Every corner in every team will get burned at sometime or another. No corner is totally unbeatable. Sure some are better than others but what qualities do you need before mediots and fans start referring to you as a "shutdown" corner. Was Ty Law one, how about Champ Bailey, Assante Samuel, Lito Shepherd ? Is the phrase "shutdown" corner too easily dished out or are there players out there who truly deserve the tag

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

It's pretty simple. Can you be put on an island and shut down half the field...Champ is one. Ty was more of a bump and run great, Asante nope. Could you get burned? Yup, but who can't. You can get burned in triple coverage.

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

A "shut down" corner is a corner whose play is so good that teams, generally, don't throw to that side of the field.

Champ Bailey is one. Ty Law WAS one.

Asante Samuel was NOT a shut-down corner, imho.

Lito Shephard and Sheldon Brown are damn near close to being ones.

There aren't many "shut down" corners in the league and its not a term that you hear a LOT, though the mediots are trying to.

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

Ty Law was in '98, and '03, Deion Sanders was most of his career and Champ Bailey rarely gets beat. To answer the question, there aren't too many "shutdown" corners. Sheppard and Samuel are not shut down corners. People thought that Sheppard did such a great job on Moss. That's because two other guys were spying him. Sheppard would have gotten schooled had he defended Moss on his own.

Somebody special. A corner that has the smarts to go with the athletic presence, hands, and he wouldn't even give you the steam off his p!ss. Is anybody that perfect? It's a term I've often read "experts" saying really doesn't exsist.

The current shut down corner is a cb that Qbs are afraid to throw at. The fear him because he creates turnovers and rarely gives up the big play. The only Cbs who meet that criteria are Cromartie and Samuel right now. Revis has potential. Bailey had a bad '07, but he was great the previous 2 seasons. When healthy Mathis, C. Woodson and McCalister are right below that level, because they tend to give up too many big plays. Most of the rest either get burned too frequently or don't make enough game changing plays to intimidate QBs.

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

The playoff game against Manning/Colts where Law was covering Harrison...Harrison was limited to 3 receptions for 19 yards, and Law got 3 picks...Thats shutdown

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

A term that no longer applies in the NFL. The new rules make the very idea of a shutdown corner a thing of the past. Even Champ Bailey gets thrown on these days. He doesn't get thrown on as much as others at the position but he still gets thrown on a lot compared to a guy like Deion Sanders did back in the day.

A shutdown corner is a cornerback who is really good at man-to-man coverage and plays for another team.

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

Dominique Rodgers Cromartie, he will be sitting there at no. 7. The guy is a sick athletic freak, he can be a shutdown corner. We all know who is cousin is by the way

If his name was simply Dominique Rodgers, he wouldn't have as much hype surrounding him...

That's a curious point you make. Before this season, I'd have said only Bailey really qualified. Perhaps a couple of others named would have stretches. But this year, had Bailey borrowed someone else's jersey, I never would've recognized him.

Was it simply an off-year, was it natural degradation of talent, the rule changes, some combo?

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

some one that's going to keep their top receiver quiet for 4 quarters in man coverage. no big plays.

there's no way we have a shutdown w/the soft zones we played last year.

asante is a ballhawk. goes for the big plays rather than the shutdown.

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

It is a corner who can impose his will on almost any reciever in man-to-man coverage. Ty Law on Harrison in '03 is a good example.

Currently, the way rules are enforced, there really isn't much a corner can do to become a "shutdown" force.

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

Shutdown Corner = Antonio Cromartie :D

Actually, he's not there yet, but I think he's got a bright future and probably one of the only players on our defense who I would feel comfortable with defending Moss.

Re: What is a "Shutdown" corner ?

shutdown corner - A mythical creature who has not been seen since the late 90's. Was reportedly trapped and killed by Bill Polian and Tony Dungy. There have been multimple sightings by various "experts" at ESPN but all have come back as bogus.

He's a bigtme playmaker at CB which is different from a shutdown corner. This is really what all top corners are these days. You can complete passes on them - with the rules emphasis you can throw at anoyne. The best guys are going to make a lot more plays and eventually get one going the other way if given too many opportuities.

Champ Bailey is one just because he was once a titan of the field. He really isn't anymore to the extent he once was. Asomugha is one, nobody throws to his side. The stats are suprising considering how good and underrated he is.
