An option for the Pats? Certainly would bring a bit of depth outside, but has been average lately. My sense is that they will wait for the draft.

Eagles released LB Takeo Spikes.

This is a sudden change from their previous public stance that Spikes would return. The former Bengal and Bill is recovering from torn rotator cuff surgery and has been an average player since tearing his Achilles a few years back. Omar Gaither could move to the outside now.

Re: Another possible FA LB: Takeo Spikes Cut

I've heard some speculate that he could move inside in a 3-4. He is pretty stout.

EAGLES CUT SPIKES

When we mentioned on Saturday that Eagles linebacker Takeo Spikes wasn't on the depth chart any longer and inferred that this could be a sign that the Eagles might be dumping him at some point in the future, Eagles web guy Dave Sparado called us "absurd" and "stupid" and "incontinent." (Okay, we're exaggerating. He didn't call us stupid.)

Regardless, Spikes is now no longer an Eagle.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network and our friends at WIP radio in Philly, Spikes have been cut.

The move creates an immediate $5 million in cap space.

Spikes was traded with quarterback Kelly Holcomb and a late-round pick from the Bills to the Eagles in 2007 for defensive tackle Darwin Walker, who eventually was traded to the Bears. None of the three players currently is under contract with any NFL team.

No chance.

Re: Another possible FA LB: Takeo Spikes Cut

Does this guy really have anything left? If so, he would be a great addition inside. The guy is massive.

Update: I just checked out his stats and he played every game. So durability shouldn't be an issue. At 32, I say give him a shot.

Bring Him In

Re: Takeo Spikes Cut

i believe we haver one starting ILB for next year with spikes

Re: Another possible FA LB: Takeo Spikes Cut

Would be a classic BB signing. Vet LB with nothing left in the tank, given up for dead, etc.

Re: Another possible FA LB: Takeo Spikes Cut

Not really surprised by the cut, the eagles just signed Asante to a 10 million dollar deal. Although aging, I say it is bring him in but not more than 3 mill a year.

I agree, seeing that we had Seau playing LB, this move would not be far fetched at all.

Re: Another possible FA LB: Takeo Spikes Cut

If he can play, health-wise, I'd definitely bring him in. It does seem a little fishy, given the Eagles are a pretty smart team, personnel-wise, and they don't want him.

Re: Another possible FA LB: Takeo Spikes Cut

I've always like Spikes - bring him in for a look see for a cap friendly deal. I'd take him over Morgan.

Re: Another possible FA LB: Takeo Spikes Cut

Can he play 3-4 ILB, and does he have anything left in the tank? Maybe look him over in a tryout first.

I think some folks are getting alittle too enamored with "The Names". Think young, more athletic, speedier, with some experience and some versatility. Remember the veterans at the LB position who can teach the youngster. Old LB's on the downside might be the wrong way people are looking.

So when speculating about potential LBs we should think in the 180 degree exact opposite of how Belichick likes to approach the position?

Got it!

Re: Another possible FA LB: Takeo Spikes Cut

Radio guys here in Philly spoke with Spikes about a week or so ago and he said the Eagles asked him to take a pay cut down to $2 million from the $5million he was due. Spikes refused, and he was released. Spikes is actually going to be on WIP 610 in Philly today. Howard Eskin from WIP mentioned Spikes could sign with the Patriots as an ILB, don't know how valid those comments are.

It would take some time before a rookie LB would be able to make the kind of impact Spikes would make immediately. Spikes although might be getting older, he still can play and has more experience and football IQ than any rookie LB could possibly have his first year.

I think they will take a CB high in the draft, and maybe LB 2nd or 3rd rou

nd. From what I have heard so far, the LB class this year is not that great.

I don't think it would be that bad a deal if the Pats could sign him from between 3-4 mill.
