Blocking TE

I've been reading up on possibly the weakest TE group I've ever seen and notice not a lot of these guys are known for their blocking. Most of the day 1 guys are pass catching TEs, and it's possible the pats wouldn't take a TE until day 2. Makes me wonder why they cut Kyle Brady.

One TE that intrigues me is Martellus Bennett. Coming in as a basketball player he was asked to improve his blocking to suit the Texas A&M running style offense. He has grown his blocking fundamentals and with his basketball background could become a better pass catcher. Though undersized at 250, he has the potential. i'm still not convinced on anyone else coming in and taking over for Brady. I might start looking at some OL to TE conversion projects

Because BB has realized that a one dimensional TE limits what he can do offensively.

The most complete pass catching and blocking TE is Carlson of Notre Dame, however he is extremely slow and even a fire hydrant could handle Carlson 1 on 1 in coverage.

Cottham is a walking banana (he bruises that easily). And Stevens of Cal couldn't catch something even if he drank all the virus bottles at the CDC in Atlanta.

Maybe BB goes with 2 TE's in 2008 and uses Britt, Hochstien or O'Callghan as the short yardage drive blocking TE, in order to keep 6 or 7 WRs on the roster.

Outside of Stevens and maybe Davis, which one of your group even has a clue about how to line up and drive block someone off the ball.

My daughter goes to U. of Cincinnati and I have caught a few football games down there. The team was pretty good this year (made it to a minor bowl game). Anyway, they have this TE/FB named Doug Jones. He is not very highly rated in the draft reviews but he has looked good whenever I saw him He also played in a post season all star game. Jones is 6-3, 275. He is a little slow but has great hands and is one heck of a blocker. He might be a good dark horse second day pick.

I'm beginning to think that the Patriots continue with their (low)risk-(high)reward approach. ...

I think they bring in more veteran help at both CB and LB, in particular, CB Lito Shepherd and LB Jason Taylor. I think they trade down once to Philly for Shepherd, then again to Miami at the top of round two for Jason Taylor.

With those positions filled, now the Patriots can continue with their current belief that the game has shifted to Offense. Therefore, their top two picks are WR Devin Thomas, replacing Stallworth, and TE Kellen Davis, replacing Kyle Brady. In fact, I'll go one step further and say the TE is picked first.

I don't think this post is based in reality but would love it if it happened. A haul like this would be unreal.

Although I would rather see another safety and an O Lineman drafted instead of Thomas and Davis... but honestly they could draft 7 punters if they landed Taylor and Shepherd it would still be a killer draft.

Yes I probably could, I do not think this is a strong TE class. Probably it is worse than last year's class.

However I went back and watched 2 TExas A&M games that I had taped during the season and it occurred to me that Bennett is a little better blocker than I gave him credit for. He can sink his hips a little and flatten out the back and get after it with a bit more passion than I expected.

He seems to have a knack for chipping DE"s and fading into the flat before the LB can get there.

I guy like that could be useful in our offense.
