IMO, a better way of saying this is the salaries of the players with the 51 highest cap numbers are counted against the cap while the other salaries are not. That is, the prorated signing bonus money of the 52nd player does count against the cap.

ohhhhh...thx for that --- I had been completely misunderstanding it.
I was reading it as 51 highest cap values.

You're figure seems more reasonable to me but I was just reporting what Schefter said on NFL Network.

With all the FA activity to report, I'm not surprised that Schefter may have erred with one of the signings, esp. a relatively insignificant one such as this.

Bump...so we're somewhere in the range of 6-8 mill under I'm guessing...is that enough to sign (for instance) Seward, Law, 7th pick in the draft and other draftees?

To put it bluntly, YES. Its plenty.

Also, the rookies beyond the 2nd round, tend to fall below the top 51 ANYWAYS, so their contracts don't count towards the cap until AFTER the cuts have been made. Only their signing bonuses count.

The 7th overall, if the Pats keep that pick, would count in the 2.7 million range or so.

I don't see Ty Law getting another big payday. I'd be surprised if the Pats offered more than 1 mill a year.

Seward is the wild card.

I won't claim to be a cap expert, but we had $22 mill in cap space on 2-29 according to Bob Kraft.

Through my rough estimates, I believe we still have about $10.5 million under the cap. I realize this doesn't correspond with "Miguel", but I don't think Miguel had the Cap at exactly under $22 mill when Kraft made that statement.

WAR PATRIOTS!

It was Jonathan Kraft and he gave the number on 2/28.

According to my figures the Patriots' 2008 cap figure is $108,134,346 with 55 signed or tendered players. The 2008 salary cap is $116,769,000. The Patriots' 2008 adjusted cap is $119,325,078. So I have the Pats under their adjusted cap by about $11.1 million. Please note that my numbers do not include the cap impacts of the Lewis Sanders signing, the Tank Williams signing or the Gaffney resigning.

Alright, real good news.

If room needs to be made for any players beyond those mentioned and expected, I'm sure it can be.

I know John Clayton might have us in the loser section of Free Agency :)rolleyes:) and Michael Felger might think we've sat and twiddled our thumbs to start free agency :)bricks:), we've re-signed all the important components we needed, too (MOSS, Wash, Gaff, Bruschi, Izzo, Paxton), addressed depth at DB (Williams, Webster, Sanders), with enough cap space to go after a couple more players and enough picks to add between 2-5 contributors via the draft.

Bottom line: I truly think the 2008 Patriots will be a stronger team than the 2007 team that just went 18-1. Bad news for the rest of the NFL.:rocker:

Great explanation. Thanks Bro.

Sorry for the misinformation about the quote, I just remembered the 22 mill. I also realized that since the statement was made, we seemingly didn't take a $13.2 million cap hit.

So, it would seem NE's looking at least $2.244M of their 2008 salary cap going to the player selected at 7th overall, if they use the pick. This total could be slightly higher for players at other positions, though...

FWIW - the max that the rookie pool can go up in a year is 5%. IIRC, it went up 2.5% last year.

2,040,000 * 1.05 = $2,142,000

Miguel -
The 2.675 I was referring to was the cap number that was on one of the links that you have on your site.

Implying that it is somehow my fault that you posted incorrect information. Well, the 2.04 is the cap number that is on the USAToday salary database which is a site that I also linked to.

I have said on this board that Peterson's 2007 cap hit was $2.04 million and I have previously linked to the Peterson's info on the USAToday database

If it was only 2.04 million, that's even better.

I will probably never figure out why people are so reluctant to keep the #7 overall pick just because of his cap number.
