What a disingenuous load of bs from the saintliest HC in the league...

The consolation is the Football God doesn't but it either, which is why the strategy didn't have the desired result, again. Unfortunately this mediot didn't take advantage of his opportunity to ask Tony whether he and Jeff pre-agreed not to contest this game to it's finish...

Colts coach concedes victory wasn't priority
Browns fans really shouldn't complain

PALM BEACH, FLA.: Tony Dungy's Q rating among Browns fans is not very high.

It might even be subterranean.

''I understand it totally,'' Dungy said Monday at the annual NFL's spring meetings. ''I wish in my heart it would have been different.''

Get out the violins...

Monday, he explained his thinking and, in doing so, conceded that winning was not his prime concern. Instead it was making sure his team was rested and healthy for the playoffs because the Colts already had clinched.

''Usually you go out there and your whole focus is on winning the game,'' he said. ''You get to the end of the year, and you've got situations where it's now getting ready for the next week. That game isn't the most important thing.''

the next week was your bye week, Tony

Dungy said he was well aware of the implications to the Browns.

:D

''As much as you'd like to protect the integrity of the game, as much as you'd like to say this would be better for the league if we did this, it's not better for us,'' he said.

situational ethics, the name of the game in the NFL...

It's an odd thing to hear a coach concede that winning wasn't the priority — and that the approach affected the ''integrity of the game.''

The league has proposed seeding playoff teams to make late-season games more meaningful. Sentiment seems to be against the proposal, but Dungy is a supporter.

disingenuous phony that he is

Dungy did say, though, that the Colts played to win against the Titans.

''We just didn't play all our guys,'' he said.

This might seem to raise a contradiction. How, for instance, can a team play ''to win'' if it does not play its best players?

Or how can a team play to win when they play Jim Sorgi for three and a half quarters in spite of a bye?

Asked if there was a contradiction, Dungy said: ''Not necessarily.''

Sounds like an alternate interpretation to me...

''We were trying to win the Super Bowl,'' he said. ''You can't take that away from our team.''

Oh, yes you can Tony...:D

Oh, yes you can Tony...

I just have one question and I am not flaming you in anyway. Why are people still making a big deal out of this when other teams and coaches do this ever single year? Including the Pats against the Dolphins a few years ago, this is nothing new, it happens every year, The Jags did it this year and a few other teams but people only want to bring up the Colts. The Browns situation is totally not the Colts problem. Now if the Colts had played there starters and Manning suffered a season ending injury then everybody would be calling Dungy and the Colts the dumbest team in the league for playing starters. Just curious, not looking for a flame war or anything.

I for one wish we would have played our starters at least a little more to try and win the game.

lets see if PFT picks this up and calls him out...

Tony Dungy is a good person (typed with as much sarcasm as humanly possible)

People are making an issue of it because of the word that came out that Dungy and Fisher agreed on the outcome of the game PRIOR to the game occuring. So that the Titans could make the play-offs and keep the Browns out.

Had Dungy played his normal starters for much of the game and pulled them in the 4th, that would have been a different story. But, the fact is that he threw the game. He wasn't trying to win.

There was just speculation about an agreement, and nothing more, The only thing the Colts did was not call a timeout at the end of the game and try and let Sorgi drive the colts down the field with less then a min left in the game when for the entire game he was lucky to get 5 yards. I guess if Dungy called that one timeout then nobody would still be talking about it.

I just can't see any coach in the NFL having any kind of agreement to tank a game, not Dungy or anybody, or course being a Colts fan thats to be expected.

and for the record of course Im not a Pats fan and I am not buying into this spygate crap either (I don't think the Pats did anything illegal) it would be nice for that to come to a close once and for all..

I think throwing games casts a significantly higher shadow on the integrity of the league than filming from an unnacceptable spot. Too bad we have a commissioner that doesn't give a rat's butt about anything other punishing the Pats.

It's a big deal because sanctimonious Tony D has been annointed as 'Mr Integrity' by himself and the mediots. Given this exaulted position, the defense of 'all the other teams do it too' is not available.

