Normally mediots comments to me go in one ear and out the other but besides Gil Brandt,The only other media guy I can really respect when they make a comment or prognostication is Pat Kirwin.

While on Sirius NFL Radio this afternoon discussing the Patriots draft possibilities,Kirwin seems very confident that the Patriots main interest at the #7 spot and the only reason they will stay there is if Gholston is available when its thier time to pick,If Gholston is gone by #7 he predicts its a near certainty that the Pats trade down.

Interesting prediction but like I said hes a fantastic guy to listen to so I think its a decent possibility.

He also predicted if Gholston is gone and the Pats DO trade down then it will be with #10 New Orleans who may want Ellis very badly and should still be around at #7.

Good find. Thanks for the information.

Ok so with that said who do the Patriots take at #10?

If they like that much, logic would say that they are willing to move up to get him. If he's around at 3 and 4 or 5 they are on the phone. Obviously so are the JETS.

He did say it would likely be a corner but was not as confident in his talk - So Cromartie may be the guy although I think its a bit high of a spot for him at #10 coming from a tiny school

I don't know if its going to be a trade with New Orleans but I would be a bit surprised if the Rams pass on Gholston,I think he would fit well with that team and would fill the need in thier weakest spot on a weak defense,Jake Long is another possibility for St Louis but the smart money is on Gholston for them.

I still have visions of a DL or OL............snoozville on draft day.

Hey I agree with you about a good fit with the rams and thier needs and obviously tackle. I like Gholston, The only thing I have noticed about vernon is he is much better getting pressure with his hand on the ground, he does'nt seem to make as many plays or have the suddeness while standing up. I don't think he is as good of a fit as a hybrid/olb as people may think. Then again my opinion is'nt even valued at the dinner table so, for what it's worth.

It's hard for me dto disagree with this idea. It's feeling less and less likely Gholston will be there at #7. I wonder what they could get for moving down a few spots? Could they get a 3 for this year?

Swapping from 7 to 10 is worth an early 3rd rounder. Moving down to the 12-15 range is worth a mid 2nd rounder.

Ya think? A deal like that for THIS year would be a pretty good deal if you ask me.
That's assuming that Gholston is gone of course.
I was thinking we would have to get a pick for NEXT year to make out that good.

Hmm...you think logic dictates that if they'd take him at #7, they'd be willing to trade their #61 to move up for him, thus eliminating the chance at a top CB? (Surely nothing below the #61 would get the trade done.) I don't think that logically has to follow at all. IMO, the value relationships look like this:

#7 + #61 > Gholston > #7 > any other player on the board at that point

If the trade was with N.O., the Pats could swap #2 draft

picks with N.O.

Any other year, I could see them giving up a pick to move up, but this year I think they might be hesitant. They need some young talent, and this years draft has GOT to be deeper than last years.
Unless they are goo goo - gaa gaa over Gholston.
The 61 has significant value to us.
We have a decent 3rd, right?

Is this the wise pick, though? Losing Wilson, Samuel, and Randall Gay, the secondary is damaged...is Gholston really the right way to go? I've seen a lot of media people say Aqib Talib. I'm just curious what you all think about DL vs. CB/S.

Looking at the chart on NFLDraftCountdown, our first is worth the 1st and the 3rd of the Saints.

The front office has always placed more value on the front 7, and wisely so, you win games in the trenches. We desperately need youth and speed in our linebacking corps, and Gholston is the best man for the job. Whether he's available or not is a different matter.

I'm certain we'll try and trade down, pick up an extra pick or two, and use those picks wisely.

Welcome to Patsfans.com by the way :)

I would say that if Gholston is off the board, than that deal would be a complete no-brainer.
Agreed all?

Trade up a couple of spots provided they are convinced Gholston is a

potential all-pro. This would mean giving up the #3 pick from Oakland.

Thanks for the welcome. :)

Agreed, watching a few of the LBs get abused last year was bad. My only thought is that when you lose as much of the secondary as the Pats did, how do you ignore it in round 1? If Gholston is as good as they think he is (and I'd never second guess Belichik and Pioli) then it's worth it, I would just hate to watch the Eagles scorch us in the passing game with AJ Touchy Feeley again because we can't cover a 5 yard-in route.
