I have come to the conclusion that the Patriots will be trading out of the #7 pick and are at the absolute perfect spot to do so. Money and picks make it almost impossible to trade up into the top 5, and I think the patriots will be willing to take a little less to get out of the pick so here is how the different options work out.

#1 Ryan Falls to 7-Teams that will be interested:Ravens, Bears, Panthers

#2 McFadden falls to 7-Teams interested:Cowboys, Cardinals, Texans

#3 Ellis Falls to 7-Teams interested: Bengals, Saints, Panthers

I have to believe that one of these three is going to fall to 7, most likely Ellis, which I think would be the best for us because the Bengals and Saints would both be fighting to get up to grab him.

IMO the first round is way overrated. Sure there are some good prospects but the best players come from rounds 2-7. If you look back at past drafts, you can see that only 20% or so of the first rounders pan out as NFL starters..even fewer become stars. It may be a good idea to trade out of the first round completely and stockpile picks.

lets not get too crazy here brady, you have to remember that there is a limited amount of spots available on this roster, so getting out of the 1st all together is not wise either. I think there are some guys who can make an impact on this team right away, they just are not worth #7 money.

Of the top 7 (JLong, Dorsey, Ryan, McFadden, CLong, Gholston, Ellis), I would agree that the Pats should be able to trade down with any of them. The only one without a natural trading partner that I can find is CLong. I know teams would want him, but would he be enough of a differentiator on their team to pay the price in picks needed to get him. Any thoughts on a team that would likely want to trade up to get CLong at #7?

This is the one I'm nervous about. There are plenty of reports that McFadden isn't even the #1 back on every board, and the position is totally stacked in this draft.

But patchick, it just takes one team. One with and old crazy guy running the team. I think if the pats only asked for their 2 1st rounders, Jones would not be able to stop himself.

If McFadden falls, take him. Look back at the Super Bowl and ask yourself if the Pats' anemic offense that day could not have used McFadden.

McFadden can play right guard and tackle?

The only way I see this happening is if JJ thinks that the negotiations with Barber are doomed to failure. If Barber is signed, they need a complimentary back and as patchick notes, this draft is loaded with them.

I agree with you - that's why I hope the Rams take Gholston because I think he's the only player who the Raiders would maybe take over McFadden.

If Ellis is the one left, I think we may take him unless we get a really strong offer. He provides plenty of value as a rotation guy to keep the others fresh, a desperately needed backup to Wilfork and a good deal of playing time in sub packages on 2nd/3rd and long and short.

Wouldn't worry about that one. First of fall we could draft him. Second of all, I think the reason that he hasn't been mentioned as a possibility for a trade down is because the general concensus is he'll be off the board by #7.

I think there are a lot of teams that would relish the opportunity to get a guy that is considered a top 3 or 4 or 5 player in the draft by most. Especially in this age of pass-rushers.

I agree that we'll be able to trade down but I'm worried that we could miss a sweetheart deal for trading down as I could see the Jets doing the same thing right in front of us. Now, as others have said, if that means that someone falls to us, then sobeit, but I'd rather be on the clock with Ryan on the board then not, since I think we'd all prefer to trade down.

Only if Belichick can project him into a linebacker position with a reasonable amount of certainty. I wouldn't take that as a given.

Agreed, but I think that perception is changing. Look at the landscape now that some evaluation time has passed:

#1 JLong or Gholston
#2 Dorsey
#3 Dorsey or Ryan
#4 McFadden, Gholston or CLong
#5 JLong, Ellis or Albert (CLong depending on JAllen situation)
#6 Gholston, McFadden or CLong

The Jets look to be CLong's floor, but it is not a stretch to see JLong, Dorsey, Ryan, McFadden, Ellis and Gholston be the top 6.

CLong is not particularly fast off the edge. I'm not saying he isn't generally worth being picked at #7, just that I'm struggling to find the right mix of fit, need and cost (assuming that the Pats aren't the right team at the right position at #7).

Here's the problem I see with that scenario: if Jones is really serious in his McFadden obsession, the deal is done with the Jets, not Pats. The Jets are a legitimate threat to draft an RB themselves, and I think they'd be all over the deal. So if McFadden's around at #7, that most likely means that the Cowboys aren't biting.

I agree...Damn Jets.

Any team that could use a pass-rusher is an option. Plus we don't know if there's a team out there that loves him, in the teens, but that's not talked about again, because he's not expected to be there. If the Pats want to trade the C Long pick, I'm confident it won't be an issue.

That's a pretty big IF there. . . .

The one thing in our favor is Belichick can trade #7 for 50 cents on the dollar if he likes. He can shrug at the draft chart and do what he wants. Mangini and Tenenbaum don't have that resume behind them; especially in NY they may not be able to make a "below chart value" trade.
