Parcells insists Dolphins aren't shopping Taylor

Bill Parcells says Jason Taylor isn't going anywhere. An Internet report that the Miami Dolphins want to trade Taylor before April's NFL Draft is "totally untrue," Parcells told The Palm Beach Post on Sunday.

"He's going to play for us, unless he decides to retire," Parcells said by cellphone during the sixth inning of an exhibition game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Florida Marlins in Jupiter. "It's just irresponsible journalism."

No one was more surprised than Taylor by the report Saturday night by Yahoo Sports that he had become trade bait.

"That's not what the team told him," said a source close to Taylor.
Parcells, the head of football operations, said the Dolphins have never told another team that Taylor, a six-time Pro Bowl selection, is on the trading block.

"How would I know how it started? I didn't make this stuff up," Parcells said

"All I'm telling you is I know the facts - and it's totally untrue."

Have to admit, I did have my hopes up. But it's now time to move away from rumors and focus more on speculation. Tis the season...

I have a feeling that if they were going to trade him to the Pats, NE would have to give up a whole heck of a lot to get him. At least a first, if not a first and another pick. Trading within the division does not happen very often.

I still think Parcells probably will trade Taylor, but I think there is next to no chance he will be a Patriot. No matter how much people want to argue that Parcells doesn't care about trading him in the division because the Dolphins are a long way away from being competitive, I don't buy it. This is a league where you can go from one of the worst teams in the league to a play off contender overnight. In 2007, the Browns won 10 games after winning only 4 in 2006. In 2006, the Saints went to the NFC Championships after winning only 3 games in 2005.

I don't think the Dolphins will be a playoff contender this year, but it wouldn't surprise me. I do think if Parcells' plan does work, the Dolphins could be a serious playoff contender in 2009 though. Remember Belichick and Pioli totally revamped the Patriots and brought a Super Bowl in two years. And they didn't have the cap flexibility that the Dolphins do.

For that reason alone, I don't see Parcells helping a division rival especially the strongest team in the division. Whether Parcells trades Taylor or not, he is unlikely to be a Patriot in 2008.

WE had something Tuna doesn't have though... Maybe he rectifies that this year, and maybe he tries and fails or maybe he just rebuilds and hopes to recify that with a top 5 pick next year... Remember, even in Dallas until he was forced (by Drewpie) into inserting Romo in to the mix, a kid Jerry was more enamored with than Tuna, he was flumoxed at turning that franchise around.

If Taylor doesn't want to play through a rebuild, they will move him around draft time either for something this year or something next year, maybe something conditional. He will go to the highest bidder, but only if that bidder is where Taylor wants to play. Neither hand holds all the cards in this little melodrama. Taylor can retire and Tuna gets nothing, but that only works if he really doesn't want to play since they would retain his rights in perpetuity. In a full blown rebuild you may want the cash and cap space more than want to waste another season paying a pro bowler who will age out before you get it turned around. Tuna has lots of needs and youth and picks and cap and cash are what it will take to fill those.

The ball is really in Taylor's court. I think he wants to come here, and has articulated that to lots of folks off the record. But what we dont know is if he has the resolve to make it happen. He would likely have to go through Wayne to make that happen. Wayne has said Bill is in charge. Bill has said he's not really...after all he got to hire Ireland away from Dallas by claiming he would be. Of course Wayne also promised Bill he would remain majority owner through his tenure, and he's already sold a half interest in the team to it's new eventual owner. Lyin' is as much a part of the fabric of this game as say video tape.
