It struck me while watching the replay of the Colts-Patriots AFCCG last night.
Both the 2006 and 2007 seasons ended and Champsionships lost because the defense allowed 80 yard TD drives with less than 2 minutes to go.
We should have 5 Super Bowl titles ,not 3. But we no longer have a clutch defense, we have the kind of defense we had in the late 70's, a soft defense that you couldnt count on when it counted.
Im sick of all the offense talk, until we get back to being a defense first team like we were in 2001, 2003, and 2004, I dont like our chances.

there i feel better.......

Re: 2 Consecutives years the vaunted Patriots defense lost Chasmpionships

i think this year our offense lost it. the OL specifically

Re: 2 Consecutives years the vaunted Patriots defense lost Chasmpionships

The team lost the last 2 years. Both the offense and the defense had failures that had they not happenned would have won both games.

This whole blame playoff losses on one side of the ball thing should be left to Peyton Manning's apologists.

Re: 2 Consecutives years the vaunted Patriots defense lost Chasmpionships

they had the lead in both games with 2 minutes to play and other team backed to their own 20. Thats the bottom line. 32 points allowed in the second half in 2006. 14 points allowed in the 4th qtr in 2007. The game was won both years and the defense allowed the unthinkable both years.
If its baseball and your team leading 2-1 going into the 9th inning of Game 7 of the WS and 2 years in a row your closer blows it, you're going to blame the offense?
We had it both times.
People,
Tom Brady and the offense is not the problem. It wasnt either year. We had better offenses both years than we did in 2001.

Re: 2 Consecutives years the vaunted Patriots defense lost Chasmpionships

The offense only scored 14 points and wasn't able to get into field goal range with 35 seconds and 3 timeouts at their disposal.

14 points was enough to win that game, they had a 14-10 lead with 2 minutes to play and the Giants needed to go the length of the field. I dont know about you but i didnt feel confident.

100% Correct - win as a TEAM - lose as a team. The coaches, offense, defense & special teams have no one to blame but themselves.
2008 is our year again....finally!!!

Re: 2 Consecutives years the vaunted Patriots defense lost Chasmpionships

I don't feel confident either.

Lifer's right, When we had the lead and needed a stop, the defense couldn't do it. all year the defese had trouble. masked with huge leads that made teams one dimensional against us, thus easier to defend. But put us in a game vs the Eagles or the Ravens, and we had to score points. Our offense needed to carry our defense.

With the game on the line, and you need to make a stop. Our defense could not.

Last year the offense had 3rd and 4 to win it. Didn't get it and then the defense let them go down the field.

This year the offense had ample chances to score, or at least move the ball, and couldn't, and overall played a poor game, esp the OL. But the defense let them go down the field at the end.

So both years both the offense and defense contributed. It's a team game.

your threads rock, lifer

"I hope we lose opening day" - http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/showthread.php?t=79290

"Patriots gave a TD in last 2:00 of all 4 Super Bowls " - http://www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/showthread.php?t=79490

is this part 2 of that last one?

thank you, tf. God help us that we arent on the same level with this particular "lifer".

Here's the facts. The NFL's #1 scoring D gave up 16.4/game last year. We gave up 17 in the SB. Not far off. The NFL's #1 scoring O(ours) averaged 36.8. We scored 14. 23 below average. Now, shut up.

I would say the same goes for the AFCCG loss as well.

our O tanked at the end of the first half, couldn't play possession keep-away (either then or in 3rd quarter of 2nd half) and gave the ball back to Dolts with time left for them to do some damage. Despite the high points scored in AFCCG our Offense let us down and left the D out on the field too long with too much clock time and that lead to the loss.

Same was case in SB only more so - too many 3 and outs left defense out there too much; especially after that initial 10 minute long drive in first half.

Re: 2 Consecutives years the vaunted Patriots defense lost Chasmpionships

we need pass rushers

Re: 2 Consecutives years the vaunted Patriots defense lost Chasmpionships

Yeah I can honestly say that I had little confidence in the defense after Moss gave us the lead with a few minutes left. Play after play they choked, missed opportunities to either end the game or cripple their chances of scoring. It still pisses me off to think about the missed interceptions, sack and I think they even had a fourth down at one point and they just ran right up the middle through our D for the first.

Yes the offense blew it for the majority of the game and the defense was doing pretty well till late but in the end the defense blew it for the second year in a row. I also don't pin any blame on Brady for not being able to lead us down for a miracle score with less than a minute and way back on our side of the field.

I actually agree. Yes, the defense could have put more pressure on Eli, and they should have held off the Giants on their final scoring drive, but that defense still only gave up 17 points, which should have been enough to win the game.

Let's face it, NE's record breaking offense was a no show during that SB, and the Giants pass rush simply teed off on Brady. The offensive line didn't play good at all, but I also thought some of that had to do with play calling, which was pathetic. You know the Giants pass rush is getting home, right? So, why continue calling long developing passing plays, that require sustained blocks?

It really didn't jive with how the Patriots usually do things. Remember, the offense that would take what the defense was giving them, and still get the job done? Nope, during that SB NE's offense just decided to keep banging it's head against the wall, even though it obviously wasn't getting them anywhere.

Moving on, I'm pumped for the draft, and can't wait to see what BB & Pioli do.

You shouldn't because for 2 years in a row, the vaunted Patriots offense failed to show good clock management and failed to get the needed 1st down that would have prevented the opposing team from getting the ball back.

It was a TEAM loss and the quicker you realize that the smarter you'll be instead of ignorantly blaming just the defense.

Re: 2 Consecutives years the vaunted Patriots defense lost Chasmpionships

I just love that 45 men are active for each game, yet people who have been watching the game for likely a comparatively short time are able to judge which 15-20 of them are specifically to blame for a loss, based on what of the game they watched on their tiny television sets that show a fraction of the 22 people actively playing it.

Or maybe the Pats are cursed when they play the Mannings?

Really-my team was the same way when we played the Steelers in the 70's. We pretty much lost to this team the same way you guys did to the Mannings.

Dunno-but maybe some things are just meant to be/not to be?

Pats owned the Mannings many times, especially the elder.

Some things are just not worth re-hashing, either. I hate even seeing these thread titles. Let us heal ourselves!
