He is already out of the lineup for a hang nail.

Well done Theo !

He has back spasms. The same thing as Beckett. Are you criticizing Beckett too?

Drew, for the dollars and length invested, might be one of the worst signings in recent memory. Decent player but not worth his contract.

If you're comparing Beckett and Drew, one of these players has a track record of missing games for less-than-severe injuries.. It's hard not to say 'here we go again' with this guy..

Yeah, and thats Beckett with the track record of missing significant time. He has been on the DL 7 times since 2003. Drew has been on the DL once in that same time (the result of getting drilled in the wrist). The JD Drew that missed weeks at a time with injuries hasn't been around in years.

Beckett's DL stints were all due to blisters or avulsions I believe. Minor stuff that he seems to have put behind him for the most part.

He spent time on the DL in 2004 for a strained back, time in 2005 for an oblique injury, additional time in 2005 for a shoulder injury, and is currently on the DL for a back injury.

He's spent more time on the DL for stuff like that than just blisters or avulsions.

Man, Foley stole the words out of my mouth in those posts.

You'd think a series changing Grand Slam and being an RBI machine in the ALCS and WS would buy a guy a few games of leeway before fans start bashing him again. Drew is certainly overpaid, but that's not his fault and it's very possible the Red Sox don't win the World Series last year without him and that Grand Slam, which makes him worth those $70M even if he goes 0 for the rest of his contract.

If you are going to give Drew ****, how can you not give Beckett ****? They have the same injury yet Beckett's on the DL for it, they both have been healthy for the Red Sox but had reputations of not playing through injuries when they weren't Red Sox. It looks very similar to me.

How about we set a rule where we can't complain until a full week of baseball has gone by?

I disagree.. while he may not have gone on the DL (I'll take your word for it), he's missed a significant amount of games in the field. His hitting stats show him playing in more games because he probably pinch hit. Here are the number of games he's played in the field since 2001:

2001 118 games
2002 125
2003 80
2004 146
2005 74
2006 135
2007 137

Out of 162 games, he's missed an average of 46 games per season the last 7 years.

137 games in the field isn't that low a number for a regular, and certainly nothing to complain about. Among Red Sox regulars last year 137 games in the field was about average, with only Lowell and Youkilis playing over 145 games in the field. His 135 and 146 games in the field in 2006 and 2004 each ranked as second on his team in those years.

Like I said, Drew missed a lot of time pre-2004 for several recurring injuries, but outside of a fluke HBP he has been no less healthy than the average player since. Criticizing his injury history now is like criticizing Ortiz for having a giant hole in his swing when he was in Minnesota. Drew is certainly not an iron man, but hes also not the china doll that many think he is.

Why does this thread remind of the words of one Maurice Vaughn?

Stupid Bosto....nevermind. :D

It's a lot when you've played your entire career in the national league. The guy is the epitomy of a china doll.

He played more games in the field than all but one guy on his team in 2 of his last 3 years in the NL. That makes him a china doll?

2002 37 games missed
2003 82 games missed
2004 16 games missed (career low)
2005 88 games missed
2006 27 games missed
2007 25 games missed
2008 3 out of 4 games missed

This makes him a china doll.

You're just rehashing what has already been said. He missed a lot of time before 2004, but since then the only thing that caused him to miss significant time was the result of a HBP. Missing 27 games a season is not a lot, especially when that ranks as the second fewest on your team.

That's missing one out of 6 games.. that is a lot, especially, as you say, he hasn't had any major injuries.. He misses a lot of these games because, in my opinion, he has a low pain tolerance. The fact that it's the 2nd fewest on the team is irrelevant.

Different teams and managers like to give their players different amounts of rest. Judging him against his peers is extremely relevant. So the fact that he played within 10 games of every regular on the team other than Mike Lowell in 2007 is an important fact in my opinion.

And theres a difference between "low pain tolerance" and not wanting a minor injury to becoming a major one. Playing through every little injury is a great way to shorten a career (ie. Trot Nixon).

Huh? That's 17% of his teams games. That's awful. Also, by your logic, a guy hitting .220 wouldn't have a bad average, if it was second best on his team. A pitcher with a 5.40 ERA wouldn't be bad, if it were second best on his team.
