If Bill took Otah after trading down in the first round would it make you angry? No question we need a CB and LB but just imagine what Otah would do for the line. He very well could be a pro-bowl caliber RT in this league for many years ... he's that good. He's not rated a great run blocker yet but Dante will take care of that.

There are a few big guys that will be available in later rounds ... but let's face it ... this is why we lost the super Bowl. While losing Asante will hurt in the short term a healthy O-Line with Otah at RT could help Moss break his own TD record this year ... Otah would make one of the greatest offenses ever become the absolute best offense ever ... is that important enough to go after Otah in round 1?

I'm not saying yes or no ... but who guessed we would pick Mankins 2 years ago?

With a high first round pick, I doubt BB takes a guy that is a project or is good at this but lacks skills or game knowledge in another department.
Now I don't know what the front office thinks, But I believe that especially with the ridiculous amount of money you spend on a top 20 pick.
You don't bring in a guy with the upside of a chris snee, but the bust rate of a Robert Gallery.
You don't bring in a guy who could be the next Adrian Peterson in Mcfadden but has a faliure rate to be more of a tim biabutuka.
You bring in a Big guy a Chris or Jake Long, who faced top competition, and excelled.
Or you bring in a difference maker on defense like a Vernon Gholston or my choice is turning more into quentin Groves.
Cause he is a physical freak speed wise.
But he seems to have a good knowledge of sheme and leverage which BB and co will expect this guy to have.
They won't bring in a DRC who didn't face any top 10 receivers but can run really really fast and be related to an all pro.
They won't draft a guy in Dorsey or Ellis who is really just a glorified Mike Wright in this scheme.
NO i'm telling you right now without a trade down the pick is gholston, Long's Groves.
If it's anything else and these guys are on the board I'll be shocked.

I wouldn't be angry if Belichick took anyone after trading down from no.7. Otah is not one of my favorite guys in the draft right now (I reserve the right to change my mind) and I would prefer someone capable of playing LT if drafting an OT in round 1.

I think you bring up a very realistic scenario though. Just because the Patriots need help at corner and linebacker, it doesn't mean that they will fill one of those needs in round 1. I think you take the best player available who fits in to your schemes, regardless of need in round 1. The Patriots very well could end up with an offensive lineman or even a defensive lineman in round 1. I don't think anyone should be disappointed if the Patriots don't fill an obvious need in round 1. Teams that pick for need in round 1 usually have terrible drafts.

If Otah's a good player, he would be ok with the second rounder. But you don't draft RT's with 1st round picks. I'd go with corner or pass rushing LB in the 1st.

i dont want to get into a "how we lost the s.b." discussion, but if your saying we need to draft a rt because of the s.b., then maybe you should go and watch some film of mankins in that game:rolleyes:
with that said, i wouldnt be mad over anyone b.b. picks. i do hope we trade down, but would prefer those picks go to an area that needs improvement, and our o-line played pretty good all year.

Can't see myself getting angry at any BB pick, he knows better than we do.

Like some here have observed, RT seems to be the weak link of the entire unit. But BB and Dante are the ones evaluating the Pats RT personnel. If they think the position needs an upgrade, then like all other positions -- they'll do so -- based on opportunity and value.

The Pats do like to have Dante work with developmental prospects, so there's certainly a possibility of addressing the OL later on.

My personal opinion is, we won't draft an OT in round one. I think there are other prospects ranked higher (on the Pats board), who will be available at #7 or in a trade down.

I'll avoid detouring this thread by not commenting on why we lost the SB. Only to say -- I seriously disagree.

I'd rather take Brandon Albert from Virginia. He has the versatility to fill in at G or RT, which is important given Neal's recent injury history.

Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with the offensive line aside from a little veteran depth. They were hands down the best line in the NFL, all year. They playe one bad game, then suddenly the line is an exposed weakness?

It's time to stop blaming the super bowl on one particular player or unit. The reason the Patriots stated 18-0 was because one one player or unit had a bad day, another stepped up. The entire team lost that game.

People have bad games. Tom Brady played one bad game in 2006 where he threw for under 100 yards and somethinglike 3 picks. Does that make him a bad QB.

I agree. I fully trust BB to make the correct decisions in the draft. I'm glad I don't have to make the decisions.:)

Otah is now picked in some mocks to be picked around 13-18. Dave Wannstadt called him the best blocker I have ever coached. I just don't see Belichick picking 7th so I'm not wasting time with who will be at #7.

Also ... I don't see Belichick picking a LB because he never does.

Also ... I don't see Belichick picking a CB that high because if he really valued the CB position then why didn't he just pay Asante. he didn't because he does not value that position that highly.

With all that said ... Belichick will not pick 7th and he will not dole out a big signing bonus for a CB or a LB.

In my mind Belichick sees these options:

1- Trade up for DE Chris Long if he lasts to #4 ... only 1% chance this happens but Bill can dream like all coaches do.

2 - Trade up for Jake Long if he lasts to #4 ... 20% chance this happens.
Belichick could gamble he drops to #5 but that's a huge gamble.

3 - Trade down and pick up a #2 and take Jeff Otah giving us the unquestioned best O-Line in the NFL for the next 3-5 years. That's something extremely valuable to Belichick ... 50% chance this happens.

4 - Trade down and pick OT Ryan Clady ... Ryan will be one of the better
LT's in the NFL for some time ... but picking him means moving Matt Light
to RT and Light is really not a RT type of mauler ... 30% chance this happens.

I don't like Otah as a prospect, so yes, and I'd get over it in about 2 seconds.

I'd never be angry at anybody BB picked...he knows way more than me about who fits his team. I'd be surprised at the pick, but not angry...Otah has alot of upside, but seems to be a little more risky than some other players.

that's a bit slow isn't it ... you're a veteran here I would think
your response time would be faster ... 1 second or your out .. your cap # is too high.

Personally I think Otah has all the potential for a Gallery-type bust. His athleticism is not where it should be, and NFL defensive lines are not the Big East.

Yeah I think Dryheat has a point. He is a mauler/Leaner but the feet are not as good as Kazcur's, and I am not sure he can drive block well enough to move inside to ROG.

Besides BB shies away from the flabby ones.

Unless there is an injury, next year I fully expect to be singing the praises of another OT, Oher of Ole Miss. who I think would have been the second best OT in this draft had he come out. Let's hope he spends his final season at Ole Miss getting much strongeer and learning to road grade much better. More flat back and less leaning on the opponent.

I agree with every bit of that...and I would add "stay out of trouble" to the list.

There were plenty of people who thought the Pats would take Mankins. Just they didn't have him pegged for LG. They had him at RT.

Really? I was super high on Mankins (in the 2nd! :p) and most pre-draft analyses I read projected him at guard. For the Pats in particular it was very clear, since LG was the one and only open position in their lineup.

Who the hell is going to trade up to Number 7 in this draft?

If all the good players are gone and no one for BB to draft, why would another team trade up?

Unless Ryan, McFadden, Jake Long or Chris Long are on the board at #7, there is no one any team would trade up to #7 for?

There is always a stupid team or 2 every draft. Really the best trading spot appears to be #6 but I doubt the Jets will do it ... I will not rule out a team trading a bit high to take Brohm. The Ravens may want him at #8 and the Panthers might spend 450 points to move up and take him ... why not?

Otah is overrated and Belichick does not draft overrated players in the first round.
