BRYANT JOINS THE PATS
Posted by Mike Florio on March 20, 2008, 11:11 a.m.

The New England Patriots have begun the process of rebuilding a secondary depleted by free agency by signing cornerback Fernando Bryant.

A league source tells us that Bryant has signed a one-year deal with Pats.

Bryant also had an offer from the Broncos. He was cut last month by the Lions, and has spent nine years in the NFL.

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

this is great, problem solved.

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

With all these cbs, We will not be drafting a corner at seven now!!!!!

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

Kobe Bryant? Cool. We could use some height at the CB position.

I hope he doesn't get upset about not being used for the 3-pointers...

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

For an one year deal, it is worth a shot.

Here is his latest Scout, Inc. report (the one posted in the other thread was a little outdated):

Grade 65

Expert's Take Bryant is a nine-year veteran who played with diminishing skills in 2007. He is an averaged sized defender that relied on his great quickness, speed and instincts to be effective out on an island. Bryant still moves well but has lost a step in coverage to stay in receivers hip pockets. He continues to have solid closing burst and effective transition movement in zone coverage but tends to play to cautiously giving too big a cushion. He has been inconsistent in pure man coverage verse the top speed receivers in the league. He is a willing run support player but isnt a physical tackler and can be ineffective rerouting receivers off the line of scrimmage. Bryant plays with great confidence and instincts as he reads route progressions well and anticipates throws to make plays on the ball. He has good natural reacter and bounced back in 2008 with a solid season after missing time the prior three years. Bryant still has talent but his age is showing and he may be best with an established defensive unit that fields impressive pass rushers.

What DB isn't at their best with an impressive pass rush?

I mean... "Naw coach.... I do better when you don't sack the QB..."

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

That scouting report makes it seem like he chose a team where his skills could be best utilized.

What does this do to the Ty Law negotiations? If anything, put more pressure on Law to be reasonable in expectations from the Pats.

i dont think law will be feeding his family with the pats

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

Lotsa DBs on one year-deals. Some will make the team and be there to groom what figures to be a lot of kids. And most of the older DBs will be gone in 2009. Just doesn't want to rely too much on rookies it seems.

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

This is a great, great signing. In the Pats defense, Bryant is a solid starter. He's also a much better corner than the 2008 version of Ty Law.

wow really?

I think you are probably the most excited person on here..

I like to see it...

would you care to elaborate as to why you think he's going to be a solid starter?
(i really hope you weren't kidding)

i agree, webster, bryant , and sanders are all veteran sevicable, former starters in the league, draft a few studs and we are in good shape, add a harvey or gholston with the 7 pick and ill be happy

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

Does anyone else get the feeling that we're throwing crap at a wall and hoping something sticks?

OK, Ok, I know "name" players aren't everything, but Lewis Sanders, Fernando Bryant, and Jason Webster to replace Asante? Are you serious?

Can we get someone that isn't 30 and on the downside of their career? Webster played one game for the Bills last season. Sanders played for Atlanta (a bottom 5 pass D team) last season, and Bryant played for the WORST pass D in the league last season. Sheesh.

I really would like to see Ty Law in Patriot's uniform again, I really hope he sacrifices a little to join us. I wonder how the Jets negotiations with Law will go now that we have Bryant. Maybe with them backing off he will realize what he is worth.

Very excited about today's signing. Our defense is going to be a beast next year!

Re: Bryant Joins The Pats

I like what there doing, you forget Mike richardson was having a great camp last year until injury he will be back a year stronger.
I have a feeling the Patriots are eyeing Gholston, Groves or a lineman.
I'd love to see the Patriots trade back into the first round after trading down and getting Kenny Phillips.
Now this only makes sense if they truly wanna move Merriweather to cornerback.

I remember people saying similiar things when we got Mike Vrabel, Roman Phifer, Otis Smith, Bobby Hamilton, Anthony Pleasant, Joe Andruzzi, David Patten, Tyrone Poole (at least for one year), etc. When these and other players that the Pats had taken off the scrap heap or never was heap, they were considered useless moves. All the players I mentioned came in with low to no expectations and were key cogs in our Super Bowl runs.

Personally, I would rather have Bryant and groom a rookie to take his place that trade a 2nd and 6th and pay $10 million a year to a DeAngelo Hall.

its called a salary cap,and you build a team bottom up, all these guys give us great depth, the pats couldnt afford samuel, so they have moved on adding qaulity, im sure braynt, webster, or sanders, could of dropped the game clinching interception against the giants too

I disagree that the Pats couldn't afford Samuel. They determined though that to sign Samuel meant that they would have been hamstrung by his contract and would have to shortchange other areas of the team either now or in the future. The Pats believe that as long as they have Brady they would rather be good almost everywhere than be great in certain areas and leave gaping holes in other areas.

basically what you said is the pats couldnt afford samuel,i dont get your point, if they deem hes not worth the money, they cant afford him
