Jets offered Asante huge money

So I guess Asante isn't a total money-grabber after all.

I give him credit for not going solely for the money.

Can't blame him for not wanting to play the Pats twice per year

Exactly ... Brady to Moss 10000 times while he tried to cover ....:eek::eek:

I wish the Jets had signed him to that contract. Boy howdy do I wish they had signed him.

Well he will have to play the Cowboys and Giants twice a year which won't exactly be a field day for him.

I can't really blame Asante for choosing Philly, even though they haven't won crap since the merger their fans are still rabid and Philly is still seen as a great franchise, unlike the Jets.

Plus, and this is probably not true, maybe Asante knew his fans in NE would hate it if he went to NYJ? I'd like to think players to that into consideration on occasion.

That was probably the primary reason, and then the fact the Jets D will be even more horrible to play for next year.

He realized that Brady to Moss would have exposed him as a fraud of CB.

I think it's more likely Asante figured Eric wouldn't be there long enough to defend his boy when the finger pointing started because the JETS still suck. That's kind of what happened to CuMar - he followed Tuna to the Meadowlands, and then Tuna bailed on a cap and contracts mess he created in his desire to turn a floundering franchise around. Tangini are in the midst of creating another mess in an effort to save their own jobs that someone else will be left to clean up in a year or two. Most of the FA signings of this week will constitute the bulk of that cleanup, because none of them, or Asante, are as talented as Martin was. And what a career long waste of talent that decision was.

I don't. Even if it's an insane amount of money, Asante is a very good football player who's familiar with our team, so just about 0% of me wanted him going to a division rival.

Maybe Bruschi or Troy Brown might but after Adam V's move to the Colts (and Johnny Damon to the Yankees), I got rid of the delusion that players might take fans' thoughts into consideration.

Why do some fans have to be an ******* to players once they leave? I'll never understand it since he played his ass off here the whole time. Its extremely ungrateful for how much players do for the team.

While I certainly think Brady and Moss could make Asante look like burnt toast, I wouldn't call Samuel a "fraud CB." On the other hand, if you think Asante played his ass off for the fans you are sorely mistaken. Players don't work hard to please the fans, they do it for their own livelihood. I enjoy that while they're here, but once they've gone the only thing I'll say is "don't get hurt."

You mean Asante really did want to go to a decent team?

You mean all the mind readers who were sure he was lying look...kind of...foolish?

It kinda depends on your definition of decent... I think someone else hit it on the head in assessing his selections. He didn't want to be the highest paid defensive player in the league on a team like the JETS. Too much potential acrimony. And a really tenuous management situation. Things aren't all that stable in Philly, but if things go wrong Donovan is always first in line for the acrimony servings. And the ownership and FO are safe, as is the HC unless his sons keep screwing up. And he'll be playing on a better defense overall and for him. Plus it's the NFC where miracles happen.

Mee too. I want to be rivals with the Jets again. The 80's followed by Parcells saga, etc really boosted the rivalry because the teams were often even in strength. It is too one-sided now. I would have loved to have a bunch of ex-Patriots get overpaid by Mangenius and then get obliterated by us.

Yeah exactly what I thought when I saw this. Puts a whole new spin on that quote, don't it now?
