Audibles

The following quotes are from NFL evaluators, coaches and front-office personnel, spoken on the condition of anonymity.

"(Arkansas RB) Darren McFadden does not run with a great base. He is no Adrian Peterson. His success will depend on the situation and team that drafts him."

"(Tennessee State CB) Dominic Rodgers-Cromartie is too tall, does not tackle and only has one kidney, and I’m supposed to be excited? He’s got 'bust' written all over him. Take away his last name and do you think everyone would be as excited?"

"(Michigan State WR) Devin Thomas does not like to get hit. He drops a lot of balls inside. You can see his obvious potential, but he does not get off press (coverage) easily and you can see too many obvious shy-aways. This year’s draft of receivers sucks."

"(Ohio State DE-OLB) Vernon Gholston can rush the passer, get to the quarterback and make big plays, and in the NFL, those are the guys that get paid. You wish he were better all-around, but it will be interesting to see where he lands. He needs to be in a '30' front."

"Marijuana today was like beer for a lot of us in high school. The question you have to answer is whether it is being used a couple times a year or whether it is habitual. I don’t have a problem with one, two or three beers a year. And let’s be realistic, it’s easier for some kids to get (marijuana) than beer."

"If I were trying to read Bill Parcells, I would think he likes (Vernon) Gholston better than Chris Long because he can coach the kid to pursue and play hard. He cannot make Chris Long come off the edge much faster."

"Atlanta should have taken the defensive tackle last year. Bobby Petrino should have known more about (Texans DT Amobi) Okoye than anyone. Now they have to make up for the mistake."

"I think the Jets will take the quarterback (Boston College's Matt Ryan) if he is there (at the No. 6 spot)."

"The 49ers need a quarterback, and they don't know it yet. I think J.T. O'Sullivan will wind up being their starter by October."

"Pittsburgh just lost an offensive lineman, and they don't have Russ Grimm to clean up the mess anymore. So, I could imagine they are thinking of taking a running back. That's the way most offensive line coaches think."

I dunno I just cant see the rats taking Ryan at #6, have they given up on Clemens already?

also whats a "30" front..?

I was wondering that myself..

& I agree with you 100%.. Jets are looking to make a playoff push this year.. Another season where u have the top 6 pick in the draft.. That smells of new managment (even though Johnson, their owner, said Mangini and Tan will be around for a while)..

30 front means a 3-4 defense. He's saying Gholston's best fit is at 3-4 rush LB.

Cromartie doesnt tackle? i seen him tackle quiet well a lot of times

He tackled well at the Senior Bowl but it was a big concern entering that game so his tackling prior to that must not have been too good.

you saw him play at college?

Time to step away from this kid.. He had only 2 ints last year in weaker division..

They should have just referred to our interactive draft last year & I would have shown them the light-

Is Rivers a better pick than Gholston??
A higher floor. Definitely not as high a ceiling because Ghouston is a freak athletically..

Considering all this talk about Vernon possibly going #1, not sure how I see him falling to us anymore. But stranger things have happened.

Is Rivers a better pick than Gholston??

Different Guys. One is ILB and the other is OLB.

So the better questions are what is more important to the team and what is more of a need?

This sounds like a certain journalists and not an NFL Scout or Talent Evaluator. A Professional Scout would not speak in these terms because it makes you sound like a journalists or an agent who trying to push your client by knocking someone who scourned you for a rival. A Professional Scout speaking on a condition of anonymity would be more detailed. For instance, If he questioned his height he would add how it's a problem when it comes to his hip turn (because of long legs) or something along more technical lines. This just sounds like a scourned agent or journalists. Nobody who's job is on the line will just call a kid a flat out bust because it's not an exact science and only journalists and/or fans concentrate on a players name and mention it in context of an evaluation as a negative or excuse.

"If I were trying to read Bill Parcells, I would think he likes (Vernon) Gholston better than Chris Long because he can coach the kid to pursue and play hard. He cannot make Chris Long come off the edge much faster."

This is information they got by overhearing what some scouts are saying about Chris Long's ceiling as opposed to Gholston's. The rumblings of projecting Chris's ability to get from a very good player to great player are in question. Some feel he is maxed out and others see Hall of Fame potential. Where as Gholston has many more salivating with what his upside could possibly be.

I picked these three players because they're the three players many fans here are concerned about. I don't believe these are "Direct Quotes" from NFL Personnel. Its easy to take bits and pieces and add your opinion and say its a source of anonymity because when you mis-quote or add your opinion you don't have to answer for it and it makes you look like you have "Better" sources than your competitors with a closer and better relationship to "insiders" that will give you more brash and harsh opinions. I call B.S. from what I hear, nobody is saying things is these manners.

Reading from different sources and the fact the url is directly from a well established weekly paper, I say its more than just bits and pieces.. And I for one think Crom is going to be a bust.. He is a work out warrior who had a very uneventful college career..
