My darkhorse trade for the Pats is that they trade the 7th overall pick for a 2nd rounder in 2008 and a 1st in 2009, like they did with Baltimore in 2003. Im not sure how the 2009 draft looks so far, but we know of two strong ILB/MLB entering (Laurinaitis and Maualuga). If they still had the #31 pick, I'd say its more likely, but still think its unlikely as of now.

Laurinitis isn't physical enough for us. But, regardless - I don't see a #2 and 2009 #1 getting it done unless it's with a team expected to suck next year. #21 and Dallas' 2009 #1 next year is more realistic to me - still low on the value chart but not unreasonable.

I like the idea of taking both of ATLs 2s this year and their 1 in 09 for #7...

Freakin' sign me up for that. But with Atlanta clearly rebuilding, I don't know that they go for that. That would be ideal though, and with 3 2s and 2 3s we could easily trade back up in the first round if necessary.

Why are forum members so interested in trading a first round pick

this year for a first round pick next year plus a second round pick

this year? Is the 2008 roster so perfect that the Pats don't

have any holes to fill? The last time I looked the Pats needed

cornerbacks, linebackers, and a tight end.

I can't believe that the Pats would want to wait more than 30 draft

selections before they made their first pick. The Pats under BB have

had pretty good luck with the selections they have made in the first

round but have had a mixed bag with regard to players drafted in

the second and third rounds.

I would rather see them trade down to a team with a choice in the top

fifteen and then combine picks to draft up in later rounds.

Anyway we can get Brooking out of that? They have issues with his salary and he might be a cut.

I agree with everything you said, we need the number 7 pick to fill big holes in the defense. This draft isnt like past years where we could just take the best available player at any position, we need help at both ILB and OLB and at Corner. You cant sacrafice loosing out on top talent this year and hope we get a top ten pick next year for a player the team might night even be able to get or even like for that matter. We have holes to fill and the time is now not next year.

No way, he shouldn't trade it. Then you have no 1st this year to get better with.. A 1st, used wisely can be a huge addition to a team. Especially a #7 pick.

The salary slot and guaranteed $$ between #7 and #37 is about 4-5x the $$....Salary cap issues mandate we only draft for a talent that fits a need....

That might be the dumbest trade in NFL history. You can't keep trading picks. You have to improve your team at some point. You have the 7th pick already, how much higher to you think you'll go?

you could possibly go to the 6th pick.

There is a chance that you could improve to the 5th pick.

If things go well, you may even be able to get the 4th pick.

If you act on things wisely, the 3rd pick is always a possibility.

With a little luck, the Pats could potentially trade into the 2nd pick.

And last but not least, there's a small chance that the New England Patriots could trade with another team and somehow end up finagling the first overall pick.

I just hope that wherever the pats end up from trading first round picks year after year, they end up drafting a Tight End.

Actually, I could see it more working out the other way--i.e., trading #7 for a lower 2008 #1 and a #2 in 2009, although that'd probably only be a drop of three or four picks.

Keegs--heh. :)

The trouble is the 37th player chosen is more apt to be a dud than a

top of the first round draft pick. Adrian Klemm, Bethel Johnson, Marquise

Hill, and Chad Jackson were second round picks.

Given the fact that BB decided to go for it on 4th and 13 in the SB, you never know. He may throw the dice on those odds.

Why the condemnation of Chad Jackson already? He had a couple of good games in his rookie year but fought injuries, and last year he was fighting for passes amoung names like Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Jabar Gaffney, Donte Stallworth, Kevin Faulk, Benjamin Watson, and (sometimes) Kyle Brady. AND he was still recovering from a torn ACL.

I know he hasn't lit the world on fire yet, but let's give him a full training camp in a year that is NOT his rookie year before we compare him to Bethel Johnson. It's just like all the "Maroney is made of GLASS" and "It's game 3, Meriweather must be a BUST" talk we went through all season.

It's tough to risk the No. 7. It's goingto be tough to improve on that, unless the trade is with Atlanta, and maybe the Raiders. You'd basically have to hope the team you trade with goes 5-11, 6-10 at the best.

I think if someone offers a mid first round pick and a first next year for #7 there will be a lot of TV's flying out the window...

Mine won't, since it'd likely save the Pats millions and still net them a player they want.

If they traded out of the first round entirely, though, then my TV or laptop might be a goner. :)

One trade I could definitely see happening would involve a move down somewhere in the 20ish range, and ADDITIONALLY picking up that team's #1 in '09. So, just speaking hypothetically, we make the trade with the 'Skins at 21. They'd get our 7th overall, we'd snag their 21 and then add their top pick next year. And as we all know, Washington, or many teams for that matter, could easily revert from a 9-win wildcard team in '07 to a 5-win, top 10 picking cellar dwellar in '08. Considering that Gholston and Long will very likely be gone when we pick at 7, and that 7th pick is going to draw a HUGE contract, Id be all for making a move down in that lower part of the 1st round and find that CB to replace Samuel. And sit on that additional #1 and see what happens.

But as far as making a straight trade of the 7th pick this year only for a #1 next, dont really see that happenin'.

I feel like we would need a team's first this year rather than their second, unless it was in addition to the second and next year's first rounder.
