That's become the rallying cry around here, but before the recent hype surrounding DRC I was absolutely convinced that Talib was the best cornerback in this draft. I'm not so sure that's still not the case, but I think both will be very good.

Honestly, with the wood so many people around here seem to have for DRC, I would prefer that the Patriots just pick him so I don't have to listen to people whine for months afterward.

Not a nock on DRC, but I am wary of anyone's stock that rises that quickly after the games are done playing. When the college season ended I believe he was a low 1 even a 2 and now he has been rising fast and why? That doesn't mean they aren't right just that I am wary.

By the way, everything midwestpatsfan just said about Talib is what has been said about Cromartie. The difference is Talib at least played in the Big XII... DRC played in the Ohio Valley.

To be fair, he said he wanted to trade out of the spot. Matt Ryan was still on the board so I don't think the Pats would have any trouble doing exactly that if this particular scenario played out.

I've never seen him play live, so I'm sure you know much better than I do. Let me ask you this though: You have just named a handful of important CB skills that you feel he is terrible at. So what is it, in your opinion, that has NFL scouts ranking him as one of the top CBs in the draft, while you seem to think he's a scrub?

I'm not being sarcastic, I'm honestly asking.

I think it just happens that way with the small school kids sometimes. I doubt Roethlisberger was considered a near top 10 pick before the combine or closer to the draft. Same with DeMarcus Ware. Cromartie just played in 'Nowheresville' America. He didnt get seen. Probably didnt get pushed by the level of competition he needed to see. Im sure he got a bit lazy from time to time thinking he was just head and shoulders above his competition. But the kid either has the skills or he doesnt. And if we were to actually make a CB pick that high, Id either want it to be Cromartie or Mike Jenkins. Talib just looked clumsy at the combine to me with some of his footwork, and watching the replay of the kid from Missouri, who btw ran a 4.5 at the combine, just run away from him on a TD catch, no way Im even considering Talib that high. You take elite skill that high when you get a chance. Seymour was elite skill - size and power. Cromartie absolutely has elite speed. He'd be the fastest guy on this team wearing flip flops.

Cromartie has had a Combines bounce that rivals Mike Mamula. This guy wasn't even in the first round in many mock drafts prior to the Combines. If we go CB, I think McKelvin is the better choice.

You bring up a good point, I was saying I am wary of guys who climb so fast after the games are played. But I am even more wary of guys who fall so quick like Talib has. He was a top ten pick easy a few months ago and now I have seen him fall to the bottom of the 1st and even the second.

I have the answer to your question. First off, the top end talent at CB is not great this year, DRC and Mckelvon both played in smaller conferences against poor competition, Flowers just ran slower than me in the 40, so there is no one who can really claim that top spot.
Talib does have some positives that scouts really love and that is size (6'1") and straight line speed.
He is not a scrub, but to me he is more of a end of 1st, top of 2nd type of corner. I think he plays with pretty good instincts, but what I saw was a guy who did not want to make a tackle if he did not have to and I saw him get burned far to much for a guy who people are putting in the top half of this draft.

The difference between the names you just spouted off and Cromartie is that they were productive on the DI level. Cromartie lacks numbers at the DI-AA level (or FCS, whatever it's called now), and a number of scouts have commented on concerns over his lack of coachability and the fact that he was burned alarmingly often at such a low level of competition. He's fast and athletic, but it takes more than that to be a football player, especially one worthy of a top-10 overall pick. Cromartie is a gamble amongst gambles. It's either home run or bust, and I think with this type of player, the high probability lies on the bust side (look at Andre Woolfolk, a similarly raw athletic talent who was out of football within 3 years of being taken in the 1st round who had at least played at Oklahoma). Not what you're looking for in the top 10, and not with a team who has a glaring hole in the secondary that needs to be filled right now.

Im not completey certain 23, and I dont know if they were actually 'mocking' it up, but I think hypothetically Reiss was assuming Gholston was gonna be gone. Atleast Id assume so. But I'll look into that to see if its the case. Id think if VG were still on the board, Reiss would probably have taken him. VG is being mocked extremely high right now. Most places dont see him falling past the Jets at this point.
