Not named Richard Seymour.

This is a question for all you old school x's and o's junkies. Who are some of the best 2-gap 3-4 DE/DT's in the history of the game, who maybe never got enough credit because of the lack of "flashy" stats that come along with the job?

Aaron Smith from Pitt?? sorry but just dont know too many great 2gap DE's of all time...

Tony McGee and Julius Adams who played in the 70's for The Patriots were both outstanding.

and 2 gap means? LOL

As a Pats fan you should probably know. ;)

Basically, it is when your defensive lineman is asked to defend 2 gaps (on both sides of the opposing Tackle) in a 3-4 alignment (3 down lineman, 4 linebackers).

i see, so one gap means only defending one side of the opposing lineman?

so how can you be a 3 gap DE???

Sort of. 1-gap DLs "shoot the gap" and are more aggressive in getting into the backfield. 2-gap DLs sit back and occupy space (read: Wilfork). So, in other words, 1-gap DLs attack, while 2-gap DLs defend.

so how can you be a 3 gap DE???

You can't.

Dan hampton of the bears from the 80's. He bonus points for abstaining from the superbowl shuffle since he felt it was too ****y.

Hampton played in a 4-3 though. He would have been ideal for it. And, was a great player. I thought Bears D was more get up-field than read/react. Leonard Marshall - NYG was a helluva 3-4 end. Just ask Joe Montana. I would probably go with Lyle Alzado though. Of course, he was chemically enhanced.

Alzado is a good one. I didn't even think about him. Lyle was probably crazy (and Juiced up) enough to handle 3-gaps. :D

How about Joe Klecko? Supposedly he was strong as an OX. He played all over the Dline too.

I think Klecko moved to NG when they went to the 3-4. Marty Lyons was a good 3-4 de for the Jesters though.

Ted Washington has come the closest until we have a 400 LB DL.
Incidently OL Aaron Gibson formerly of the Cowboys ... 420 lbs.
