My Dream Draft - April 2008

The Media Hype of Jones and the COWBOYS moving to the top of the draft needs to stop. They have needs at WR, CB and RB.. The draft is deep in rb and they can address the other areas with their 2 first rounders..

They aren't going to spend top end cash for a part time rb..

You do know that there are only two rounds on the first day now... Seems like you are asking for a lot in 2 rounds.

Despite that fact, most people still lump round 3 in with "day one."

Rather not draft a QB in the 4th we have never really picked a QB that high we usually take fliers on ones late in the 6th-7th (Brady, Cassel, Guitierrez). Not high of a need to spend a 4th on a QB, we could get a TE, Punter or Oline there.

Rohan Davey says hi.

Seriously, though, I don't think there was a strategy of taking only 6th/7th/UDFA picks; I just think it's worked out that way as a result of Brady's success. It'll be interesting to see what the Pats do when Brady's time here nears its inevitable conclusion--whenever that might be.

I don't see why most people are down on Lofton. He is a stud of a player. Sure he may not be the fastest, or the biggest, but then again neither is Teddy B, or many many others that have been phenomenal in the NFL.

I admit I'm a huge Oklahoma Fan, but I've got to see him play for years now and he makes plays EVERYWHERE. He had 157 tackles last year!! That's more than any Bob Stoops player has ever had at Oklahoma (the most tackles from any OU player since 1979). He had at least 10 tackles in 8 games last year.

To boot he is, character wise, a stand up guy, and never got into trouble, and I've heard Stoops say he is one of the hardest working players he has ever coached. So he is smart, athletic, has good character, hard working, and tremendous football skills. Gee...I think he sounds rather a nice fit.

Oh and BTW yes I am his agent.....kidding...

Numbers alone rarely give a complete picture of an NFL player; they can make a player look better than he is (e.g., Reggie Bush), or sell him short (e.g., Wes Welker).

Round 1 (Projected trade)

Matt Ryan falls to 7
(Baltimore deals their #8 overall and their 4th round pick (102) for our #7)

(8) Patriots select (Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie)

Why would the Ravens do that trade? Unless another team from spot #9 and higher wants Ryan.

Bingo........for just that reason.........You get an A+

Agreed. How many OU games have you watched? I doubt very many or else I'd wager you' feel similarly about Lofton as I do.

I like Lofton. But his workouts were not on par with good Lbers from years past. It's not the kiss of death, but it makes you hesitate to draft a kid before rd 3. Usually great prospects show it on the field and at the combine/pro day workouts. If the Pats draft him I'll be happy, knowing they must have insight into his ability beyond what an average fan like me can fathom.

The Browns did this a few years ago to secure the services of Winslow.. They gave up a high #2 to move up 1 spot.. It happens.. Especially when u look at the fact that next year there is no top QB coming out.. This is why Brohm and Ryan will go higher..

Just a general comment, but I think people are way too aggressive in criticizing other posters opinions on draft prospects. If they say something that's flat out wrong its one thing, but most of the time people get bashed by others who simply have an opinion.

There is nobody on this board who has any real idea whether Rodgers-Cromartie is overrated or not. That's simply an opinion, if someone thinks he's worth the 8th pick, that's an equally valid opinion. Neither of the people have probably seen more than 1 Tenn State game and I am almost certain neither of them have talked to the Tenn State head coach or db coach.

Also, physical testing tends to get overrated by ALL of us. I am a sucker for the guy with great combine/pro day numbers, but the numbers don't usually don't the tell the story. Check out NFL Draft Scout and look at the top combine performances by position over the last ten years. There are guys that tore it up at the combine like CB Chris Mckenzie from Arizona State who haven't been heard from in the NFL and guys who did awful at the combine who have become solid NFL players. Clark Haggans has the second slowest 40 time since 2000 among all OLB's tested. The 14th slowest 40 time by an OLB at the combine belongs to Akin Ayodele. Jared Allen has the worst bench press of all DE's tested since 2000 and Marcus Stroud ties for the 14th worst mark among DT's in the same time period. I remember Terrell Suggs running terrible 40's at his pro day and nobody questions his ability as a pass rusher now.

Obviously there are plenty of examples the other way as well like Mike Williams lack of speed becoming apparent after his workouts or Ty Detmer's lack of arm strength.

Someones dream draft may very well be your nightmare today, but you might regret you didn't love their dream in 2 years.

Final Draft Board reads as follows

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie
Curtis Lofton
Chevis Jackson
Tavares Gooden
Erik Ainge
Steve Slaton/Dexter Jackson
Jo-Lonn Dunbar

I just don't think there's anyone to trade with at the top of the draft. I'd like to see the following:

1-7 CB - Leodis McKelvin - Troy
2-62 RB - Matt Forte – Tulane
3-69 ILB - Jerod Mayo - Tennessee
3-94 NT - Athyba Rubin - Iowa State
4-128 OLB - Darrell Robertson - Georgia Tech
5-165 CB - Orlando Scandrick - Boise State
6-199 CB/SS - Zackary Bowman - Nebraska (injury prone)
7-239 LT - James Blair - Western Michigan

Dream Draft, no trade version. Using Scott Wright's mock draft as a rough guide for the early picks:

1.7 - OT Clady Boise St
2.62 - LB Goff Vanderbilt
3.69 - LB Avril Purdue
3.94 - WR Royal Virginia Tech
4.128 - CB Williams Kent St
5.165 - CB Ikegwuono Wisconsin
6.199 - S Doggett Oregon St
7.239 - TE Barnidge Louisville

Here's my take:

1-Vernon Gholston OLB Ohio State
2- Antoine Cason CB Arizona
3-Anthony Collins OT Kansas
3- Dexter Jackson WR App St
4- Tom Zbikowski S Notre Dame
5- Jack Williams CB Kent State
6- J Leman LB Illinois
7- Tommy Blake DE TCU

I can see something like that too. I think that our options/selection at #7 is going to set the path for the rest of the draft to follow.

I agree with you. They could trade down and then take a CB in 1st round, but they won't take one at #7. They could possibly take Keith Rivers at #7 if they have no options. I really wonder what would happen if they took McFadden at #7. I think they'll go corner heavy in rounds 2-4. Cause there is alot of depth there.

Agreed. I'd be shocked if the #7 pick wasn't OT or LB, were we to keep it.

I actually emailed Mike Reiss alittle over a week ago, and he wrote to me that he highly doubted they would take a OT at #7. I think he is pretty well connected to the inside of the Patriots front office. Probably better then anyone else, so I'll take his work for that.
