WOODY GETS WOODY
Posted by Mike Florio on March 3, 2008, 3:53 p.m.

And so it continues for the New York Jets.

The team owned by Woody Johnson has signed Lions free-agent tackle Damien Woody to a five-year, $25.5 million contract, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

Per Schefter, Woody will receive $11 million in guaranteed money.

One league source expressed to us in the wake of the signings of Woody, Calvin Pace, and Alan Faneca and the trade and new contract for defensive tackle Kris Jenkins that these moves smack of desperation by a coaching staff and a front office that fear a rash of pink slips if the green and white don’t win a lot of games in 2008.

Good Lord. Woody was a massive (literally, he was overweight) disappointment in Detroit.

Re: Jets sign Woody to 5-year, $25M deal

I think this signing actually helps us, instead of the Jets. $25.5M for Woody? Sheesh.

Are the Jets printing money over there? Good grief, they're spending money like it grows on trees. And not necessarily so wisely, I might add.

Jets sign former Patriot Damien Woody to add more beef to Offensive Line

Just reported on Sirius,Not sure of what the contract contains but I would assume it was for a year.

I liked Woody when he was here as a solid OL man but was injury prone in Detroit

The Jets have really bolstered thier offensive line which may be one of the better ones if the new guys pan out.

Clemens or Pennington should have time to throw this year with Faneca and Woody and Mangold and Co.

Yeh I thought Woody only had one good season with the Lions, and his conditioning was an issue. That's also WAY too much money for Pace.

Re: Jets sign Woody to 5-year, $25M deal

Woody is over 340# ... that's huge for him.
He hasn't even started much last few years.
Is Mangini living in the past? This is the year
it all comes down on him.
Jenkins? a shadow of what he was in SB38 and
he wasn't so bad then
Mangini is desperate.

Man, the spree continues. This reminds me of how another team from New York (one which had a history of championship success) started throwing around money on overpriced veterans, and hasn't won a title since. And these guys aren't nearly as good on paper as the ones that other team signed. Color me intrigued to watch this train wreck.

The Jets are down for the count.

The Bills and Dolphins should be improved. With the Phins, how could they not be?

Re: Jets sign former Patriot Damien Woody to add more beef to Offensive Line

I haven't see his play after he joined the Lions but always thought he was a solid contributor. Was he cut or did his contract with the Lions run out?

I am not sure but I am assuming he was cut

Absolutely hilarious...Detroit dumps him and the Jets pay him $25 million? Mangini on the bottle over there??

Re: Jets sign Woody to 5-year, $25.5M ($11M guaranteed) deal

Tanenbaum must be getting desperate and I'm glad he's the Jets GM and not ours. They could have drafted a kid as low as the 4th round who would have helped them better then Woody ... but it's 5 million less than they had before to catch us.

Re: Jets sign former Patriot Damien Woody to add more beef to Offensive Line

Thanks. If he was indeed cut, wondering whether our FO made any contact...

Re: Jets sign former Patriot Damien Woody to add more beef to Offensive Line

He was a free agent because his contract expired.

He was a free agent because his contract expired.

Technically he had a voidable final year that he exercised.

Did Woody's play drop that significantly with the Lions?

I always thought he was a solid guy in on the OL (and a nice guy off the field) when he was with us. Remember that he was one of the rare sports guy who frankly said that he was leaving because he got more $.

Source: Jets closing in on a five year, $58 million deal.

The New York Jets and a random Poland Springs water cooler are finalizing terms on a five year, $58 million deal, a source told ESPN's John Clayton.

Good Lord. Woody was a massive (literally, he was overweight) disappointment in Detroit.

Mangini lost weight after he landed in the Meadowlands. Maybe he figures he can get Damien to stick to his diet.

I think this is pretty telling:

"One league source expressed to us in the wake of the signings of Woody, Calvin Pace, and Alan Faneca and the trade and new contract for defensive tackle Kris Jenkins that these moves smack of desperation by a coaching staff and a front office that fear a rash of pink slips if the green and white don’t win a lot of games in 2008."

I think that after the ****storm they unleased on the league in week 1, these two know that if they don't at least put up double digit wins this season there will be yet another housecleaning changing of the guard for Gangreen come 2009. The road to cap hell, and the JETS have traveled enough that they should grasp this, is overpaying for less than elite talent. When you have to cut your losses a year or two later it's a biatch. But GM's stressed over job security will do it every time, 'cause either it works short term and saves your job or your gone and it's someone elses problem to clean up your mess. On the way out the door you just blame the players.

He lost his starting job as a center, and this year he was a fill in guard.
