Finally someone saw that Gholston isn't that great of a player, more of a combine guy.

I always thought the patriots would struggle selecting him at #7 because he really isn't worth the #7 pick. I was thinking before the combine they could trade down around 15 or lower and get him if they wanted.

But, I would still like to see him be a patriot.

GHOLSTON THIS YEAR’S MAMULA?
Posted by Mike Florio on April 11, 2008, 3:09 p.m.

There’s no denying the impressive physique and workout numbers that have been posted by Ohio State defensive end/linebacker Vernon Gholston. But some league insiders are concerned that Gholston might be this year’s Mike Mamula.

Mamula, you might remember, was a defensive end who rocketed up the draft board based on incredible pre-draft numbers. The Boston College product made it all the way to No. 7 in 1995, jumping past guys like Joey Galloway and Warren Sapp and Hugh Douglas and Ty Law. But Mamula was a bust as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles, and he has long since been out of the league.

As to Gholston, a league source tells us Gholston simply isn’t memorable when watching game film. As the thinking goes, if he were a dominant player at the college level, he would be showing up in the thick of things on a continuous basis. Per the source, he simply doesn’t.

We’ve recently heard that the Raiders could be targeting Gholston with the No. 4 overall selection. But plenty of league insiders don’t see him being a top-five selection.

That thought has crossed my mind. Form what i've read Gholstons dessapeared at times during games,is muscle bound and is a work out warrior.

Call me a cynic. My assumption at this time of the year is that anyone from any team talking on or off the record about any particular player has ulterior motives.

Anyone who says something good is likely trying to preserve an alterative player for themselves or screw a compeitor.

Anyone saying something bad may well be hoping to see that person slid.

So I tend to take these types of report with a shaker full of salt.

So we should sign Mamula to a 1 year vet. minimum contract? ;)

But what is said about him is totally the truth. Prior to the combine many mocks had him going late 20's.

If you watch the LSU-OSU game, he was basically held in check and made very few plays, despite playing against some less than spectacular young LSU OT's.

But keep in mind, he would be an OLB in our 3-4 system as opposed to a 4-3 DE.

I'm not saying Gholston is going to be a super-player. But, you can't compare his college career to Mamula's. Gholston was an outstanding player the last 2 years. Good enough to be considered a solid first round pick. Combine and workouts have just moved him. Mamula was nowhere near the college player Gholston is. A very poor comparision IMO.

I dont think the Pats will draft Gholston, not over some of the other players in this draft. He is simply not a great football player, and he would be an awkward fit at olb in the 3-4, hes a undersized 4-3 DE.

Mocks don't mean squat as most of the one pre-combine were also PRE-Bowl games.

Mamula wasn't even a 1st round pick prior to the combine.

Gholston has been projected as a 1st round pick for at least the last 2 years.

Just because he's in the top 10, now, doesn't make him this year's Mike Mamula. That just dumb.

How is he an awkward fit at the 3-4 OLB? 6'3 and 266? That's damn near the size that Colvin was playing at.

How is he not a great football player?

22.5 Sacks and plus 30 TFLs, in 34 games? That's not a good great football player?

Merriman had 8 sacks his final year in college. That's right, 8. Mario Williams dogged it most of his final year, and had many of his best games against terrible competition. There are very few perfect prospects. Gholston had good college production which would have been awesome for anybody but himself. But he's so gifted physically that people are looking for more. He had 11.5 sacks over his final 5 games, against Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan and LSU. He's only a junior. His physical potential is limitless. Give him to BB and let him go to work.

because he is awkward in coverage, we arent gunna line him up at end or just pass rush him at olb every down, hes going to have to play off the line and in space. He looks mediocre in that area.

I think it is pretty obvious that with Merriman's weight gain after college that he was juicing.

Mamula might not have had a Hall of Fame NFL career, but it's not as if he was a complete stiff. He survived 5 seasons in the NFL and averaged more than 6 sacks per season. His problem was that he was out of position. The Eagles had him as a defensive lineman in a 4-3 system when he needed to be a linebacker in a 3-4 due to his size (245-252 lbs).

Sure Briz. And DRC, who didn't even do great against lesser competition, is the next Deion Sanders. At least, that's what you'd have us believe.

P.S. Why wouldn't the Pats have him just Pass Rush from the OLB spot? That's what they did for much of Colvin's career here.

That is just foolish. The guy was dominating in college. He did have an unmemorable championship game, but that was pretty much the entire team. The guy was a beast on the field. Watching the games you would usually lose track of anything being done by the defensives star of Laurinaitis and just get drawn to how much havoc Gholoston was reaping in the back field.

A much more apt Mamula is Cromartie. A guy with great numbers, one good senior bowl and pretty much nothing else.

he did fine against lesser competition, he had 6 INTs and then 2 the next year only cause teams didnt throw his way. How many picks did McKelvin have? Has only had 1 in two seasons, he has no ball skills. Cro is a insane athlete with elite ball skills hes not some workout wonder like Gholston. Colvin hasnt just passed rush his whole time here he is always in coverage.

I actually see much more upside to Gholston then someone like C. Long. Gholston is far closer to the beginning of his learning curve than the over-achieving Long. I think in a BB learning system , someone like Gholston, who showed flashes of DOMINANCE and brilliance could become a total stud.

I see less of that with long. Who is a solid, high motor guy, but with less raw ability.

Why are you labeling Chris Long an "overachiever"? He's blesses with good size, strength, athletic ability, and bloodlines. Go back and watch him run through agility drills at the Combine. He was very impressive, and seemed a lot more fluid than Gholston.

If people want to talk down Chris Long, I'm fine with that. It's all part of the the master plan!

He's dropping, and let's hope it continues!

PS. That Chris Long is terrible. Daddy's little boy. Thinks he deserves millions because he's the son of a HOFer. All maxed out. Scheme dependent. Huge bust potential.
