Bill Belichick And His Not-So-Archenemies

Awesome article......Michael Gee is a class act, a consummate professional all the way.

BB is what he is and that is not bad at all, by any stretch of the imagination (writers that do not know him seem to love to portray him as being anti press).

I would say Bill is anti-anyone who crossed him. He is not anit-press but he is not going to make their job easy for them because he feels it is important to guard certain things. If you than do something he doesn't like in an attempt to get the guarded info.....Watch out.

When I saw it written by Michael Gee, I thought it was going be an article about "I told you the Pats should have lost a game before the playoffs".

Gee is as clueless as ever. Sure, the blatant evidence in our faces of media hacks trying to destroy this man should be ignored. Nothing to see here, move along. I guess Gee never bumped into Borges during his time covering the team.

You either didn't read the article, or you missed this:

The friction, however, need not be personal. With the one obvious exception of Ron Borges, Belichick’s conflicts with New England reporters were just business as usual in football.

You either didn't read the article, or you missed this:

If the most powerful scribe in Boston has a personal vendetta against the coach, then the premise of Gee's article is nonsense. Throw in Shaughnessy's vendetta vs the Krafts, Man-hands MacMullen's hatred for BB, Tomase's treachery, and Felger the Borges bit ch and you have a rogue's gallery of media hacks. Gee seems very eager to excuse the unprofessional attitude of his peers.

I was never a Michael Gee fan, but he really nailed it here.

Of course he could have slammed reporters more but what's the point? Borges almost assaulted Carrol at a press conference, he's a paranoid lunatic who's jealous of anyone successful.

Mike Reiss of the Globe certainly finds out enough stuff about the Pats’ operation to satisfy the most detail-obsessed fan. He does this through the sneaky trick of having earned the coach’s respect.

Reiss emulates Belichick’s approach to football. He was, and I assume is, always at Gillette Stadium. I never once walked into the press room without Reiss already being there, and this was when he was at the MetroWest News, far down the press corps pecking order.

I also think BB could make his, and the teams life easier by using his considerable intellect and charm to lighten up the interactions at press conferences.

They're going to be half stupid questions anyway, why make them as tense as a murder trial? Stockpile some stupid answers for stupid questions and let's get on with our lives.

Alan was, however, also Belichick’s most persistent questioner when the coach did stonewall. He had a sneaky trick, too. Alan could make Belichick laugh. He phrased his efforts in humorous ways whose subtext was “this is a ridiculous thing for both of us to be doing, but we gotta, so here goes.”

I believe that is very close to what Belichick believes about press relations. It’s a silly but inescapable part of his job, so he does it in as good a spirit as he can muster. What the hell, maybe he can teach some of them something about football along the way.

I always felt that using self-deprecating humor and intelligently phrased questions would 'work' with Bellichick. Alan is missed.

I don't know why media hates BB that much. Overall, he is a nice guy because none Pat players speak to him when he calls.

One of my favorite "media on the media" articles I've ever read. Insightful yet to the point in a poignant way most writers will never capture. His past writing history aside, whether you liked it or hated it, I can't for the life of me figure how any football fan wouldn't enjoy that article as a stand alone.
