just ask yourself how Stern was able to get past the Ref point shaving scandel 20x quicker than spygate?

answer: because Goodell is incompatant.

it's amazing how NE fans of all people could be against him

he's protecting the pats from walsh, or at least trying to (because he's protecting the nfl, all of his decisions are done to protect the nfl from itself, and keep it's #1 spot)

You're assuming a) that the Pats need to be protected, and b) that he iddn't make the mess that he's now trying to clean up. Both are incorrect. A competent GM wouldn't have let Spygate become this big of an issue in the first place, and would have told specter to go to hell from the beginnning.

jcdavey's pretty much got it right, at this point:

I.e., the NFL protects its interests at this juncture by not further focusing on the Pats. That is because the NFL's first interest is to have sovereignty over its own affairs, rather than respond to the temper tantrums of fans with horrible conflicts of interest, who also just happen to be a US Senator.

I couldn't find my exact category to vote for. I think it would be:

- Goodell's "cleaning up" of the league may actually have been well-intentioned enough, but had unintended consequences as regards the Patriots. Thereafter he's not done badly, as of this writing.

I don't think you praise somebody who sets a house on file because he then throws a bucket of gasoline on it which is what Goodell has done. Obviously, you don't realize that the reason he destroyed the tapes was to protect the other teams that tapoed not the Pats. I don't think the Pats need any protection from Walsh. I think Walsh is scared of going to Walpole if he shows up.

The problem with Goodell is that he screwed up initially on Spygate and has just given lip service to DOING ANYTHING after that. He did pour gasolene on the fire...but his words about fairness and having a level playing field are just that...words. I do not think one can find ANY ACTION by him since then AND when there have been allegations that have surfaced, they have NOT been looked into with the same zeal. That is one reason why the 'unfairness' label can be PINNED right on him.
When there was allegations of the blackout period by QB and coach teams being overridden, I would have thought that he would have pounced on that right away and MADE SURE this was not going on. This allegation was made by Mike Sando a few weeks after Spygate broke and to many certainly represents a MUCH LARGER unfairness than anything the Patriots have done and yet, this champion of fairness did squat. What does that tell the fans?? After the Colt game, he said he was going to investigate the officials and what occured in the game. So far, nothing and one can only surmise that that investigation was thrown in the circular file. And then there was the piped in sound, which has always been done at Domes it seems and yet while this is also a clear violation of the rules, it has not been looked at at all. Even with the tampering rules that have been broken and the fact that he specifically sent out a memo on them just before free agency. teams seemed to ignore that memo and yet, where was the Mighty Sword of Fairness from Goodell?
One can only really conclude that if he was well intentioned on "cleaning up" the league, he has NOT done anything close to cleaning up the league. More like he's put the exterminater to take care of one corner of one room and ignored everything else. Where is the fairness taking it all out on one team and letting violations by other teams go totally unpunished. If he wants to look at having a level playing field, he's really looked the other way at many points.
SO did he really wish to clean up the league? If THAT was his intention, he has totally failed..for there have been many times where he could have exhibited the same outrage and basically ignored what was going on instead of taking action. I am not sure how being unfair like he has has helped the league.
I think he understands there is so much to clean up that it may be beyond what he can do...thus not doing anything sort of covers it all; more like keeping all the fingers in the dyke to keep it from breaking. As far as Walsh, Spector and Levy are concerned, I don't know if they will ever get that close. It seems Walsh is looking for a license to steal (If he has a tape) and defame/libel...on his way to a big payday. THAT is not happening; not being allowed by the NFL and that is why they may never get that close.
Notice how every few weeks this story surfaces..Spector, Walsh, Levy want it in the news, even though I think a chasm has been met that will never be crossed...closer closer..but there may never be a deal.

Look...don't anyone take offense but I HAVE to post this...I'm an older NE fan... Pats, Sox, Bruins and Celts. I played all four sports growing up and have followed all four teams for well over 45 years. Now READ this....

Goodell is the son of the late United States Senator Charles E. Goodell, a Republican from New York.

The Goodell family moved to Bronxville, New York, in 1971, where Roger graduated from high school. A three-sport star for Bronxville High School in football, basketball, and baseball, Goodell captained all three teams as a senior and was named the athlete of the year at Bronxville High.[5]

Goodell's career in the NFL began in 1982 as an administrative intern in the league office in New York under then-Commissioner Pete Rozelle - a position secured through an extensive letter-writing campaign to the league office and each of its then 28 teams. In 1983, he joined the New York Jets as an intern, but returned to the league office in 1984 as an assistant in the public relations department.

You SEE that???....HE is a New York sports fan first and foremost...and obviously a JET FAN!!! He jumped to intern for the RATS...THEN parlayed his family political connections for an EVEN choicer plum with the league...BUT this guy was hating on all New England teams since he was a kid in Bronxville. IT IS WHAT THEY DO IN NEW YORK. Just like I hated on ALL New York teams growing up in New England. Given the chance I would MOST CERTAINLY dog the Jets if I had the opportunity that power and privelege grants. He is NOT inept, he DID NOT make anb error in judgement...HE SCREWED NEW ENGLAND AND NE FANS THE FIRST DYAM CHANCE HE GOT.

