Apparently the Saints are interested in Shockey and may give up a 2nd round pick which is what the Giants are reported to be asking for trading his services away.

Should the Patriots join N.O. in interest for this veteran former all-pro TE?

With a gimpy and inconsistent Watson and an unproven David Thomas I think it is well worth letting a 2nd rounder go and maybe even throw in a 7th rounder or maybe a late rounder in 2009 to juice it up a bit.

And it would also free up looking for a TE in this years draft which is very thin of talent at that position.

How good of a blocker is he. With the attitude he has I wuold hope a good one. If he is I would be interested.

Isn't Shockey just as gimpy?

Re: Jeremy Shockey may be traded for a 2nd rounder -Should the Patriots join in inter

Doubtful. Sure he's a good receiver but I don't know how well
he blocks. That's what we need. A blocking TE. Not another receiver like TE.
Dave thomas will be back and as far as I know, so will Ben Watson.

Besides that, he'd cost too much money.

Re: Jeremy Shockey may be traded for a 2nd rounder -Should the Patriots join in inter

not for a second rounder, we need more depth on D and a second rounder is too precious to waste on a luxury like another pass catching poor blocking TE

Well....He has had injuries over the past few years but when healthy his hands are far more trusting than Watson who drops too many IMO.

Re: Jeremy Shockey may be traded for a 2nd rounder -Should the Patriots join in inter

No thanks. Really, TE is not our most important need at this point. A second rounder could go to much more important needs.

Re: Jeremy Shockey may be traded for a 2nd rounder -Should the Patriots join in inter

Shockey is in no way worth a 2nd round pick.

He is:

1/ Overrated
2/ Always hurt
3/ A major attitude problem.

You could find much, much better value at the TE position.

Re: Jeremy Shockey may be traded for a 2nd rounder -Should the Patriots join in inter

Currently his career is defined by the Giants becoming better after he got hurt and his attitude was removed from their offensive huddle.

Why would anyone give a 2nd round pick for that?

Re: Jeremy Shockey may be traded for a 2nd rounder -Should the Patriots join in inter

You mean the guy that turned the Giants into missing the playoffs to Super Bowl champions by getting hurt, and has a serious foot injury and won't be ready for next season? Yeah sign me up for that. In fact, let's offer the #7 pick just to make sure we get him.

Re: Jeremy Shockey may be traded for a 2nd rounder -Should the Patriots join in inter

Well, ya know, Seeing as we had the highest scoring offense ever (or something like that).
And our defense is in serious need of a "youth movement", I'd say no.
I'd say that 2nd round pick is worth a whole lot to us right now.
More valuable to us than Shockey to be sure.
I agree that Watson's injury history is becoming an issue, but still, no.

No, too much attitiude and he's has one of the Patriots rings.

Re: Jeremy Shockey may be traded for a 2nd rounder -Should the Patriots join in inter

Here's a better idea: why don't we offer a handle of hard liquor and a gun to Shockey so he can do us all a favor. Definitely not.

Re: Jeremy Shockey may be traded for a 2nd rounder -Should the Patriots join in inter

Think VALUE and need.
The obvious answer is NFW.
He too is injury proned (sic), has a big attitude and a bigger contract. Why waste a 2nd or even a low pick on the guy with the cap hit? We're spending enough at the TE position as is. Pick a late round or UFA TE if interested in taking a flyer.

Worried about improving the O in 2008? Then look for an OT.

NO...I think people here understand that NAME players hardly live up to what they are...as was said NFW!!

Kinda makes me wish that the same thing happened to Watson right?

Re: Jeremy Shockey may be traded for a 2nd rounder -Should the Patriots join in inter

Shockey is a poor route runner who freelances far too much for a Belioli team.

Watson's drops are as over-blown as Daniel Graham's were.

I agree with you 100% cousin.I was mocked pretty good last week for suggesting the same. It's the Saints who turned the deal down according to PFT. I like Watson but he is inconsistent and injury prone. What I love to tell people who disagree with our opinion (and that is what it is, an opinion), that we give up our second rounder #62 and a safety (The Giants wanted Roman Harper from the Saints as well as a #2) for that deal asap. I am not a big James Sanders fan. Merriweather can take James slot and is a much better tackler. I would do this deal in a minute pending salary CAP considerations and contract issues. Maybe draft a Barret or Zbikowski as your back-up.
I would rate Watson as mediocre at best since his time here. Just small teases here and there. Thomas has been hurt a bit as well. Who knows if he will make it? So we are down to Spach if Thomas can't go and it Watson doesn't heal? Is anybody happy with that?
You know BB will need to go TE. I know that Shockey isn't a Daniel Graham blocker but he would be a much more dependable weapon that Watson. He is a middle threat that Watson is not.
Honestly, it's 3rd and ten and they are doubling Wes and Randy, Shockey is a luxury to TB. Yes, he has been dinged with a broken fibula recovery but he'll be ready. I think a broken foot (Thomas) and a surgically repaired ankle (Watson) are less likely to be ready at training camp. A rookie? I don't think so. By the way Watson, no catches in the SB??? If I hear injury, he should have been a scratch.
Good suggestion PATRIOTSFANINPA!
