why we wont be taking a CB at #7..

Last year Laron Landry signed a 5 year 41.5 mil dollar contract as the #6 pick.

This year Asante Samuel signed a 6 year 57 mil dollar deal as a free agent.

If the Patriots dont want to pay Asante who has proven himself in the Pats system why would they want to pay an unproven rookie almost the same money?? I would be SHOCKED if they took a CB with the #7 pick, it makes no sense to let a proven vet leave for $$ reasons then sign a rookie to a similiar contract at the same position.

I dont think BB values CB as a position that should take up a significant portion of cap space, esp in our zone schemes. CB is a much more important position under a scheme that relies on a press/man scheme.

I think the only positions worth picking very high in the top of the draft ( due to contracts ) are LT, QB, a STUD DL or a STUD OLB. If we are going to keep our pick I want to grab a freak athlete ( Gholston, Long etc ) players that you can never get in later rounds.

I agree 100%. I'll flip if we take a CB at #7. It would make no sense. CB is a lower priority than LB, and maybe even OL, as far as I'm concerned.

My .02 cents: if Gholston's not there, you take Clady. If Clady's not there, you try and trade for two picks in this draft. If you can't do that, you trade down and out into 09. I just don't see BB/Pioli forking over that kind of money to a CB, when they can get a good zone corner in rounds 2 or 3.

I think Clady is looking likely right now....whether as an LT or RT. He'll replace either Kaczur or Neal in the starting lineup.

If Clady is gone and they can't move down, it could well be Groves.

I've liked everything I've seen and or read on Groves, but isn't he a bit of a reach at 7? Don't get me wrong, I'd be much happier seeing us come away with Groves at 7 then any CB, but still, I'd call that a worst case scenario - albeit an acceptable one - if we had to take Groves at 7.

Clady at 7 is what I'm feeling. Whether he's on the left or right, he might very well make our offense flat-out unstoppable, which is what we wrongly thought it was pre-Super Bowl.

Very good observation on Clady! DryHeat. Actually, Great observation. The most important player on this team must be protected. Have you heard BB's commentary on that very thing? Clady (1 of the 7).

Before you start throwing out the numbers, you might want to check how much of that "41.5" million was incentive clauses and escalators. For example, quite a bit of the 5 year/40.5 million deal that Adrian Peterson signed was in escalators. One escalator was $1 million each year if he got 2000 yards as a rookie. Another $1million escalator was for getting 20+ tds as a rookie. There is $8 million that Peterson won't see. So his 5 year/40.5 million contract dropped to a 5 year/32.5 million contract. And its probably going to go down more.

I totally agree. What I've heard BB talk about is how hard it is to find large athletic players. If you're not taking one of those guys in the top ten you're not getting good value for your pick. I would be shocked if the Pats took a CB at #7. If they really wanted a CB they'd trade down. Big, physical bada$$e$ only at #7, be it an OLB or a T.

But i really can't wait for the months and months of crying that we didn't take Rogers-Cromartie.

Theres no way the Pats keep the #7 and draft CB, when there are at least 3 CB's (Talib, McKelvin, DRC) who they could pick from in the mid to late teens to a much smaller contract. If they stay at #7 it is for unique prospect that is only likely to be available there and then.
