With cornerback Asante Samuel in the fold, the Eagles are now going to attempt to trade cornerback Lito Sheppard, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

Calls are already coming in for Sheppard, a first-round draft pick in 2002 who is still only 26 years old.

In recent weeks, there were rumors that that Sheppard was on he block, and the team strongly denied it. In hindsight, it's likely that the Eagles didn't want to tip their hand regarding their plans to pursue Samuel.

Sheppard is under contract for four more seasons, with base salaries of $2 million in 2008, $3 million in 2009, $3.7 million in 2010, and $4.25 million in 2011.

I don't know what they're looking to get in return, but those #'s don't look all that bad considering what Samuel got.
Not saying he's as good as Samuel, just comparing the $$$ it would take to get him.

I am not 100% sure on Lito....need to look more into what he did last year.....I am sure BB has all the info....time will tell on this one...but most likely we will be underbid anyways.....don't get your hopes up on ANYONE!

What do you mean don't get your hopes up on anyone?


Belichick has been the opposite of what you are portraying. He traded for D.Starks didn't work out. He traded for C.Dillon won Super Bowl. He traded for W.Walker. One of best trades in recent history. He traded for R.Moss. Tell me another team good or bad that has made that many big trades in recent years. Not free-agent signings trades.


I think Lito is almost as good as Asante when he's healthy. He's missed 14 games the last 3 years though. If we think he's healthy. He's worth the gamble. He did shut R.Moss down in our game against the Eagles this year. That shows what type of ability he has. Also, had a great game in Dallas against TO. Had a pick and Eagles shut them down 10-6.

I'm not worried about the draft choice. Lito can play now. The question is what he requires for a new contract. A $10M signing bonus plus his existing salaries seems about right ($4.5M 2008 cap).

The point of draft choices is get players who can contribute. Here we have an opportunity to get a player who will contribute in the FIRST year of a 4-year contract. The question is the competing offers. Shepherd is easily worth a 2nd to the patriots, although the Oakland 3rd seems more likely. Somehow it seems more reasonable to trade "extra" picks.

The backup corners need to be top Sters.

That would be a pretty good secondary if our draft choices work out. No pressure on the rookies to start immediately. A couple of vets who can help them along. I can see the draft going two ways. If Gholston is availabe we take him. Too good of a pass-rusher to pass on. We could move up 12-15 spots in Round 2 to get a cb we really like. There are a bunch of pretty good prospects who should be available around 50. Trade our 2 and 3. We can still get a pretty good ilb prospect with Oaklands pick. Not sure we need two rookies if we get Lito and a good prospect in Round 2. Might depend on what staff thinks of M.Richardson. Maybe a S with our 4th rounder.

I don't know how much it would cost to acquire Lito's rights from the Eagles, but I wouldn't think they could get much more than a second rounder. They've given up, and received less for better players. He's also had some injury problems of late (missed 6 games in '05, 3 games in '06, and 5 games in '07), and he's not expected to be a starting CB for them, if he stays.

I'm wondering if sending a 3rd round pick over to Denver for Domonique Foxworth would be a good use of that pick? They only tendered him at that level (3rd round), so we know that would be the compensation Denver would receive, if another team were to sign him away. Is he worth a third rounder?

He's only 24, and he's played 46 out of a possible 48 games so far. His production went down in 2007, but that's because the Broncos traded for Dre' Bly.

Here are his three year stats:
2005: 16 games, 71 total tackles (65 solo), 16 PD's, 1 FF, 9 Rec (correct?), 2 INT's.
2006: 16 games, 61 total tackles (49 solo), 6 PD, 1 FF, 1 INT,
2007: 14 games, 42 tackles (31 solo), 4 PD's, 1 FF

Not every player is worth the same amount. Maybe Gay was only worth $1M a year to them. Maybe they'll offer Sheppard an amount he can live with.

I kind of agree here. I mean, he's not a jag, but he's nothing more than a 3rd CB, and seems to think a little highly of himself, for what he's actually accomplished. I think he hung out with Samuel a little to much, or something.

Really, what happened to that humble kid who was just happy that the team was keeping him around, and giving him a shot to prove himself, after having gone on the IR twice...?

If they can land Lito for the second, why the hell not? The eagles can't afford two big CB contracts. I think it's a definite possibility. Also, the Eagles would lvoe for him to come to us. I know no one wants to make the Pats any better, but the Pats wont be in Philly's way anytime soon. It would give them Samuel then toss a disgruntled player far and away from their division. It's a win-win for both teams if they swapped Samuel for Sheppard

Think this through.... Lito has been an All Pro twice in his young career. He's making about half what Samuel will now be making. Why does a team go out and double the money being paid to the CB in a situation like that?