Based upon time out calls etc. in that game and the value to the Tits of keeping the Browns outa the playoffs, serious questions about a pre-game agreement are germain. Too bad the media considers Saint Dungy out of bounds for such questions. It IS a big deal for teams to collude such that another team's playoff appearance is affected.

There was actually a playoff berth at stake for two teams, as opposed to most rest scenarios including when we rested players vs. Miami because WE DID NOT have a bye. There was an outside chance had we won that a seeding change would have ensued, but that was not at our discretion since it would have required another team who played later to lose and they did not. Here the implications were clear, and there were underlying concerns regarding how relationships (between Dungy and competition committee member Fisher) and statements (the Tennessee backup QB stating they knew TO's would not be called and Dungy proclaiming three playoff teams emerging from the AFCS was somehow significant IHO) created the perception of impropriety due to potential collusion regarding the outcome.

It's also an issue for Pat's fans because if some mediot asked BB to comment on the situation he would decline and say it's a league matter or none of his business - while Dungy has never met another teams/coaches situation he is unwilling to comment on...

The Pats did the same exact same thing a few years ago against the Dolphins, I don't remember the teams involved but losing that game let the Pats play a team that BB wanted to play over the other. I didn't care and still don't, the Pats earned that right by being in that position, just like the Colts earned the right to rest players. I can't say for 100% there was or wasn't an agreement, but I seriously doubt it. But I am sure you would expect no less from a Colts fan. Again I am not trying to start crap on here, just having a civil discussion about the matter...off seasons are just way too long :eat3:

I didn't realize the Pats didn't have the bye week when you played Miami, that does make a big difference. I wish Dungy would play it straight up for 16 games, enough of this resting starters crap, I don't like it and never will, but if Manning was to get hurt in a meaningless game then I might learn to like it though..:D

edit to add: Do other teams like the Colts really owe it to other teams to play with all starters in a meaningless game and risk injury to help the other teams into the playoffs? I think the Browns should have just taken care of business and then they wouldn't have had to worry about what we did...but thats just my biased opinion of course.

For the same reason NE gets repeatedly puked on for what the uninformed classify as "cheating by stealing signals and using them in 2nd half of games" when the truth is they only violated arule about where taping can occur.

How does it feel that the "uninformed" feel your team laid down in a very unsportsmanship like way??

Why do the Colts need to rest their players for 2 weeks? The Colts had a bye week already.

The problem is that it wasn't a meaningless game. The fate of two teams play-offs chances hinged on it.

The issue has nothing to do with whether the Browns should have taken care of business and it implies that you are endorsing the Colts throwing the game so that the Titans can win. That is the whole crux of the situation.

It does suck, and I for one think spygate has been way blown out of proportion. I just wish they would talk to this walsh idiot and get it over with and find out that he don't know anything. I have a feeling a tape might be in Walsh's possesion but what is that going to prove? Walsh could have done that on his own free will, and I bet BB has never seen it. I guess you can call me one of the few Colts fans that actually believes the Pats are innocent of this.

They don't need to rest the starters for two weeks, thats the dumbest thing ever and he has done it twice now, I guess he didn't learn in 2005 when we lost to Pittsburgh at home after having one of our best seasons ever. Don't get me wrong I like Dungy but I was kind of hoping that he wouldn't come back this year, I think he is a great regular season coach, except toward the end of the season and the playoffs.

Much appreciated - I also feel TD did what he thought best for the interst of the Colts.

Yeah it sucked for the Browns, but they need to takr care of their own business during the season.

No, it's not the same thing, because the playoffs were set at that point. That wasn't the case here.

New England's situation in 2005 was completely different.

The Pats had already clinched the division and were locked into playing a game the next week, as the 3 or the 4 seed. Miami was 8-7 and had no chance of making the playoffs going into that game, as the wild card teams had won 11 and 12 games that season.

The Pats were playing for their own seeding and nothing else.

The Colts/Titans game determined who made the playoffs and who did not. And as DaBruinz pointed out, Kerry Collins came out and said that the two coaches had an agreement prior to the game.

The Pats did the same exact same thing a few years ago against the Dolphins...

I guess you missed the entire point of my post (1) regarding the claiming of high moral ground by St D and his myrmidions and the (2) significance of the game regarding teams in/not in the playoffs.
