As much as I dislike the guy, sucks to hear the cancer is back. When I first read it, I thought it was "carma" due to the fact he has been such a media whore pitching his book about suriving cancer.

WASHINGTON (April 15) - Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter's cancer has returned. The five-term Republican said in a statement released by his office Tuesday that he was diagnosed with an early recurrence of Hodgkin's disease, which is a cancer of the lymph system.

Specter, 78, underwent treatment for the same type of cancer in 2005 and was later given a clean bill of health. The statement said that the cancer was revealed in a medical scan but that he has no symptoms.

"I was surprised by the PET scan findings because I have been feeling so good," Specter said in the statement. "I consider this just another bump on the road to a successful recovery from Hodgkin's, from which I've been symptom free for three years."

In his recent book, "Never Give In: Battling Cancer in the Senate," Specter credited hard work with getting him through the cancer treatments.

"An illness like Hodgkin's serves as a reminder that we have a limited time — and how our time can end when we least expect it," Specter wrote. "Moreover, the event of death could never eclipse what is most important, which is how we spend the time we have."

The statement released by his office said tests showed cancer in lymph nodes in his chest. A follow-up biopsy of one of the chest lymph nodes was positive for recurrence.

Specter's oncologist, John H. Glick of the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania, said in the statement released by the senator's office that Specter has an excellent chance of fighting the disease. The early diagnosis of his recurrent Hodgkin's disease has a five-year survival rate of 60 percent, the doctor said.

Specter, Pennsylvania's longest-serving senator, said he would continue his normal duties — just as he did three years ago. He's already announced he will run for re-election in 2010, and he said the cancer won't stop him from that.

The senator was bald from his cancer treatments as he was playing a very public role chairing the committee that confirmed John Roberts as chief justice of the United States. During the long hearings, he drank Gatorade and frequently wiped his face with tissue. At the time, he underwent six months of chemotherapy.

Specter has long been an advocate of using federal dollars for cancer research and embryonic stem cell research. While bald, he offered himself up at a Capitol Hill news conference as someone who could benefit from stem cell research.

"I've got a new hairdo, which you can all observe, and that is indicative of a problem which may well be helped by stem cell research if it were to go forward," Specter said at the time.

The lymphoma recurrence was described as less advanced, and the statement said he will undergo three months of chemotherapy.

Specter had successful surgery for a brain tumor in 1993. It recurred three years later but was successfully treated. In 1998, he underwent bypass surgery and later suffered cardiac arrest.

The man is scum, but dont want to see anyone battle cancer, its a horrible disease, and its unfortuniate that they cant find a cure yet for it....

I certainly hope the man nothing but the best while he recovers. Beyond that, he's been no good to our team whatsoever, and dont want to be disingenuous about that for even a second.

I wish him and his family the best. As someone who has a family member dealing with Hodgkin's Lymphoma it is a very difficult and emotionally draining battle.

There was another thread about this and it had to be deleted. Lets hope this one doesn't go off in that direction.

I hope that his can get good treatment for this. I also hope that that he will drop his silly game of "spygate" and put all of his efforts in getting well and his job as a US Senator, whatever that might be.

I hope he lives a long life...and every year there is a Patriots SB victory for him. "Win this one for Arlen!" :rocker:

Since it's already had a thread locked maybe it would be a good idea to either preemptively lock this (or merge it into the locked one) or move it off the main board since it's OT and not remotely football or Patriots related.

I hope Senator Specter lives a long and healthy life, endlessly plagued by the Pats winning superbowls.

this may be really bad, but its a word ppl used a LOT after the sb....agaisnt us

its KARMA

The man has cancer and deserves our empathy and best wishes for comfort and recovery, no matter how much he has used his vengeful and vitriolic campaign against the team we love for self-promotion and the corrupt advancement of the interests of Comcast and other large contributors.

In short, fellow posters and fans, we need to be bigger and more decent than Senator Specter.

Sue me if I don't strike up the violins. The man's 80 years old has lived a life of wealth and power. I'll save my compassion for the truly needy. Spector has his own family to comfort him.

I'm scheduled to attend a meeting next week where Sen. Spector is/was scheduled to be the speaker and take Q&A afterwards. I was going to start a thread entitled, " If you could ask Sen. Spector one question, what would it be?" but considering the other events going on in his life, I doubt he'll be speaking. It would also be in bad taste to aggressively question him, especially until a certain Hawaiian golf pro is exposed to have nothing.

I know I'm going to hell but I hope the corrupt :explative dies a horrible agonizing death.

How ironic that you use "54" in your name. A player who battled back from a stroke to play pro football again. I'm betting that there is some deranged fan from another city who wishes ill on #54. Maybe you should give him a call and talk shop.

It's not about his picking on the Patriots for me, it's about his continual, IMO, abuse of power.

Whatever happens to him - I don't care I just want him out of the Senate ASAP.

I'll say the same thing, but I'll turn it on you. How dare you wish cancer on someone you little piece of garbage. Karma is going to bite you in the ass big time for that one. You're either 15 years old or you're completely ******ed. Either way, scum like you should not be alive to share air with the rest of the world. You're a complete waste.

I wish I wasn't at work so I could be more "colorful" with you, but I think you get the point.
