our needs are ILB, and CB, with a lesser need at OLB...therefore...this is the plan

trade down with Chicago or Carolina

Rd 1-14. Groves
Rd 2-44. Cason
Rd 2-62. Chris Johnson
Rd 3-69. Jon Goff
Rd 3-94. Best available CB
Rd 4-126. Anything really, maybe another CB, or the TE, or a WR, or a NT
Rd 5-158. Traded for Seward

we get exceptional OLB and CB, and an amazing RB (which we dont need, but have you seen the kids highlights?), the ILB we despertely need, and hes good too, and another CB in the first day...so hes gonna be pretty good

and we leave the first day of the draft covering our biggest needs by gettting
1 OLB
1 ILB
2 CB's
1 RB

I really like this draft, and not just because of the Johnson pick. Groves and Cason seem like 2 good players.

I could certainly live with it. Given a similar trade down, I'd prefer:

Leodis McKelvin
Cliff Avril
Patrick Lee
Jonathan Goff (or Erin Henderson)
Quentin Demps
Atybah Rubin
Owen Schmitt

And with the sixth and seventh picks, I'd nab two of Jeremy Zuttah, Gary Barnidge, Sam Kellar, Thomas Brown, Paul Hubbard, Trevor Scott, Hilee Taylor, Jonathan Wilhite, Jonathan Zenon, Jameel McClain, and Gary Guyton.

Dryheat, you would take 2 CBs that early and no OL?? I like Avril, I think there are 4/5 pass rushers in this draft and we need one of em.(Long,Gholston,Groves,Harvey,Avril). Why would you take 2 CBs AND Demps?? Cant Demps play both CB and S?

Right now, given the same trade I think I would take:

1 Groves
2a best avail G/T combo guy(would love a trade UP for Albert)
2b best avail CB(Terrell USC?)--or given up to trade for Albert
3a Bryant
3b Woodyard(you will say Demps)
4 best avail wr/KR
The rest are cannon fodder, not much point of hoping.

I think our ILB is Seward, so not much sense in drafting one, sign Spikes!

Yo ALP, don't let these guys talk you down. I would love that draft. Groves, Cason and Goff. That just made my first day. Excellent work!

yea, i dont know how lickly it is that that draft actually happens....but if it does....man would i be happy...

i think groves will provide excellent pass rush which we lacked last year...

i think Goff will be tutuored and groomed this season, and play in a reserve role...with seward and bruschi taking up the middle primarily, on running situations, and with seward and thomas taking up the middle on passing downs, with groves replacing thomas on the outside when thomas plays ILB...

and then we would have the CB to replace asante in Cason, and either our other CB that we draft or a FA will take gay's spot...and our defense looks scary good...

and the RB begins replacement of faulk (and then some)

thanks for your optimism

if goff will start a reliever Thomas will be ILB?

I have a slight problem with taking a guy like C Johnson or D Jackson who figures to be a kick return specialist. Well, not a problem per se, but I don't think we have the roster space to do it on the gameday 46. That's why I lean towards guys like Demps who can contribute in other ways, like the nickel defense. Other options are McKelvin and Tracey Porter.

In reality, is Chris Johnson ever going to play over a healthy Faulk, or possibly even Evans? No, and there'll be a Chris Johnson in the draft next year. Is Dexter Jackson going to see any time ahead of Moss, Gaffney, Welker, Chad Jackson, and Watson? Probably not, so it's hard to justify activating them for a game.

There are blazing fast and eel-slippery guys in the draft every year. Next year there will be a 4.25 guy in the draft that everybody falls in love with. There's no need to draft a replacement for Faulk, for example, until Faulk shows signs of deteriorating. Clearly, that's not happening yet.

I like Dexter Jackson, and the Patriots have shown some interest in him as well, but they've also shown some interest in Darius Reynaud, who should be available in the later rounds of the draft.

that is a good point, but maybe we do not keep eckel? he trule doesnt bring much to the table....i understand BB and why Eckel is still on the team, but if BB actually did what was best for the team this time, he would draft Johnson, and let Eckel walk

we can always find space remember, troy brown was active last yr, so was donte stallworth....we have spots that can be filled

I think that clearly these guys have to bring something else to the dance. Probably something to add value to the covergae units.

