Michael Holley (...who has connections) just said on his radio show that the Patriots LOVE Sedrick Ellis and Glenn Dorsey, and view them as "special" players.

He also said that at this point, they don't have a corner in their top 10.

Michael Holley believes Patriots will draft Ellis or Dorsey

per eei.

He said he has his people who said they are very very high on Ellis and would select him at 7 if he is there or would select Dorsey if he is still there as well.

We all know Holley has very good sources within the organization and if this is true then this is quite a surprise to most of us they are targeting DT's.

I love Dorsey but am not completely sold on Ellis (not because I have a bad opinion on him, more that I've just never really seen too much of the guy). I can't see why we'd take Dorsey since we still have Seymour and need more of a linebacker. So, out of the two, we're more likely to take Ellis.

Weird i just posted the same thing the exact time you did.

Re: Michael Holley believes Patriots will draft Ellis or Dorsey

This was on Pro Football Weekly's site this weekend:

Patriots zeroing in on DT Ellis

With one of the most loaded defensive lines in the NFL, it would seem odd for the Patriots to pick up yet another defensive lineman with the seventh pick in the draft. But a source close to the club said the Pats are taking a hard look at USC DT Sedrick Ellis. Ellis has been one of the fastest-rising prospects since the end of the season — a strong, quick player who could conceivably man any of the three down lineman positions in the 3-4 defense. One of the biggest reasons for the interest is the belief that the personnel on the now-dominant line will be shifting in two years. The contracts of both DE Richard Seymour and NT Vince Wilfork are up after the 2009 season, and it’s likely the Pats won’t be able to re-sign both. Seymour, specifically, has reason to doubt his future with the team. Injuries have taken a toll on him, and the Pats will be reluctant to spend top dollar on a guy with injury baggage. Wilfork, perhaps the most talented nose tackle in the game today who’s only now entering the prime of his career, is critical to the Pats' future, but will require a megadeal to keep around. The situation couldn’t be more different than the situation with DLE Ty Warren, whose extension a season ago was considered team-friendly. Ellis is by no means a lock to be around by the seventh pick as Oakland at No. 4 and Kansas City at No. 5 are interested in him, but if he is around and the Pats are unable to trade down, look for him to be the pick.

I know they are probably going to have to prepare to potentially lose either Wilfork or Seymour in two years, but I am a little concerned about drafting a back up with the seventh overall pick.

You gotta think that if the Pats do draft Ellis or Dorsey with the seventh pick, Jarvis Green will be traded away by the end of the draft weekend. He does have some trade value and keeping him and Ellis or Dorsey on the roster is far too much money tied up in the d-line for back ups.

Re: Michael Holley believes Patriots will draft Ellis or Dorsey

There are only so many guys on the planet that are as big as our DL guys, or ellis/ dorsey, and are as athletically gifted. They're safer picks. Could be a smoke screen though.

Re: Holley: Pats LOVE Ellis and Dorsey

Smokescreen. If S.Ellis is on board at 7. I think someone will trade up to get him.
If we ran a 4-3. I'd be ok with it. But, we run a 3-4. We have the best NG in football. Ellis can't play end in a 3-4. Square peg. Round hole. I'd be shocked if we took him.

omg Why Is This Not In The Draft Forum Wtf

Let the games continue, smoke screen? Sure, why not.....could force a trade or a team above to thake them allowing a LB to slide, or, Ellis is really, really good and could be ours!!!

I love draft day!!

Re: Holley: Pats LOVE Ellis and Dorsey

I really like Ellis, and would have no problem if the Pats pick him. OTOH Dorsey has some red flags and I'd just as soon pass.

Where would we play him?

Re: Michael Holley believes Patriots will draft Ellis or Dorsey

If they did draft one of those guys, we will see more 4-3 than 3-4. You just can't take a player that high and then use him as a back up or even part of a rotation.

I will be surprisesd if they do that but they really know what they are doing and I don't.

Re: Michael Holley believes Patriots will draft Ellis or Dorsey

I know they are probably going to have to prepare to potentially lose either Wilfork or Seymour in two years, but I am a little concerned about drafting a back up with the seventh overall pick.

But there are few things to consider here:

1) There's no guarantee that any rookie will be able to step in and contribute right away. This would give Ellis / Dorsey a couple years to learn the system and get some experience before needing to become the starter on a team that will still be expected to compete for championships.

2) BB believes in building form the trenches out, so if he has a chance to grab what he believe is a potential franchise D-Lineman for the next 8-10 years I think he's going to do it, and I wouldn't have a big issue with it.

3) Richard Seymour, who was the best player on our championship defenses, was selected 6th and sparked a string of dominant defenses. Perhaps BB is wondering if he can pull that off again with a high level pick, and (rightfully) doesn't believe he'll get another chance in the top 10.

Re: Holley: Pats LOVE Ellis and Dorsey

Bill has thrown some exotic fronts out there before 2-4-5, 0-6-5, who says we don't mess everyone up and go 4-3-4 at times with Dorsey or Ellis? I know everyone will say "Never happen", but that is what makes Belichick great, he is thinking one step beyond "Never Happen".

That 4th man can add more pressure on the QB give Seymour Warren and Wilfork less double teams as well.

Re: Michael Holley believes Patriots will draft Ellis or Dorsey

Well, if we lose Wilfork or Seymour and Dorsey is going to get time to learn this system... my God, watch out.

Re: Michael Holley believes Patriots will draft Ellis or Dorsey

I think we've learned not to doubt BB's judgment when it comes to D-linemen. If this report is true, we should welcome the addition of another 300 lb beast. Great 300 lb players usually have more impact on games than great little people, other than Qbs, damn the stats. It's physics.

Why do you say Ellis can't play end? Because he is a DT? Ty Warren played DT at Texas A&M, didn't he? I'd say he can play DE. What position did Seymour play in Georgia? Was he a DT or DE there?

This brings to mind something I've been thinking about for a while. I've read that the 3-4 evolved from the old 5-2 defense. How cool would it be to see BB throw out a 5-2 lineup (or hybrid 5-1 nickel) for a few plays? Something like:

Hobbs-Sanders-Meriweather-Bryant

Harrison-Thomas

Green-Seymour-Wilfork-Warren-Vrabel

No way does that team get run on, and should be able to bring a lot of pressure on the QB. I wouldn't use it against a great QB & receivers though.

Re: Michael Holley believes Patriots will draft Ellis or Dorsey

maybe it is a smokescreen...think about it....how many teams would love either dorsey or ellis? as the only worthy dt's in this draft?
