Re: Pats show a little interest in Pac man?

I don't really want him here, but this is still a good example that talented players in certain circumstances can be had in a low risk, high reward "prove it" one year contract.

Now, for those of you who were aghast that Belichick didn't Franchise Moss, ask yourself how many players would agree to play for the Patriots on a one-year prove it contract knowing that if they did well, they'd likely be franchised too?

The answer of course is "none".

So a franchise tag for Moss would have been the same as closing the door to any type of similar one year signing in the future.

I actually wouldn't be at all surprised if Moss had a "gentleman's" agreement with the Pats when he redid his contract, that the Pats wouldn't tag him.

As per the article link below. The Pats have shown a little interest. I would consider it for a 1 year prove it deal with absolutely no dead money charges to the salary cap should it not work out (ie. no signing bonus). If any team is going to rehabilitate this clown it is the Pats.

Absolutly not, Undermines everything the Patriots represent. Maybe he should be allowed to play again when that strip club bouncer fully recovers from the bullet shot and can walk again.

On the face of it, looking back, I wouldn't be surprised.

But the deal wasn't made "looking back." It was made with a proven malcontent, on a terrible team, who had previously taken a dump on his pro bowl QB a time or two in Minnesota.

At the time he had "lost a step", he had caught 7 TDs and 1400 yards worth over two seasons, and he was a high risk prospect on and off the field. Was he the "old" Randy, or "Raiders Randy"?

The whole contract was made to indemnify the Pats from the risk - but no mistake they were rooting for the kid.

Either way I think they did exactly what they should have done. You can franchise a kid looking forward to a great career... but if you get a guy like RM on board, you'll likely affect on-field play by franchising him, thus defeating the purpose (and at a high pay grade.)

I think the "gentleman's agreement" evolved over the season. The Pats aren't stupid, and love Moss; Moss isn't stupid, and loves winning.

But the Randy they were looking at in April 07? They knew nothing.

So did Dillon and Moss. But you are right, I forgot about the guy with the bullet wound. Not trying to justify it, was it Pac man that pulled the trigger? I don't believe it was.

The Patriots represent a football team I root for, nothing more and nothing less. If OJ Simpson was in his prime as the best RB in NFL history, I'd take him on the Patriots despite the obvious. If Pacman is capable of playing to the level of unbridled potential he showed coming out of West Virginia and flashed with the Titans, I'd want him here in an instant, especially with a zero-risk contract.

As for the dead bouncer, it was one of Pacman's entourage, not him, who pulled the trigger, though he bears responsibility for creating the situation. Either way, that has no bearing on his football talent. If you're looking at football players as anything more than football players, you need to be examined.

It's even beyond a gentleman's agreement (and I assume you're talking about re-doing his contract last year, not this year) as the Patriots wouldn't really need to enter into a "gentleman's agreement" not to destroy their ability to attract guys in Moss' situation in the future.

It'd be like saying "we agree not to hamstring our own efforts to sign short term talented free agents in the future" - but of course that didn't stop a huge number of fans for questioning whether Belichick had gone temporarilly insane for not tagging Moss.

Well, 72 hours of free agency had passed. That's a lot of time with the sky around your ankles.

Re: Pats show a little interest in Pac man?

I don't buy it. This guy is poison. And Mr. and Mrs. Kraft have a brand that they are trying to market. No way that they would allow this guy on the team, even if it was something BB or Pioli wanted.

The risk/reward factors for Moss and Dillon were much higher than with this guy.

Not if you remember how good he was in college.

Re: Pats show a little interest in Pac man?

Moss and Dillon had football related character issues, for the most part (except that running over the cop by Moss). Pacman has shown a deeper character flaw...not knowing right from wrong as a part of his core beliefs. I don't think he can be reformed. No way I want that dude on the Pats, I don't want any more negative vibes next season. It would be nice to focus on football once again.

Here's Florio's take at PFT:

Our guess is that someone is puffing a bit in the hopes of driving up the level of compensation that the Titans get for the sixth overall pick in the 2005 draft. Miami V.P. of football operations Bill Parcells has said that he doesn't want "thugs and hoodlums," and Jones (in our opinion) is both. And if the Patriots expressed "some level if interest" in Jones, the specific level of interest likely was "hardly any.

Then, we wouldn't be surprised to learn that Parcells and his son-in-law, Pats V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli, have agreed to feign interest in Jones in the hopes that Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum would feel compelled to plunge into the bidding for a guy who would then contribute to a potential internal collapse of the franchise.

Moss was one thing. A proven talent who was carrying an unfair reputation for on-the-field antics and weed, and just needed a chance to perform in an environment where people had his back.

Pacman Jones is a whole different can of worms. Involvement in nightclub shootings, drug use, drug deals, vandalism, assault, public intoxication, gambling. I mean, his drug dealer said he needed to slow down and refocus on football.

His reputation is well-earned, and his past behavior makes him an extreme liability to take on.

Re: Pats show a little interest in Pac man?

How do you know he would even want to come here on a 1 yr deal. The strip clubs in the northeast are no where near the level of the clubs in Charlotte, Miami, San Diego and Dallas Ft Worth (and of course Vegas, but with no NFL franchise unfortunately). Pacman probably doesn't even leave for the clubs until 2 or 3 AM which is two hours after final call in Boston in the first place.

No go.

Re: Pats show a little interest in Pac man?

If Jones were to come out and say he was saved by God and wanted to redeem himself, then maybe I would be interested.

The man obviously needs a lot of help, but I would need him to take the first few steps before I would step up. In all honesty, PacMan needs a mentor like Harrison to get his life together, but you can only help those that want to be helped.

Sure - but that doesn't change the fact that people were advocating that Belichick should give up his credibility in dealing with similar free agents in the future to FORCE Moss to play here one more year.

Everyone knows that Moss came here on a one year contract in an effort to leverage that into a long term contract with a big guranteed payday. Other players could see that, other teams could see that - and presumably most fans would have understood that too.

The LAST thing Moss would have wanted after a record breaking year was to be FORCED to play a another one year contract. That's the last thing any player in the NFL would have wanted and they all would have taken careful note of that, avoiding the Patriots should they ever be in a similar situation

Whether or not there was a gentleman's agreement is almost irrelevant.

Re: Pats show a little interest in Pac man?

Pac man scares me. He's an incredible talent and I would love that kind of TALENT on the team, but I agree with most of you that he has deeper issues that are cause for serious concern. If BB and Krafty say that he'll be ok on the team and offer him the one year deal...then I go with what they do and say. However, I don't think that will happen and nor do I personally want it to. He is a thug and a very sad situation. This man has everything, yet is willing to blow it all because of the lifestyle he wants to live. That's a huge red flag. I don't think it's about football for him, and I don't think that just because he comes to the Pats he will change. You can't compare Moss and Dillion to Pacman. Pacman is a criminal and can't seem to walk out this front door without being arrested. Pac is young and I hope for his sake, he's able to change his ways. Last thing I want is Pac and his posse coming up to NE and starting trouble and shooting people. Just what we need.

Re: Pats show a little interest in Pac man?

Let's not forget that Pac Man is suspended until at least July, with reinstatement not a gaurentee. I love the concept of bringing in risky types like Moss or Dillon in hopes of rejuvinating their career, and the fantasy of a secondary of Pacman Jones, Ty Law, Ellis Hobbs and a day 1 pick indeed makes my mouth water, but I just don't see it.

Pacman winds up in Dallas, IMO.

Re: Pats show a little interest in Pac man?

Hell yeah!

Amazing talent. Want, want, want.
