Dorsey would play DE for us. I think he's a phenomenal player, one of the top 3 in the draft, but with Seymour and Warren signed for two and six years respectively, and Green an excellent rotational player, I can't see investing the #7 pick in Dorsey. It's just a very high slot to use on a depth player. Wright and LeKevin can be upgraded as far as talent goes, but we need those cheap salaries to offset some of the bigger ones. If they're bumped off the roster, it will be by another cheap player....day two draft pick.

If we do draft Dorsey at #7, it's probably a sign of the Patriots switching to a 4-3 defense. Which would be odd because we have no MLB on the roster.

Considering that Dorsey is not a good fit for the 3-4 and the fact that the Patriots do NOT have the line backers to play a 4-3, it would be a horrible pick. In fact, if we did pick him and switched to a 4-3, I'd predict the Pats doing no better than 10-6 and missing the play-offs.

Based upon who is left I think you have to take Dorsey. If anything, you now have even more value on your D-Line. And a great D-line could cover up for an ok secondary. This is like my Darren McFadden question, could you pass on him and take a lesser talent? I think Dorsey's value at #7 would be too high pass up. Another thought would be that someone else would want to jump up and scoop Dorsey, so this could give the Patriots possibly more trade options then if McFadden or Ryan fell to #7. There are some lingering concerns over the health of Dorsey, most notably his knee. But, stuff like this comes out every year during the draft. The selection of Dorsey would most hint to some that they would go to a 4-3, but Belichick much rather perfers the 3-4 so I'm not totally sure you would play a 4-3 if they did in fact select Dorsey. So, I think if it comes to Dorsey falling to #7 I think you either pick him, or make a trade. Isn't there a rumor that Parcells is going to take him #1 now?

I don't think there is a choice. If Dorsey is still on the board after pick #4, you spend the next 30 minutes trying to make a trade. I am pretty sure the Pats will probably already have a trade partner lined up prior to the draft in the case Dorsey falls. Same with McFadden. IThere are a LOT of teams right behind the Pats who could use a DT of his stature and the Pats could gain another pick either this year or next by trading down. There are also a lot of talk of Jerry Jones wanting McFadden and I wouldn't be surprised to see him make a trade with the Jets or Pats to get McFadden.

Right now, I think McFadden will fall in the draft at least to us at #7. But, when reality sets in on April 26, McFadden will not get past the Jets pick. I think there is the possibilty that Dorsey falls as well, but I think he will more then likely end up in Atlanta, unless Matt Ryan is still there, but they may still take Dorsey over him any ways. If I had to bet, I believe the most likely person to fall will be Matt Ryan, unless is has a great workout today.

I think Matt Ryan is a product of the media due to a "BORING" draft class....just like Gholston

I'm actually a big Gholston guy and hopes that some how he falls to us come draft day. I have a real bad feeling that he ends up on the Jets though. There is the possibility that the Jets do take Darren McFadden after they have tried to upgrade their offensive line.

Why do you think that? It also implies that you've never seen Ryan play. He's got the talent and the gumption. Its a matter of how he transitions to the pro game. Many people, NOT just the "MEDIA" believe he has what it takes to make it.

One thing I'll say with certainty is that Belichick would never change his fundamental defensive philosophy of over 20 years overnight because of the addition of one player. The base D for this team will remain a 3-4 no matter what happens on draft day. No only are the linemen in the scheme fundamentally different, but so are the LBs. We switch to a 4-3, then we better look into replacing Vrabel too, because that guy is in no way a 4-3 OLB. He's bascially a rush backer in a 3-4, or a glorified Dend. Thomas has enough versatility to probably play anywhere on the field, but he's about the only of the current backers capable of doing that. So, let's just not realistically expect our scheme to change if Dorsey somehow falls to 7. He doesnt seem like a 3-4 lineman anyway, but he certainly wouldnt be able to hold the point anything like Vince does currently. But by adding him and an $8million contract, we may as well write off Vince once his current deal is up, because the line money would be gone. This adding Dorsey concept is a complicated one. It would pretty much be trying to add a square peg to a round hole in alot of ways. He's a 4-3 tackle. And he's probably the best player in the draft. So, I wouldnt worry too much about him falling all the way to 7 anyway.

I will say Matt Ryan may actually be under-rated. I like him alot, yes he does throw too many interceptions to possibly warrant the first pick in the Draft. However, Ryan had quite possibly the worst group of receivers in all of Divison 1 Football. His best weapon was Andre Callender, whom I think will also be a good pro, but Ryan had zero weapons other then a pretty good running back who lead the team in receiving. Matt Ryan is tough, and has the necessary grit to be an excellent quarterback in the NFL. He is terrific in the clutch. He'll be a better pro then Phillip Rivers, and possibly Big Ben.

Vrabel can play the inside and outside just like Thomas. He has a lot better first step as an edge pass rusher, something this team needs.

Sure he can. In a 3-4. I recognize that. My point was that in a 4-3, he's not gonna make a very good backer inside or out. His speed, or lack of it, would really crush his effectiveness in that kindof scheme. He certainly couldnt play MLB in a 4-3. I really love the man's versatility. But there's a reason he was brought from Pittsburgh, where theyve run a 3-4 for years, to NE. He's suited for a specific scheme. In a 4-3, he'd be a small Dend, and getting handled alot. He's definitely not an inside LB in anything other than a 3-4, and that's really not a spot we want to see him playing again.

One of the issues that people are clearly over-looking with the idea of moving to the 4-3 is that Wilfork, Warren and Seymour would all become DTs. Jarvis Green might also end up there as well. So, which of Wilfork, Warren and Seymour do you want sitting on the bench?

Vrabel and Thomas would move to DE leaving 2 holes at OLB. Bruschi doesn't have the speed or agility to be a MLB. One of the holes at OLB could be filled by Woods. The other may or may no be filled by Bruschi. So, that would still leave 4 LBs spots to be filled.

Moving to the 4-3 makes NO SENSE for this team just from a personnel standpoint.

DaBruinz, I've never agreed with you more. Dorsey at #7 is tremendous value to one of the many DT-starved teams in the league. In the unlikely event that he's available, there should plenty of suitors offering packages of picks that will help the Pats more.

Double ditto...

Difficult to be logical with such a ridiculous scenario. But I suppose my initial reaction would be, "Why have I wasted more than half of my life on an obsession called the NFL Draft? And why, does suffering exist?"

Then in round two and day two, I'd be seeking balance in search of that diamond-in-the-rough, steal-of-the-draft-type prospect, and upon selecting him, I'd feel like that short-memory CB who just returned a pick; all is well once again - and in BB we trust...

Not nearly as ridiculous as Wilfork falling to #21, and still being only the second DT taken in the draft that year. Only Harris @14 went before him.

It wasn't exactly a banner year for DTs. And there was a lot of other talent in that draft.
