Just got my PFW draft preview book in the mail

Interesting stuff. Nawrocki is very high on B. Albert and says his most natural position may be LT. Albert is the #14 overall prospect. He has Matt Ryan as the #1 overall prospect. He has Gholston ranked ahead of Long. Groves is #56, behind Avril at #46. He stacks Cason at #83.

Yeah, but it's outdated. They put it together in mid March. They had the Pats taking McFadden, which doesn't make much sense.

It's a little weird with C. Long dropping to us and KC taking McFadden but if all mocks were the same . . . what would be the point ?

I picked up Sporting News the other day, man is that mock peculiar. Gholston going in the SECOND ROUND. Groves going to the Jets at 6. Their war room scouts have some very different rankings. They have J. Long listed with a second round grading, Gholston likewise. There were some other shockers, as well.

Sporting News is always weird - remember their mocks, etc, are based solely on their rankings NOT what they think will happen. It's a good magazine for a contrarian opinion but if anyone buys that as their sole reference point, they'll have a very, very strange perspective on the draft.

It was a very strange perspective...which maybe its good to get a different perspective...but Gholston in the 2nd round? Now that's contrarian.

That's a bad mock draft. There is no way KC takes Darren McFadden, and there is no way the Jets would take Jonathan Stewart at #6. I wish the draft would fall this way, but it would never happen. I too would love to see Chris Long at #7.

Yeah, I have trouble believing Mangini would go for the FAIL by taking Stewart over Son of Howie. But if Long were still available at 4, I could see the Pats doing their best to try and land him.

According to PFW, Jonathan Goff is a mid/late 6th-round talent. Why are they so down on him?

Don't have the book with me but it says he plays slowly both in terms of a lack of instincts and not taking his timed speed to the field. I think they use the word "lumbers" when referring to his pass coverage IIRC.

Here's the quote: "Produced the best all-around numbers of any inside backer at the combine but lumbers when he runs and is overwhelmed in the open field. He does not play to workout numbers nor does he have the instincts and thump required in a MLB. Might fit best as a "Sam" LB and contributor on special teams."

Nawrocki usually puts more emphasis on game tape than raw athleticism. That's all fine and noble, but sometimes it makes him overvalue players like Curtis Lofton and undervalue others like Goff. Goff has great potential. It may take him a few years to "get it", but he will. In the 3-4 he won't be exposed in the open field, if that really is an issue for him. But right now he is not seen as a good fit for 4-3 teams, who seem to be undervaluing him as a result.

1) I don't see Lofton as late 1st-round talent, though PFW (#25) and Frank Coyle of Draft Insiders (#28) do. NFLDraftCountdown has him at #37.

2) I also like Goff's upside. He is too smart, too athletic and too tough not to eventually get it, sooner than later. Plus, he's local, a Patriots fan and well-grounded.

If the FO plays this draft correctly, it can leave NYC with potential starters at OLB, CB and RS in the first 3 rounds; and future starters at ILB, OG and SS in the last 4 rounds. DL, TE and WR should only be acquired as UDFAs, not as draft choices.

Yeah, I got Sporting News b/c I had read through the entire Lindy's and wanted another perspective. See my post above for some of their peculiar rankings. Gholston as the 5th best at his position and 2nd round talent?? Yikes. It was another perspective, thats for damn sure.

yeah it's pure garbage and they shouldn't be allowed to make these books.

I've never read a draft guide that was accurate.

The best book to buy for analysis is Mel Kiper's blue book. The mock draft isn't that good, but for detail on players it's the best.
