"The NFL just announced that the rule proposal to allow a defensive player to wear a communication device in his helmet has been passed by owners.

The vote was 25-7. A total of 24 votes were needed to pass the proposal.

The Patriots were one club that helped sway the vote. The team voted against a similar proposal last year, but voted for it this year.

The proposal last year garenered 22 votes."

Doesnt specify how many players would be allowed to be equiped with this technology.

interesting... very recently BB has said he did not want this...now they pretty much assist it to pass

are they trying to help out their image? b/c if so, i dont care, im their fan, and their imagine is fine with me, other teams' fans wont like the pats either way......

btw, if the pats are specified on how they voted, i sure do wish to know which 7 teams did NOT vote for it...otherwise it is very unfair

IIRC, BB didn't want this simply because of the way it was being proposed. They wanted only one player in defense to have a helmet radio (since the QB was the only guy on O to have one). However, BB voted against it because he constantly rotates players in and out and there would be times where he wouldn't have his guy with the radio in his helmet on the field.

I have heard that one of the changes to this proposition was to allow two D players to have this radio communication in their helmets. Maybe that's what swayed him because I don't think he really cares about public perception.

They said this week that 2 players will have the headset. It's not perfect because even with 2 there is no guarantee that one will always be on the field, like the quarterback. I think last year they only wanted 1 player to have the headset.

My guess is the Pats will go about it the old-fashioned way and just use hand signals. IMO, you will handicap your team if you become too reliant on the helmet. And if you have guys shuffling in and out of the lineup all the time, like the Pats do, it will just cause more of a logistical headache.

You'll find yourself putting a guy on the field not because he is the right player for that play or formation, but simply because he has a wire helmet.

what's to stop teams from listening in on these communication devices?

They said this week that 2 players will have the headset. It's not perfect because even with 2 there is no guarantee that one will always be on the field, like the quarterback. I think last year they only wanted 1 player to have the headset.

Can anyone tell me what difference how many players with a headset in their helmet makes? I'm not trying to be a wiseguy but what's the difference between having only two guys with it and having every defensive player with it? I'm just asking because it seems to me it shouldn't matter.

Because usually there isn't one guy on defense who is on the field for every single play like the quarterback is. Having two guys would give you the opportunity to have the headset on the field at all times, like say on one of the lineman, and on that lineman's backup.

Being the BB homer that I am, I naturally assumed that BB voted it down last year, then spent the year having someone like Ernie identify ways to use the communication tool for some competetive advange.

And now that he's has his plan identified and ready to implement, he votes in favor of the change.

I understand that aspect of it. My question is why can't all the defensive players have it in their helmets? Is it because their expensive and the owners are too cheap? If every defensive player has it, would they even need to huddle up? Maybe I'm being obtuse.

I understand that aspect of it. My question is why can't all the defensive players have it in their helmets? Is it because their expensive and the owners are too cheap? If every defensive player has it, would they even need to huddle up? Maybe I'm being obtuse.

I'm not sure, there must be a reason why only the quarterback gets one and has to huddle up to tell everyone else. Maybe its just to cut down on confusion.

Maybe Specter should ask the Eagles why they are in favor of being able to steal signals

If only one player can be on the field with the device than why would you evan want a 2nd player to have it, those 2 players then could not be on the field at the sametime??????????

can they use more than one helmet? one helmet with it and one without???


what about when the coach to player communication breaks down? this is less of a problem on offense because they go at their own pace, the de has to be ready when the offense is. Lets say we are playing peyton and he is in his normal hurry up, by the time the coach knows that the headset didn't work on his first attempt to call the play peyton will be at the line already and there wont be time to hand signal it in. on offense you go when your ready if your not ready in time you get delay of game on defense if your not ready you are no calling a timeout or getting torched....doesn't seem fair (except that all teams have this issue)

that is interesting....also the packers, who apparently were robbed of their signals my the pats on multiple occasions....see no reason to fix the problem...hmmmmmmmmmmm

I read an article in the Boston Globe today saying that, after two failed attempts, defensive players will now be able to wear mics in their helmets. The vote was narrowly passed (25-7, needed 24 to pass). Its weird how i remember almost everything word for word...So yeah, two defensive players will have mics, and im pretty sure they have to be pointed out before the game. do you guys think this has something to do with the signal "stealing" of the patriots?

They have been talking about this for a while. Before Spygate.

And I don't think its a mic. Its a receiver - you can't talk back to the coach.

If they give it to Vrabel, he will need a different helmet to go out with Brady on offense.

So as i understand it, only one defensive player with a headset can be on the field at a time and you have to designate the two players with headsets before the game, right?

I presume that linebackers will be the primary guys wearing the headsets, so with the way Bill rotates linebackers and uses sub packages, what happens when neither guy is on the field or both of them are on the field?

Say for example that Bruschi and Thomas are the two guys with headsets. I can understand saying tough luck if you take both of them out, but what if both of them are in (the majority on the time)? Does one of them just have to put on a regular helmet? i can't see the Patriots giving a starter like Bruschi a headset and then a backup like Alexander or Woods a headset, seeing as a lot of the time Bruschi comes out on 3rd downs and the backup doesn't necessarily come in. Or do you just pick a guy like Rodney, Vrabel or Warren who plays most snaps and play the odds?

This rule seems like it could be the source of a lot of confusion (or maybe its just me missing something), since with the offensive system you always have a QB in, and you always only have one QB in, however defensive players rotate in and out based on formations and rest, so there's no guarantee one guy will be in while another is out or that either of them will be in.

Sorry if this is a stupid question or overly long and confusing.
