Look. If we sign Moss to a reasonable contract, great. If we give him $9+ million a year, that would be stupid. Really. It is agonizing waiting for news on him but let's look at the situation without our homer glasses on. I hope he comes back, but if he doesn't the New England Patriots will move forward.

Randy Moss is at this point in his career (in my opinion) where he should not get $9 million a year. Let's reflect back to the playoffs and the games where the opposing team did all they could to eliminate him. How did he do? Not well. In the playoffs, by design or not he was missing. The team did not steamroll through the playoffs and in fact struggled. How is that? Offensively the line broke down but Randy Moss was invisible. Nowhere to be seen.

He had a tremendous year. But, the teams that certainly focused on taking him out of the game, did. What makes any of you think they will not do that again? I am sure the front office does not want to pay for a $9 million decoy. At this point, I tell him to pound sand, thanks for your service. Move on. Trade for a receiver, draft another one and use the money elsewhere.

Who is this Moss you speak of? First I've heard about him..

Excellent post. DEFENSE is what we need to get back to.

Yeah! And with all the money we can save by not giving Moss what he wants we can sign....

Oh, wait.

Ha Players of lesser talent are cleaning up but he isn't worth it? Really?

How many teams accomplished that? Where did the 18 wins come from?

Because only one team managed to do that *AND* beat the Patriots!!!

You are obviously very young, do not know much about Pro Football, and are probably a lost cause.

He wasn't worth the money either.
Perhaps the Redskins might be a team many people here should consider following.

Maybe the NFL secretly banned them from free agency too.

Alright I understand some people don't think he's worth the money, I get that.

But people who say "Let's save the money - and spend on defense" can never provide who exactly they'd spend that money on.

Wow. You are one intelligent person. You formed a strong argument. Must be a member of the debate team at your middle school, Einstein.

Typical. Nothing to say but criticize someone's opinion by calling them stupid, not a true fan, young and the best one of all...knowing nothing about football. Great. You are a true boob.

Apparently, you were typing this as I was correcting that...

You move up in the draft if you have $$$ and you move down when you don't.

To add...in my OPINION I think Moss is gone. Think back to how this front office has handled free agents and/or malcontents (unhappy with their contracts):

Branch
Vinatieri
Samuel
Givens

To name a few. Most of the time, if they do not wish to pay the going rate as they do not think they are worth it, they lowball them. Then, the player signs elsewhere or demands a trade, etc. Not saying this is a bad policy, but it happens quite a bit.

I truly believe there is something more to the Moss story. Or, the team would have paid him or franchised him and traded him. But, since I know nothing about football and am very, very young I may just be reaching.

Well the NFL isn't a one-season deal. There's no point overspending on a deal this year just for the sake of it, if it is going to handicap you for the next 2 or 3 years. If we overspend on Moss this year and end up losing Wilfork because of it, then that's pretty poor business, imo.

Well said. I wholeheartedly agree. I love Moss and what he did this year for the team. But, when we needed him the most, he vanished. Giving him oodles of money in a long term deal may handicap the team in the future. Moss ain't no spring chicken anymore and has legal troubles again.

I for one do not want to lose Vince because we gave Moss all the money.

Again though - that's a different argument.

I'm referring to people who keep saying by letting go of Moss it will help our defense this year.

Randy Moss is a gamechanger.

The Patriots, historically, will pay for a gamechanger. You can't buy them all, but the brass recognizes Moss' worth. Nuff said.

Moss wants to retire a Patriot, at least he says.

I think he gets an idea of the offers available, then signs here for somewhat less.

I also think you're nuts to write off the idea of 9m APY for Moss. You can go ahead and pay him as the best receiver in the league. That's what he is. What you can't do is pay him as a sui generis, a receiver in his own category -- which I also believe he is.

You sound like you're whistling past the graveyard. You totally underestimate the value of Moss to this team, to Brady, to the rest of the offense.
