are we doing. This is the JETS karma. They remain at least 2-3 years away from competing for the division, and that's only if they locate a functional QB at some point along the way. So what do they do - load up on expensive veteran FA's to position them to win enough games to save their jobs and face, and then obcess about making moves to thwart us instead of worrying about rebuilding their team.''

Whether it's Atl or a trade down with someone else, the highest values are CLong/Gholston and DMac at 3, so one of them will go in that slot. And it's time for Fat Eric to start getting nervous.

After much pondering....shouldn't the Jets be focusing on who they should draft? In addition, if they trade out so Baltimore can take Ryan, doesn't that give the Patriots one less team in the way so they can grab their guy (assuming there is a guy).

Oh BB, you are the master of headgames. If the Jets are worried about Ryan and the possibility of us trading out, theyre being stupid. If C. Long is there we take him and are happy, if Ellis or McFadden are there we trad eout and get the "bounty" of added picks. There are three or four guys who, if theyre there, we'd have anxious trading partners for.
