As expected, the Miami Dolphins are talking to the agents for multiple players regarding the No. 1 overall selection in the draft.

On Wednesday, it was reported by the Miami Herald that the Fins are talking with Tom Condon of CAA regarding Michigan tackle Jake Long. Now, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that the team is talking to another CAA agent (presumably Ben Dogra) regarding Ohio State linebacker/defensive end Vernon Gholston.

Other players who might be approached by the Dolphins include Virginia defensive end Chris Long, LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, and Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan.

As we’ve previously explained, the team’s apparent objective is to play one player against the other, in the hopes of doing the best possible deal. And every player who has a chance at being the No. 1 overall pick must when assessing the offer attempt to predict where he’ll go if he’s not the top pick — and whether he’ll be paid as much or more at a lower slot than what the Dolphins are offering.

For players represented by the same agent (like Jake Long and Ryan) or the same firm (like Jake Long, Ryan, and Gholston), there’s a potential conflict of interest, which the NFLPA’s agent regulations have yet to address. For every agent who fears being hammered in the industry for doing a “bad deal” at No. 1, there’s an even bigger conflict of interest, which the NFLPA’s regs likewise don’t address. Because while it might be in the player’s best interests to take what he can get and be the first overall pick, it’s clearly not in the interests of the agent to be associated with a deal that doesn’t reflect a significant increase in the total package and guaranteed money paid last year to Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

There is a 0% chance he goes #1. They like him a lot, they'd never take him at number 1. It's possible he could go to the Rams at 2, but more then likely they'll take Glenn Dorsey.

Probably so, but ever since Houston convinced the world that they choice Mario Williams in significant part because he was flexible in negotiations, this ploy should be extremely effective. The gap in money between #1 and everybody else has been so huge in recent years, it could behoove a Gholston to be extremely accommodating in contract terms, hoping that he'd look attractive at, say, a 10% discount over Chris Long. If the Parcells can conceal his real intentions so that the real target caves this way, that's a big win.

Casserly was known to be leaving (resigned/fired, who knows) before that draft. He left very soon after it and if you poke around on Google you'll find much talk about him going to leave after the draft.

2006 should serve as some good humble pie for all the draft "experts." If you look at the top 10 now, the most viciously maligned picks -- Williams and Whitner -- now look the best, while a lot of the "sure things" (Ferguson, Huff) have faltered and the "steals" (Bush, Leinart) don't look like such bargains after all.

Good point. Hawk has been ordinary. Sims has been good, but he's surrounded by awful talent and coaching. I kind of disagree with the idea Whitner was an inspired pick. Whitner has started since day one, and there is value in that. But he has not been an impact player. He has been torched in coverage and vs the run. For example, vs the Giants he was embarrassed by Bradshaw and the Jacobs and looked very slow. Maybe he has been playing injured. I think that pick has been overrated by people and thus far a mistake. I guess you can say, at least he hasn't been a bust. Maybe he'll blossom next season.

I still hold out hope for Huff, and believe he is suffering from Oakland syndrome. Who knows if he will ever recover.

I agree that this is nothing more than a negotiating ploy to get the price down on the guy the Dolphins REALLY want. If they have 2 guys ranked equally, well maybe the price might be a factor then. The conflict of interests thing is certainly a valid point. Not sure how the Sports Agent companies deal with it, but they most likely have a procedure in place to minimize it.