Don't even give me this crap about spying and affecting games and the rest of this invented media construct...Belichick ignored this azzole's directive because it was ALWAYS ignored...it was JETdell that went completely beserk and WAY WAY over the top with this repugnant fine, the besmirching of league icon Kraft and the hatchet job nationally on our coach's character while speciously frobbing the Patriots of a VERY VALUABLE BUSINESS ASSET , their first round pick...he can ROT IN HELL with his secret little Jet agenda for all eternity for all I care.

As a side question - how do you all think Paul Tagliabue would have dealt with this?

I would guess the same way he delt with the salary cap violations with the 49ers, Broncos or Steelers, with discretion and mindful of public relations. I also don't think there would have been a leak from his office every other hour. In the many years Tagliabue was in office, I don't remember a single leaked report, nevermind a tape, out of his office.

He stinks. Too many reasons to list. Hope he's a one-and-done.

I think Goodell's done a good job thus far. Sure, the situation with the Patriots is unfortunate, but he handled it in the manner it ought to have been handled.

With matters outside the Patriots (i.e. Pacman, Vick, etc) he put forth proper punishments to maintain the standard that athletes need to be held to. I think he's done a good job at cleaning up.

When he showed up to the Superbowl and everyone he was with was in Giants gear some of my friends were rubbed the wrong way about it, but the people he were with were assistants and his kids (I'm guessing), all of whom I would imagine live in or around New York, making them Giants fans by default. I don't hold that against him, he was not wearing Giants paraphernalia himself.

If you look at other commissioners of other leagues, namely Selig and Stern, I personally feel Goodell is a much better commissioner. I just flat out don't like Stern for some reason, comes off as a sleezebag to me, and Selig handled the steroids thing terribly and tainted the game shortly after a time when many, including myself were glued to tv sets (the 98 home run chase, for example). Goodell, for now, is the best commissioner within those three sports, IMO.

That's why I voted in his favor. Time will tell how that opinion changes or remains the same.

If he hadn't overreacted to the camera controversy in the first case, we wouldn't even be discussing Roger Goodell now.

He's put the entire integrity of the league in jeopardy because of a disciplinary overreaction. He's an idiot, and he can suck my balls.

If that's what you want, but judging by his overreactions to things so far, he might bite. :D

I don't think he's handling things as well as he should be and I do think he's over his head in this Job. The Patriots needed to be punished for defying the league directive, but he over punished them. As a result, he seems to be overreacting again in the other direction and ignoring other reports of impropriety.

His New York ties may have had a hand in the initial overreaction, but probably not.

I didn't vote as I didn't find an option that suited they way I feel.

he's really messed this up on every level at every turn....he SHOULD have handled this in house and never turned it into the public spectacle that it became...NEVER sgould have given out such a heavy penalty without explaining it all...going forward he shouldn't have said he was going to be so fair about things, for he has demonstrated the opposite totally..ignoring so many other practices that are ubfir..from tampering to piped in audio to the communications blackout over ride that some teams do. ..

My thoughts are very similar, in his rush to judgement he left out a lot of steps, I believe it had something to do with the initial leak to Fox Sports.. so instead of dealing with the leak, he threw out the tapes which only led to more suspicion. By overreacting to this situation he fanned the flames of this whole matter, to the point where it has gotten out of control and now in Specters lap. If he had done a more thorough initial investigation, and thought about the alternatives and consequences much of the hysteria and hyperbole may have been mitigated..

At this point of time, I would be amazed if Goodell and his former employers, the Jets didn't set up the Pats in the first game. I will LMAO when he gets canned.

"handled it in the manner it ought to have been handled"....Are you kidding?? I do NOT see how he could have handled it worse....If this was good...the league will be going down the tubes quite fast.. I do not think Tags would have made as much an issue out of it and handled it "IN HOUSE"...THAT was a big mistake!! And could not have done worse...the most severe penalties to team, individuals involved. THAT was compounded by not explaining ANY of that as to the whys...which only led to many speculations. ANOTHER big mistake. And then there was the leaked tape...funny how his wife works for Fox and it was a Fox reporter that got it... How could that have been handled poorer?? Look at how OTHER issues of pushing the envelope have come up and been ignored by him?? If he REALLY wished to clean up the league why not do it with the same vigor? Never happened..What appearance does it have? That he's blatantly unfair to the Patriots and OBVIOUSLY his NY bias is shading his actions. How could a Commish have done poorer in this??

As a side question - how do you all think Paul Tagliabue would have dealt with this?

In the entire time Tags was in office to you remember a scandal/story that had legs like this. Do you think the whole time he was there no one got in trouble for rule violations/cheating.

OK than Goodell sux and Tags would have handled it better.

Even a dead Pete Rozelle would have handled it better. I don't see how it could have been handled worse.

and now, the NINERS are caught tampering and when one looks at the penalty of what was done...one sees how UNJUST this bozo was with the Patriots....ONLY confirms the absolute worst for him...Had he handed out something a bit close to what happened with the Pats..I think te word "unjust" would NOT have applied...but seeing how this was on teh scale..one can only conclude that he is unjust and vindictive...

When he gets canned, he can always go back to working for the Jets as if he ever stopped.

I won't be there, but will someone give an extra-loud BOO! for me on April 26 when numbnuts walks up to the podium??????
