The Patriots announced the signing of CB Lewis Sanders today.

A bit from the team's press release:

Lewis Sanders, 29, is a veteran of eight NFL seasons with the Cleveland Browns (2000-2004), Houston Texans (2005-06) and Atlanta Falcons (2007). The 6-foot-1-inch, 210-pound cornerback has played in 87 career games with 25 starts and has recorded 172 career tackles (137 solo), one sack, five interceptions for 90 yards, 31 passes defensed, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries, while also totaling 51 special teams tackles.

Last season with Atlanta, Sanders played in 14 games with six starts after being signed by the Falcons as an unrestricted free agent on March 7, 2007. He recorded 32 tackles (28 solo) and two passes defensed before being placed on the reserve/injured list with a chest injury on Dec. 17, 2007. He was released by the Falcons on Feb. 15, 2008.

The team also officially announced the signing of S Tank Williams.

6'1", 210. Better than 5'9, right?

Re: CB Lewis Sanders signed.

Last season with Atlanta, thats interesting.

Re: CB Lewis Sanders signed.

some height!! yay!!

In all seriousness, It really sucks that we lost that first round pick. We could have possibly picked up Gholston (or someone similar) AND a stud CB. Well, the draft is deep in CBs, so we should be able to pick up a decent one. But still....what could have been....

Re: CB Lewis Sanders signed.

With only 6 starts.....

Well, he did have DeAngelo Hall and Chris Houstan ahead of him, and many people on this board love those two guys and want them on this team, so he can't be that bad...

Re: CB Lewis Sanders signed.

Looks like we'll be going into draft day with JAGs filling up our CB spots. In all honesty, it wouldn't be the end of the world if we had JAGS filling up the CB spots for the season. We've won a superbowl that way before.

(So have the Giants!)

Re: CB Lewis Sanders signed.

Training camp competition is going to be intense at the CB position.

Re: CB Lewis Sanders signed.

Get as many experienced defensive backs as possible and let them

compete for roster spots. Also, draft a couple of cornerbacks and

develop them.

Re: CB Lewis Sanders signed.

I'm gonna go on the record here and say that Lewis Sanders sucks. I've seen him play; he is bad. He is one player who definetly they are gonna see if Capers can turn his career around. But I expect him to be cut. I hope I'm wrong and he performs.

My thoughts exactly. Let 'em slug it out in camp. We're bound to come away with one or two good ones to complement Hobbs.

Are we doing this to muscle up Brandon Merriweather into thinking he's no gimmee for week 1 at corner?

capers coached him in Houston.

Well then let's see if he can do something in training camp. Hope he does well.

Re: CB Lewis Sanders signed.

But the Giants have a hell of a pass rush.

Right.

Which is why our defensive money needs to be tied up in front-7 depth, not on CBs.

Well Capers has coached him before so apparently he didn't have much negative to say about him.

EDIT: Nevermind, Remix got it.

The Pats scheme for the front 7 is more gap control, less attack-style. Perhaps this will change when we draft Big Vernon. With Vrabel, Vernon, Thomas, Seymour and Green coming after the QB we could have a ferocious rush.

Hobbs is our stud CB...I repeat...Hobbs is our stud CB....doooooooooooom

Do you know what team was 2nd in the league in sacks after the Giants last season? I'd give you a hint but I bet you already know the answer.

Just because our 3-4 is designed to stop the run first doesn't mean we don't pass-rush, or focus on good pass-rushing technique as a significant part of the game.
