Nice little article and funny how close similarities are this early in his career to the great Steve Largent of the Seahawks who is one of the best ever to play the game.

If Wes ends his career with anything close to Largent's stats he may go down as one of the greatest Patriots receivers ever.

Neat article but I tend to lose respect for "writers" who have trouble with simple facets of the English language. That might be the most poorly written sentence I've ever read...

Did Largent have a #1 receiver on the other side of the field that made his life that much easier? I think calling Welker the next Largent is a huge exaggeration at this point.

As a Colts fan, I hardly fit the 'homer' category. I'm also an old man who watched Largent play his whole career. Certainly, he hasn't yet played long enough to be placed along side of Largent but given good health and enough seasons, Welker may well go down as one of the all-time great slot-recievers.
He scares the living hell out of me.

As I've pointed out before, if you ask Moss, I think he'd be the first to point out that the "making life easier" thing works both ways--TD catch #23 happened because the Giants were determined not to let Welker get the first down.

Welker fills a specific role and he's as good at that as anyone. We also have Randy Moss.

I know some just compare statistics, but for the role we need filled, Wes is just fine.

I wonder if draft analyst will ever compare Tim Tebow when he comes out to a Vick, McNabb or Culpepper. He is white so we might get a Fran Tarkenton comparison

I didn't make that comparison. I said I'd rather have Welker (I would, for what we need. Largent wasn't as spastically elusive as Welker, and that's what we need Wes for. Largent was a great possession receiver, but we don't really need that).

I also said i didn't consider him an all time great when he played (I've been watching football since the early 60's.)

He was a very good, disciplined, reliable possession receiver who was consistent over a long period. There were receivers during his era with less accumulation of statistics I considered great, that defense adjusted for, that made great plays.

I'm making different points than the OP, not agreeing with him.

Was Largent primarily a slot receiver too? If so, the comparison is defensible. Otherwise, not so much.
