For 17 and 73...6 year 74 million dollar deal, and 31 guaranteed (wow).

My biggest hope for the Pats was Chris Long or Gholston, but now that seems unlikely.

No ground is lost if the Chiefs trade back with New Orleans or Cincinnati, or take Clady and wait for Harvey at 17. But taking C Long or Gholston seems too obvious.

I'm not so sure. I was doing some mock scenarios last night and there kept being runs on OLs in the top half of the first round, while 17 was a good spot to come away with a DE like Merling or Harvey. I'm thinking that:

Clady/Albert + Merling/Harvey > Gholston + Cherilus

Factor in KC's upfront desire for volume in this draft and your trade scenario seems the most logical. Trade down with Cinci which takes Ellis; grab Clady/Albert at 9, and take your DE at 17.

I also think C Long or Gholston seems obvious. Even if there is a run on players in the mid rounds. They can take that extra 3rd and move up about 5 spots if needed. Between Otah, Clady, or Albert one of them will fall.

It's a great deal for the Cheifs, because they don't have to reach to take an OL at #5. They probably had the deal setup already, and once JLong was gone they signed the contract.

Fair point. OK, then -- I currently have the Pats trading down with Carolina at 13. That's about where the last of the top OLs should go, so let's have a 2nd trade with KC to 17, which is the perfect spot to pick Quentin Groves. Funny how every topic ends up with me picking Quentin Groves, huh? :bricks:

This is Great News for those who want a trade down.

Pats fans could you weigh in on your thoughts.

Some possible positives for the Patriots:

This gives the Patriots a potential perfect trade partner because the Chiefs now have multiple 3rds and would be very interest in getting their DE in Long or Gholston then trading up to get Albert's and they're set. I bet they would happily overpay for the opportunity if they really like the prospects. Of course there is a matter of money but its the Chiefs right.

For those who want the trade down who would you select at #17?

What would you do with multiple seconds?

This trade hurts the Patriots chances of landing one of the elite defensive players. I wonder if the Chiefs would maybe take Alberts at #5 and go DE at #17, or would they even take say a Jeff Otah or Chris Williams at 17, and just focus on rebuilding their OL. Most likely the Chiefs get either Long or Gholston. The Cheifs could also probably wait till #11 to trade up to get Albert's and save themselves a 3rd round pick. I don't see any teams willing to trade up to #7, if Ryan and McFadden are gone. Your right the Chiefs trade with the extra 3rd's warrants consideration, but the Patriots are very deep as it is already, and having 4 3rd's doesn't make awhole lot of sense. Unless you package two of those thirds and get back into Round 2. Let's be honest the Pats are most likely stay at 7.

Hmm, it seems like you have all of the elite defensive players and all of the elite offensive players going before #7. There are only so many top 6 slots, though! (Roughly 6, by my count. )

In your scenario DT Sedrick Ellis falls to 7, and he is a very marketable trade commodity indeed. The least marketable of the Big 7, IMO, is McFadden.

I bet McFadden is there at #7 now. We know Miami & St. Louis aren't going to take him. Atlanta could, but they signed Michael Turner so it's highly unlikely. Where they go is important, but my guess is Ryan, if Dorsey is gone. The Raiders? Maybe, as anything is possible with them, but with Bush, Jordan, Fargas, and Rhodes, I doubt it. That brings us to the Chiefs. They won't take McFadden. They'll go OL, Ryan, or DL(E). What will the Jets do? Could McFadden & Ryan be there for them?

What do you guys think is the best case scenario here? Gholston being there for us to pick at #7, or a player of value, that we don't need, sliding down to #7, so we can get some bidders for that pick? Also, which player do you think would attract the most interest? Would McFadden or Ryan attract bidders, or would someone else?

I don't question one word of that (though I don't think they were getting Long or Gholston regardless). What I was responding to was your claim that this makes it harder for the Pats to trade down so they'll probably have to stay at #7 now. I don't see that at all.

I have the same disease...at #19 currently.


One thing we should mention is that with such a huge price paid for the rights to Jared Allen, Parcells could be looking to move Jason Taylor now. I doubt he'd trade him within the division though. But I'm fairly certain that Parcells would move him for a first, two thirds, and a swap of sixths, which is what Allen fetched.

Hehe. I don't blame you for having man love for Quentin Groves. Groves is a beast. Great size and speed for the position (259 4.5 40), and he is less of a conversion questionmark than Gholston. The only knock is that heart valve but I heard that he already had the operation and he's medically cleared. So I'd be happy to see him a Patriot.

BTW the 49ers are targeting Groves at #29, so I'm not so sure he'll last until round 2 anymore. That's a low enough pick where the 49ers could easily say, this is going to be the best value we can get for the pick.

Taylor is 33 years old, and will be 34 in September when the season starts. Allen just turned 26 three weeks ago. There is no way that Taylor fetches anything close to that. He might get the Dolphins a 2nd or 3rd. Most likely a 3rd & a 2nd day pick.

I would think the Chiefs would take Ellis at 5 and The best OL at 17. Or they can take Albert at 5 and a guy like Balmer or Merling at 17. I think that's a reach for Albert personally, but what do I know. They might love him that much.
