Am I the only one that thinks the Dolphins' draft strategy will fail miserably?

The Dolphins have made it pretty clear that they have no interest in Matt Ryan with the #1 pick. However, there are plenty of reports showing their interest in Brohm and Flacco. Presumably they are considering picking one of these players with the first pick in the second round, however I have this nagging feeling that all 3 will be taken by the time they are picking.

Between the Falcons, Chiefs, and the Ravens, it is practically guaranteed that somebody will end up taking Matt Ryan.

Next we have a bunch of teams that don't necessarily NEED a QB but could certainly take one if they really love a guy (most likely this guy would be Brohm IMO).

Carolina (if they are worried about Delhomme's long term future)
Chicago
Detroit
Minnesota
Tampa Bay
San Francisco
Green Bay

I'm not saying that the chances of any particular one of these teams picking a QB is high, however the combined chance that one of these teams takes a QB is pretty high.

And Lastly, whoever doesn't draft a first round QB out of ATL KC and BAL could easily trade up into the late 1st round to leapfrog Miami and pick their guy.

I think Miami gets the 3rd QB at best and quite possibly the 4th QB if they wait until the second round. Historically QB is a popular position and I don't see any reason why that would change this year.

I'm really hoping that years down the road the Dolphins are smacking themselves on the head for passing on Matt Ryan.

There is an interesting but a bit crazy discussion about the possibility for the Pats to trade up to #1 to get Dorsey... If BB said there is no clear cut #1, it should be true, no trade up like that. Maybe a trade-up to get the the last tier A player.

This one who turned rapidly about trading up by the Pats and debate on Pats drafting Dorsey http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21095

Another, maybe less interesting from a strictly Pats POV, but interesting for the top 10 shaping up: a NO possibility to trade with Miami: http://www.nfldraftcountdown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21124

What makes you believe that the Chiefs are in the mix for a QB this year? They have Brody Croyle who they really like and who is Herm's pick for the QB position.

How is it that you believe that Chicago doesn't NEED a QB?

How is it that you believe that Minnesota wants one when they have Jackson, who they really like and who came on really well last year.

San Fran has Alex Smith and also have Sean King. They are in a QB battle there and they aren't going to add a 3rd to the mix.

Green Bay has Aaron Rogers who they spent a 1st round pick on and the ONLY reason they haven't started him more is because they felt obligated to Brett Favre.

I do believe that Atlanta has the fire power to move up into the end of the second to draft a QB if they want since they have 3 2nd round picks.

Finally, how do you know that Miami hasn't talked with Ryan about a contract? Because it hasn't been blasted all over the news? At this time of year, if its in the news, more than likely its a smoke screen.

Why don't we let them exercise their (Miami's) draft strategy before we critique it? Parcel's pre-draft strategy has always included disinformation, so I take what "news" is coming out of Miami with a grain of salt.

Chiefs: because they spent a lot of time scouting guys like Ryan and because there are question marks surrounding Croyle.

Bears: Because they've got enough other things going for them that Grossman doesn't necessarily doom them to failure. Don't get me wrong I think they seriously consider drafting a QB otherwise I wouldn't have listed them.

Vikes: This was one of the bigger stretches in that group. While I don't think they draft a QB there are plenty of people who aren't sold on Jackson.

Niners: I don't know what I was thinking. Alex Smith and Sean King are the ACME of quarterbacking. *rolls eyes*

Green Bay: who knows, they may think Rodgers sucks or they may just want more competition. Its not like drafting a QB #30 puts them in salary cap hell. Another one of the bigger stretches in that second group.

Miami: Good point, they may actually want Ryan. I guess I'm just assuming nobody likes a guy enough to trade up to the 1 spot so the smokescreens don't exactly seem necessary. You are right though, if they did want Ryan and feel that someone else likes Jake Long enough to trade up then keeping Ryan talks on the DL would make sense. The thing is, they have no guarantee Ryan will be available if they trade down more than 1 pick since Atlanta is a possible suitor so I remain skeptical of the smokescreen theory.

where's the fun in that :p

Miami will take Gholston with the first overall pick. Write it down. They have been trying to get off of 1 for a month. They started lowball negotiations with Jake L. a week ago. Long and Gholston have the same agent first you be the carrot with long and then you offer a similar deal to a player whom is forecasted as a 5 to 7th pick. He'll jump at the cash and be easier to wrap up pre draft, he gets more money yet the dolphins pay less money for the first overall pick in a draft that has no clear cut number 1.

A Bill Parcells run team usually drafts well, and he's actually selected some very good players over the years. So, I can't see how anyone thinks his '08 draft strategy will be a failure.

The Niners might draft a QB later on but there is no chance in hell they use a first round pick on one this year. Nolan barely survived last year and they have to show significant improvement this year for him to save his job. They need an impact player. And it's Sean Hill.

Having the first pick in the draft Miami is trying to sign MULTIPLE players to contracts prior to the draft. Of course the contract says "if miami takes you in the first round", a smart idea. If they think they want one of 4 guys, they can get them ALL under contracts they like.....and then just PASS on pick 1-2-3 til they get to the guy. This is a way to save $$ and STILL get one of the top picks. Of course they could try and trade down to 3-4 too, but those teams dont want to give up BOTH $$ and an extra pick. To "give away" the first pick(trading 1 for say 4 and a 2nd rd pick)would be making a mockery of the system.....passing on the pick would only indicate the parity of players at the top of the draft.

No offense, JB, but this particular conspiracy theory really, really makes no sense. It's wildly illegal under the CBA, and even if it weren't...if the contract terms were already agreed on, why would pass on the player you want? You'd be risking somebody else would take him without saving yourself a penny! You'd just end up with the same contract in a slot with a lower rookie cap, making it harder to sign the rest of your draftees.

Oakland paid a bloody expensive price for passing on Lienhart, especially since Huff hasn't panned out as planned. Russell bled them on the contract last season.

Any time you have a chance to take a franchise QB, you have to do it.

I'm not saying Ryan is a franchise QB or that he is better than Beck, but he is better than Flacco or Brohm or Woodson.

You and I are basically on the same wavelength Ochmed. Although I think he IS a franchise QB and he is going to be a Top 10 QB in the league within 5 years. I didn't bring that up because I'm sure most people disagree with me there.
