Just saw him on ESPN. He basically said he was not going to go as high as some Mocks have him. Said the GM feeling is that he is not one of the six elite players and not a value pick in the top six. Said the Jets would be taking a big gamble if they pick him.

Interesting. Perhaps we are not seriously looking at him.

I agree. But I also think all Big-10 players are extremely overrated. The conference just isn't that good and you seem to see alot more busts from it than others. Offensive lineman tend to be the one exception, but even that isn't always the case.

you're sounding like a broken record

IMO Gholston's draft value is over-inflated because pundits are in awe of his physique and combine numbers. I would not be surprised at all if the Pats passed on him at No. 7 if he was still on the board.

I know. But I don't think I can say it enough. That said, if Gholston's available there, I'd think long and hard about him. I'm not sure if I'd want him over Quentin Groves though.

One of the guys on NFLN's Path to the Draft said the same thing, said he talked to a scout of a team with a Top Ten pick who said something like Gholston will work out better but Harvey will be the better, more consistent player. That's paraphrased, not word for word.

Yeah, thats the beauty of the pre draft analysis--all the guessing. As a Friday morning QB I will bet we are not seriously looking at him at 7. Perhaps we are looking more at Ellis, Clady, or Riversetc.

he is overated if he put up say 25 reps of 225 nobody would be talking about him going in the top 10. Based on talent as a football player and athlete hes not top 10, based on physical skills he is top 5.

This is nonsense. Somebody wants Gholston to drop. Gholston's floor is very high. He will be productive starter in the NFL at his worst and is well worth the #7 pick. If they are worried about Gholston's motor, why aren't they worried about Harvey's (I like Harvey too, but not at #7)? Did they even watch Harvey play this year? His effort was like hitting the snooze alarm.

I read a scouting report on him about a month ago. There are so many I don't remember who's report it was. But I do remember it was the first time I read anything negative about Gholston. The report said he was TO MUSCULER, that he had no flexability, that he couldn't change direction because he is "to muscle bound". It went on to say that he wouldn't make a good OLB in a 3-4 because he wasn't agile enough,he was better suited as a DE in a Tampa 2 defense.

If he is there at 7 and we pass, it will say a lot since we have an inside source in Mike Vrabel. That being said, I believe Gholston will be a great pro.

The Pro Football Weekly draft guide had a nice piece on Gholston and his work ethic. He seems to have a desire to be the best. He would come in here and benefit from learning from the vets and BB. He would also benefit from single coverage, thanks to Vrabel, Thomas, Seymour, etc.

Can you imagine 3rd and long with Green, Thomas, Vrabel, Seymour and Gholston as a 5 man rush? That would make our secondary look very good.

Maybe you read it at the same place I did:

(sorry for no link and the malformed URL - my post count is too low to post a link and I had to work around the URL filter - just remove the spaces to make it work).

I think that he won't translate well to a player who needs to play in space. His 40 is also worse than Groves's 40 and he DIDN'T vertical jump 42 inches.

I wouldn't draft him - he smacks of the workout warrior. Falling in love with a player's physique is something bad teams do, not the Pats.

I agree with McShay, and I've said similar things in the past.

He's raw, needs work on his tech, and looks awkward in coverage. I've also thought he seemed more like a 43 DE, then an every down 34 OLB prospect. I could easily see someone like Al Davis over drafting him though.

You were eager for the Pats to draft Lamarr Woodley in the 1st rd last year, a player who is short, stocky, stiff and one dimensional; but dislike Gholston, who is essentially a taller, faster version of Lamarr Woodley with more upside. If anything I would have thought you would jump at the chance to draft Lamarr Woodley version 2.0, upgraded. BTW, I like Lamarr Woodley. He started to make an impact late last season and seems penciled in for starting rush LB next season. But anything he can do, Gholston can do better. Athletic freaks of Gholston's caliber are very rare commodities and the Pats would be fortunate to draft him at #7.

Yup, I liked LaMarr Woodley, a lot. Different player than Gholston though.

Also, that was a late first round pick, not the 7th pick overall. At 6'2" LaMarr wasn't "short", and he wasn't "one dimensional" either.

Oh, and I never said I didn't like Gholston, only that I still have some questions concerning his ability to be an every down 34 OLB, and in my opinion, he's more of a 43 DE. So, I simply don't see him as a safe pick at 7th overall, and NE could trade down and pick up a better pass rusher (Groves) who also looked more fluid in LB drills during his Pro Day. Actually, Groves looked better than players who've played LB their entire career, and he seems to like the idea of playing 34 OLB. Ask Gholston what style of defense he prefers...

I don't know what to think about that. I look at Gholston and I see a physical specimen similar to Shawn Merriman. It's not like he's some soft big 10 player, he's a huge player with a physique and talent level that he could prevail anywhere outside of the big ten. I seriously doubt they'd pass on him if he was there for the taking.

Groves is less of a risk after trade down. He also runs a 4.5 40, which is extremely fast for an OLB.
Gholston is a conversion project risk at OLB at #7. I cannot deny that he has a lot of physical tools though.
Someone explain why Gholston is less of a risk at #7 than a DRC?
I'd rather trade down to the teens and take Groves, but that's just me.

anyone know what people were saying about merriman and ware coming out of college? were they considered "overrated"?

I'm not discounting the report - but if I'm a team picking at #7 and I want the guy, I go out of my way to have friendly sources leak a suggestion that he's under-rated and not worth a top 6 pick.

At this time of year I take a very skeptical look at the information and misinformation about players.

every single player in the draft is overrated, with the workout warriors being at the top of the list.

Nobody has done a damn thing yet.
