GAY GOES SOUTH
Posted by Mike Florio on March 2, 2008, 1:44 p.m.

After two frenetic days of free agency, Sunday was shaping up to be a lot slower.
So much for that.

The Patriots have lost cornerback Randall Gay to New Orleans, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

Gay has agreed to terms on a four-year, $17.8 million deal, which includes a $3.75 million signing bonus and $6.9 million in guaranteed money.

It’s not a jaw-dropping deal, but it further damages the defending AFC champions. And Gay figures to be an improvement over Jason David, who performed like a piece of French (Quarter) Toast for the Saints in 2007.

Re: Gay is gone!

Not a surprise, but just another hole to fill.

Re: Gay is gone!

Not surprising, althought THAT contract is a little too much imo. He hasn't shown much beyond being a nickelback from what I've seen.

Re: Gay is gone!

$4.5M a year for Randall Gay ???

Re: Gay is gone!

good riddens.

hey don't say that. you have nothing to complain about.

Gay played his butt off here and got paid crap every year.

You should remember what he did in the superbowl as a free agent rookie corner.

Re: Gay is gone!

The Pats continue to "lose" players that they have made no serious indication that they wanted.
Is a player lost when you chose to no longer want/require his services?

Re: Gay is gone!

Starting CBs...

CB: Antwain Spann
CB: Ellis Hobbs

SS: Rodney Harrison
FS: James Sanders

Trust me folks, this will be worked on...

Re: Gay is gone!

Ridiculous $ for a very average corner..

Re: Gay is gone!

All I can say is we will have a lot of new players on the team next year.
Maybe 4/5 rookies on the team.

Yup, some of these NFL GM's are acting like a kid with money burning holes in his pockets...

Really, since when is NE's 3rd CB, who's been on the injured reserve multiple times, and got burned a few different times by 3rd/4th WR's in 2007 worth $4.45M per year?

If that is that market, then I'd gladly hang on to the money and draft some of the top level CB's out of this years draft class. Chevis Jackson should go in the third round, and he'll be a better pro CB than Randall Gay.

Re: Gay is gone!

This signing has the same feel as the David Givens signing by Tennessee a few years ago. A real nice pay day for a JagPlus type player

Re: Gay is gone!

A hearty congratulations to Mr. Gay, who got overpaid AND got to go home. Best of luck to him in any game not being played against the Patriots.

Re: Gay is gone!

I for the most part enjoyed his time as a Patriot, good luck in the future.

Didn't want him back on the team though, upgrade needed.

Why is James Sanders bolded?

Re: Gay is gone!

$4.5 million? Wow, holy crap. Good for him that he was able to get that kind of money from anyone. Simply wow...

I am sure he also wanted to go home as he played college ball at LSU. I thought he was horrible, but apparently some organization (Saints) felt differently.

Re: Gay is gone!

Good for him. The kid worked hard and was an UDFA and now he gets a big payday. I'm glad for him.