They just MIGHT bring more to the table,STs,etc. But first you have to get them here. Beyond rd 3 you are talking 1 dimensional players anyways, projects. This team tried HARD to find room on the field for Tony Gaiter remember?? It didnt happen, and not every Eckel has naked pictures of BB so they can be upgraded easily. One or 2 injuries and the guy is on the field...look at the Packers RB Grant for example. I would be ALOT happier with a guy like Johnson as my 3rd string back than Eckel because of that upside.
Maybe Jackson is the next Josh Cribbs? Guys that play on ALL of the STs are very important, more important than having a roster spot for say PAXTON....I mean, cant we find ANYONE ELSE on the roster to do this and save us a spot? Hochstien cant practice this?? I never saw the need, especially on this team.
And yes, there are guys like this in every draft, but Morris is likely gone next year and picking 2 RBs in the same draft isnt such a fantastic idea. Looking at Morris,Faulk,Maroney it would seem likely that in 3-4 years we have completely new RBs on this team, right?

I used NFL Scout.com as my source for the ranking of players. They are updating their rankings as more info becomes available and players that wer at pick #94 last week are on either side of that selection (some higher some lower).

These are the projected Patriots selections using adamjt13's projected compensatory awards.

#7 - traded for #14 and #44 (Matt Ryan may be available at #7 and both Carolina and Chicago would need to jump ahead of Baltimore to get one of the two top QB's.)

#14 - Dominique Rogers-Cromartie CB Tenn ST - he is raw and may take a year or two to pick up the system, but the upside is way too high on this guy to let him pass

#44 - Chris Johnson RB East Carolina - I disagree with the premise that we shouldn't get a backup player for the role Kevin Faulk has with the team. Faulk is no spring chicken anymore.

#62 - Dexter Jackson WR Appalachian St - He will return kicks, but I see him as a game breaker as a WR.

#69 - Shawn Crable OLB Michigan - prototypical size for an OLB in the 3-4.

#94 - Jonathan Goff ILB Vanderbilt - He wasn't on my radar screen until I kept seing his name pop up here. I think it was cause he played at Vandy. Love everything I have seen, read about him since.

#128 - Martin Rucker TE Missouri - You know BB is going to take a TE (This pick could be swapped for ILB Adam Seward)

#168 - Caleb Campbell SS Army - Huge size for a SS. he has a military committment which should scare off most teams. We can afford to wait.

#202 - Mike Dragosavich P North Dakota St - WE need a punter badly. The kid can kick in bad weather too.

#239 - MacKenzy Bernadeau OG Bentley - Mike Mayock has him in his top 5 at OG. Project from a local school that will spend time in the Dante Scarnecchia school for O Linemen (practice squad).

I like your Mock, but I would rather have Tom Zibkowski as my safety. I think Shawn Crable would be an excellent selection for a 3-4 LB.

Why wouldn't the Patriots, who regularly dress 5 WR and were dressing 6 WRs on game day dress someone like Dexter Jackson who would keep Hobbs, Maroney and Welker from having to do return duty?

Jackson gives the Patriots an option should any one of Moss, Gaffney, Welker, or Chad Jackson get hurt. And its not hard justifying it when you consider that you risk a starting CB or your starting RB otherwise.

Besides, Jackson could also be viewed as a replacement for Willie Andrews.

As for Johnson, I could see the Pats drafting him if Morris wasn't healthy and had to be pupped.

Also, please keep in mind that BB makes an effort to draft players 1 year prior to actually needing them. Yes, there have been injury instances that have forced those players into game situations, but, primarily, he attempts to do that. The only pick I can think of that it wasn't the case is Mankins.

Ideal draft:
1. Gholston
2a. Cason
2b. E. bennet
3. Goff

could care less after that

Chris Johnson does catch the ball out of the backfield alot and can line up as a slot receiver. It isn't hard to see his versatility being tapped. You can lineup with an FB and Johnson in the backfield in a three-wide set and motion Johnson out to the slot. Leave the FB in to block and I'm sure you have a coverage mismatch on Johnson.

While I don't think the numbers game precludes the pick of Chris Johnson, I do think his projection to go in the second round does. I'd be more interested if he was available late in the third or fourth.

Ideal draft:
1. Gholston

2b. E. bennet
3. Goff

what position does E. bennet play, first time i see the name

WR - Vandy. Earl Bennett.

Ideal draft:

I don't believe that Bennett actually brings something to the table that the Pats don't already have better of in their receiving corps. Most people, when talking about adding a WR, are talking about adding a return specialist who also happens to have great hands and runs damn good routes (Jackson).

While Bennett has the hands and route part, he's not quick. He seems more like a Donte Stallworth, but better hands. We don't need that.
